I just bought some new calcium tablets that were on sale at Longs- thought I'd try them because they had magnesium, D3 and phosphorus as well as 600 mgs of calcium. That would mean I could get away with only 2 a day to get my quota.
I get home and look at the ingredients again and see that they contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate!
wth?? Why would they put a known carcinogen in something we need to take a couple times day? I called the company and told the rep how shocked I was that they would put something that causes cancer in a nutritional supplement.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Yes, I see it here. It's a lubricant in very minute amounts. Can we give you a refund?"
Yes, they can, but more importantly I wanted her to let the company know that this is crazy. Women take extra calcium to protect their health, not expecting to ingest carcinogenic substances that could harm them when taking it for years. Unbelievable.
And I was worried about a little soybean oil!
This is the manufacturer's website. It looks so responsible.

Thanks for the suggestions, both of you. Because I'm taking Femara, my onc wants me to take 1200mgs of calcium and 800IUS of D3 a day. I'm happy to double up and take two a day to get 1200, which makes sense anyway because the body can only process so much at a time, but I'd rather not have to take more than two pills to get the amount. I may have to, though- my problem is that I either forget, or I'm not home to take that middle of the day pill. The Daily Advantage comes pretty close, though. I may think about that and I could just add an extra calcium. Looking at them closely, they do look great. I wonder what the "non-active" ingredients are. I didn't see any listed- Do you know, ERic, if there is anything else in them besides what I see on the website? Dx IDC, 1cm, Stage I, Grade 3, 0/6 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

Sandilee, Yes, gotta read those labels!!! Many vitamins also contain "glycol" which is antifreeze . To my knowledge, Andrew Lessman has the purest vitamins on the market. Check out his site and read the ingredients. You'll pay more but it's worth it. http://www.procapslabs.com/PCL/Content/PCLHome.aspx Six Years.

As far as I can tell, what you see on the web site is what you get. I looked at our box, and the list from his website, and the list pretty well matched. I take em once a day, the wife takes them several times a day, based on Bill's reccomendation. Dx None |

I recently read similar things about flu shots, that one of many undesirable ingredients is the same material used to make antifreeze. And I've also read that calcium supplements derived from oyster shells may indeed contain calcium, but for the most part humans cannot absorb it, no matter how finely it gets ground up. In my own personal experience, I had been taking some b vitamins capsules and a one a day multivitamin which was a red tablet in '06. I learned later that the red tablets in particular have something indigestable to hold the tablet together. I was complaining to my primary doctor of having upset stomachs, which started with chemo and never really went away, which at that time was one year later. He told me to stop taking the vitamins, and I did feel better. He also told me to stop 'self diagnosing' and 'self medicating' with the green tea I was drinking and the cardamom I was putting in my coffee. As he raised his voice and was lecturing me on the evils of supplements, I decided this dude is not the doctor for me and I never went back. :) There's some real gems here in south Texas. I bought ONE A DAY for women (breast health). Well that's a joke. It has soy in it, which I'm trying to avoid because of my ER positive tumor...so not MY breast health people. I have since found brands that don't have soy or soy lecithin, but didn't know about these other ingredients. Thanks for keeping me informed. Lori
