I am writing for a close friend. She went to see her obgyn yesterday so told her she had all the systems of IBC: itchy breast, dimpling on the skin and hot breast. She also has seveer pain in the breast right upto her underarm. She also has swollen lymph nodes. She will get a mammo and u/s later this but does not see s Breast surgeon till May.
I am not familiar with IBC since I have IDC nor is my friend familiar. She is obviously very worried (she is 31) after what the doctor told her. Can the doctor know without doing any tests? Does it sound like she has IBC. What is the treatment plan and prognosis for IBC?
Thanks so much.

Hey, Well, I am happy that your friend is being checked out. I don't know if a Dr. can give a definite diagnosis w/ out a biopsy or a mammo. Whatever the case, I hope that she gets some answers very soon. Not knowing is almost worse than finding out and getting a battle plan into place. Please let her know that we are here if she needs us. Hugs and Prayers, Lexi |

Hi, I was diagnosed with IBC in Feb. It is difficult to diagnose from what I understand. A positive diagnosis is important before any treatment is done. With IBC chemo is BEFORE surgery in order to get clean margins. Encourage your friend to get a biopsy ASAP. God Bless, Cricket. |

Have your friend try to find a surgeon that will see her sooner. I used to care but I take a pill for that now.

Thanks. My friend did get a mammo and u/s yesterday and that was normal and all her lymph nodes looked swollen but normal on the u/s and mammograph. So she is not so worried anymore since the physical symptons combined with the swollen lymph nodes was very worrisome to us. I have pushed her to get them biopsied anyway and also get a skin biopsy when she sees the surgeon next week. I am just paranoid after what happened to me where the doctors kept brushing me off for a year and suddenly I was stage III B. Dx 2/22/2008, IDC, 6cm+, Stage IIIa, Grade 3, ER-/PR-, HER2- |

formygirls, I agree with you that I think your friend should have biopsies. I was very fortunate in having doctors that did NOT brush me off but quickly pursued a dx through normal mammo, u/s and FNA to an excisional biopsy that revealed stage 1 IDC. Cricket, I'm sending you a PM (personal message, check "My Home"). Dx 3/9/2007, IDC, <1cm, Stage I, Grade 2, 0/5 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

I agree that your friend needs a biospy.... as I understand it IBC does not always show up on show up on a mammogram or US.... Dr. Cristofinilli at MD Anderson is head of the IBC clinic in Houston and if you google his name you can get some really good information. IBC does not show up on an ultrasound nor mammo. Mine was not even diagnosed with a biopsy. it is sometimes hard to get a possitive with that. Luckily I had an underlying lump so they took it serious after 4 doctors. eraseibc.org is a good site. tina |

No..she had a mammo and a u/s which were normal. I asked her to get a biopsy since her nodes are swollen(even I can tell) plus she has some symptons on her skin. She went to a bs who said no need to biopsy and she backed off. But this bs did not know much about ibc. I was so frustated but she and her dh would not pursue so I gave up. I was mad but what more can I do. Dx 2/22/2008, IDC, 6cm+, Stage IIIb, Grade 3, ER-/PR-, HER2- |
