Hehe you never know! I have a friend who contracted Dengue Fever when she was in Central America ten or fifteen years ago. They put her in a hospital and fed her burritos and enchaladas! Can you imagine wanting to die and that being what you have to eat? Note to self: Travel with chicken soup! lol I have a friend going to PR to celebrate her 40th b'day in November. I'll have to forward this info to her! Yikes! |

Wow! That is really scary. My sil's knee got really swollen and he couldn't walk on it. When they got through the congo into S. African he finally saw an orthopedic doc. The orthopedic doc did an MRI and found nothing that needed repairing. He then sent him to a rheumy. The rheumy said it was the African Virus. He first had it, I believe, as a bladder infection and it moved to his knee. The explanation was that if you had a gene for arthritis this can happen. Anyway, he's fine now. However, as I understand it, it could come back. Really weird. Shirley--glad that SonIL is doing okay--I check their website every now and then--glad they made it to Johannesburg. What an incredible time of their lives and a journey that defies rational belief! Hats off to them!!!!! We had too brief a vist with son and fiancee this summer--both are back in Algeria to their teaching posts at the Univ of Oran--I am dumbfounded by these kids (yours and ours) and sat for 3 days enthralled by their stories--and, I'm sure we got the glossed over mom and dad version of everything! They are storing up memories that will keep them going forever--I applaud their courage!!! junie |

One of my favorite pictures from Brazil was one that I took that was a hand-painted sign saying "Dengue is a bitch" (in Portuguese...) that was one a wall behind a large tub of standing water. |

Jorf, was it a mosquito farm? I wasnt really talking about Dengue fever, about which I know nothing.(I thought West Nile Virus comes from mosquitoes..) I was just amused (in a sick way) to read Dengue gives the sufferers agonizing joint pain. When here..we PAY LOTS OF MONEY for tiny pills that give us agonizing joint pain! As Roseanne Rosannadana used to say.."never mind....' Still, I continue to continue to pretend, my life will never end, and flowers never bend with the rainfall . Paul Simon

Well, junie, they're in Tanzania now. You are so right. The memories these kids will have will last a lifetime. I NEVER, NEVER dreamed my daughter would have done something so daring, no, DANGEROUS! Good luck to your kids also. I miss'em, but am glad they can do this.
