I have been on Herceptin now for 8 months and done with A/C and taxol for 5 months. I now have split thumbs and index fingers and nails that get nasty splits.
Do any of you folks who have been on Herceptin have the same complaint? What to do?

And I had a clean PET scan today 1 year after my initial diagnosis. Hooray!

Thank you all for being out there

Hi Henny and congratulations on your clean scan, great news! About the nails, I've always had very strong nails, I used to have to have my dh clip the ones on my right hand because they were just to tough for me to do. I had the a\c, taxotere, rads and finished my year of herceptin this past December. My nails are a mess. Some will grow a little, but will break and split quite easily. I've even had some split in half so it's like I have two layers of nails, yuck! I've recently tried coating them with something called "hard as nails", to soon yet to see if it will make a difference. I'll let you know if it works for me. Again, congrats on the clean scan, that's the most important thing!

I finished Herceptin a year ago (preceded by AC/T), and although my fingernails have recovered, my toenails are a disaster. One toe has only half a nail, and many of the other toenails have the consistency of croissants, as my teenage daughter put it. Very embarrassing as it looks as if I have some dread fungal infection, and I'm sure people worry about contagion. I don't blame them!

I have the same problems with my fingers (and toes).

I had my last herceptin infusion on February 13 so I am hoping that the nails will eventually grow out and the skin peeling and cracking will stop.

The best thing I found for the splitting skin was a handcream that contains paraffin from Bath and Body Works.  It is from the True Blue Spa line and is called "Look, Ma, New hands."

I also would put Bag Balm on my feet and wear a pair of socks while it absorbed.

Thank you all for the good ideas.
I'm going to try the "hard as nails' and take a trip to the mall (a welcome diversion) to check out the lotion at Bath and Body works. A coworker also recommended Aquaphor and I'll give that a try too.

I know that this hand pain is a small price to pay and not much compared to chemo and surgeries but still look forward to getting closer to the way I used to feel before cancer made its surprise appearance

SO it's the herceptin that causes the splitting.  My nails are strong but each treatment makes 2 or so fingers have splits on the end.  Painful and annoying and interferes with my typing LOL

I too have the "split finger syndrome" (ha).... and like you (kimbly) didn't know till just now that it is the Herceptin.... WOW!   I just thought it was a combination of everything!  It is usually my thumb and index finger (right hand only) that split... and boy, does it hurt.... and just when one of them start to heal, I go and pull or clip the skin around my nail and there it goes again...and it takes forever to heal... and then round 2 with the other finger......YUK!!

I haven't had any problems with any of the other fingers or my nails and toes... just the 2 fingers...Weird?!?  but then again, since treatment began, everything is weird... and I mean, Everything!

I finished my year of Herceptin back in December 2007 and my nails are STILL weak.  They split and peel very easily.  Before treatment, I had very strong nails.  My fingers seemed to have quit splitting though, so that's a good thing.  Crazy the stuff this treatment does to one's body...

Well, of course, I can't be sure Herceptin had anything to do with my nail troubles. I took AC/T also, which turned my nails brown and made them fall out.

I also did AC/T and my nails were terrible after the taxotere! But I finished my second round of herceptin in August of last year and my nails are very thin with lots of ridges (run from base of nail up to tips) . The nails on my hands tear easily as soon as they reach the end of the nail bed but don't split along the ridges. I asked my Onc when this might correct itself and she did'nt have any idea.

I finished Taxol in 11/2004 and Herceptin in 11/2005 and my thumb nails still pull away from the nailbed 1/2 and 3/4 of the way down.  All the fingernails have ridges and I will not even get started on the toenails.  I am really beginning to wonder if this is permanent!?!?!

My fingers stopped cracking (almost).

I wear gloves when doing dishes and cleaning with water or any type of chemical.

I also wear gloves outside and coat my hands with Vaseline at night...

Also, keep cracks covered with bandaids (I have developed new and bizzare ways of wrapping my finger tips) and some antibiotic cream so they don't get infected.

Good Luck,

I finished my herceptin treatment on 2/19/08.  I noticed today that the skin on my finger tips and toes is no longer cracking and peeling.

I hope my nails recover sometime in the next year.

Hi All:  Liquid bandaid works for me.  You brush it on the skin around the cracks (mine are all split at the end corners of my nails)..... I finish Herceptin Jan 31st and my nails are still not right...

I finished Herceptin 11/2006 and my fingers still split and my toes still look like I have a fungus. My dematologist told me to fill the split fingers with super glue, that it wouldnt hurt me and its cheaper than liquid bandaid. I give up on my feet.

wow,i feel so much better knowing i am not alone with these cracks around my thumb and index finger,my fingernails refuse to grow and my toenails are just brown and disgusting. i have placed the blame on the taxol, the numbness for sure, but i guess the herceptin has to take some of the blame too.

do you ever feel like your just falling apart?

Hi all

I always heard of the problem with nails and taxol.  My nails were a little thinner on the taxol but I didn't have the nail splitting problem I have now with the herceptin (I like the croissant analogy!).  It was during the summer, though, so my hands and nails always fare better in the warmer weather.   I had skin splitting until vacation a few weeks ago in the sunny carribeanCool.  So the cure from finger pad splitting is a vacation!

As a nurse practitioner I'm washing my hands constantly and figured it was a combination of the meds, cold winter and handwashing.  Now, however, my finger nails split into layers as soon as they get to the end of the finger.  It's very annoying.  Fortunately, my toes are fine.  I do get a pedicure once a month (I never get manicures) so I wonder if the nail polish is somewhat protective.

I use super glue for cracks and Nail Envy as a protector on nails. It is expensive and i get it from beauty supply house, but if I follow directions I can have nice nails again.

It gets better. I had the cracked nails, skin, fungus on toenails, everything imaginable. I finished my year of Herceptin in early 2007 and my nails are back to normal and the skin is only as dry as it was before treatment. I used Tea Tree oil, Aquaphor, Bag Balm, you name it. Get something that smells good (sure ain't Tea Tree oil) and just know you're kicking cancer butt and will soon be back to that new normal. Really.

Finally I have found people who have the same problem.  I have found that my fingers split just where the nail and skin meet at the tip.  It is really annoying/painful and really gets in the way of doing things.

It makes me think what is going on inside my body that I don't know about.  No wonder I feel so tired.

I get this too. I've found that putting polysporin on it with a band-aid for a couple of days helps. I've also read that dipping your split fingertip in yogurt (I kid you not) helps, since in many cases it's a fungus (haven't tried this one).

I have four more rounds of Herceptin and I'll be so very glad when they're over.

My fingernails are terrible - they won't even grow out to the ends of my fingers before breaking and splitting.  I used to have nice hard nails - maybe I will again one day.

I guess that I am very lucky-I have been on Herceptin for 4 1/2 years and will be on it for life. I am Stage 4 with liver mets that have been in remission for 3 1/2 years (thanks to Herceptin).

Anywho, my nails split a bit along the sides, but they do best if I keep them short.

In most of the above cases, definitely Taxotere or Taxol will cause the major nail problems.

Hi everyone,

I just came back from my bi-monthly check-up while on Herceptin, and I asked the nurse practitioner about my awful looking nails.  She immediately responded "it's the Taxol".  I asked her if the Herceptin would also affect them, and she said no, that they are purely because of Taxol, and that it could take up to a year or two to improve.  SHe's a great NP and I have lots of confidence in her, but did she have to be so truthful? Cry  She did recommend Vitamin E and a supplement called Hair, Skin, and Nails, so I thought I'd give those a try.  Anyone tried them?

Best regards,

Mary Jo

I just keep them cut very short, less chance of snagging, etc... Shredded lots of pantyhose anyway though....
