This is my first post on this board but I have been reading this site for months.I am very encouraged by all of you. It is actually my daughter that has the breast cancer. She was diagnosed the first time in 2005 , she was 31.She had a lumpectomy. The tumor was 1.5cm,grade2 I believe. It was er+andpr+ her2-.She is BRAC1&2 - She had two sentinel nodes involved. They told us she was stage 2a and the prognosis was good. She was in a trail where she recieved 4 rounds of adreymicn and cytoxin. She was to recieve 4 rounds of taxol. The first round was good but she had an allergic reaction to Taxol on the second round. They stopped and said they didn't want to give her anymore. She then had 33 days with radiation. This was all done at a very well know hospital in So. Cal.She was put on Tomoxifin.I will say she wasn't super diligent about taking it.Then three years almost to the day she noticed a red area right on her scar. She now had new insurance and new docs. They were right on it and determined her cancer was back. Her CT scan was clear and her blood work including tumor markers were all good. She had a masectomy and chemo. The Docs have been very encouraging. They said it was local recurrance and that she was still stage 2a and nothing has changed.Well it has changed for us. Anyway she has had three rounds of taxetare(which was difficult to get her to tolerate )and Carboplatin. Tomorrow is her fourth and final round. We are so scared .It somehow felt more reassurring when she was getting the chemo.I guess what I want to know is if anyone ever has recurrance and that is it?Does it always metastize? I feel like we are waiting for the other shoe to fall.Any feed back would be wonderful. Thank you all again for the support.

Hi preschool - I think reccurences happen, and it sucks! But it doesn't have to mean it's the end of the road, so please don't lose hope. There are treatments out there, and they do work.

You and your daughter are in my prayers.

A local reoccurance may never metastize. The clean scan is good news. So sorry that your daughter was put through this again. Never give up hope! Lets hope this is her last time.

Janis

I used to care but I take a pill for that now.

A local recurrence does not mean metastasis!  They will treat it as a new cancer, and as I understand it, having a local recurrence does not make a poorer long term prognosis.  It really has to suck going through the emotional ups and downs of any kind of recurrence, but local is so, so much better than a distant metastatic site.

Was she hormone positive in her recurrence?  It's more usual for BRCA positive to be hormone negative.

dx triple neg in 2005, mets to mediastinal nodes 12/07 , chemo Jan - April 08, remission 2/08; CT scan 4/08 showed one healing spine lesion, currently on chemo break, followup scans scheduled for late July; fingers crossed for no progression!
