I went for my yearly mammo yesterday.  When I left the technician made a comment, " I can't tell the results, but when you leave here, you can make your appointment for next year"  I know the technician is not an expert but I took that as meaning the mammo looked pretty good.  When I got home today there was a message on my answering machine to call the Breast Center.  They said to call by 4:30, of course I just missed that time so now I have to wait until Monday.  I also tried calling my doctors office but of course she wasn't in either.  I know that most of the time the call backs are just precautionary but I am still a nervous wreck and now my whole weekend (including Mothers Day) will be hell.  My mother died from breast cancer at the age of 45 so I get scared every time I go for the mammo.  I am 50 years old.  All of you women are so strong and supportive so I guess I'm just looking for some encouragement.  Thanks so much for listening

Hello,

There should be a rule about calling patients with mammogram results on Friday afternoon. You are so right to be upset that a call was made and now you can't get through for a reason. It's unnecessarily upsetting, and frankly, why don't the people making the call think about what they are doing.

Now the good news is that statistics are with you that this will be a b9 nothing, if indeed they are even calling for anything related to a finding. About 80% of biopsies in the normal population are negative; this number adjusts for personal factors. So, that's great, and necessary to focus on this weekend, so you may enjoy your Mother's Day.

Please know we all wish the best news for you, and fully understand your frustration. I hope you can relax and enjoy yourself with your children.

Tender

It cannot be emphasized too strongly that treatment of each patient is a highly individualized matter. (FDA-approved labeling for warfarin (Coumadin) NDA 9-218/5-105)

If the tech couldn't see anything straight away - at worst that probably means that they missed some tiny irregularity that they want to re -check.

I do agree that they should be banned from making these calls on Friday afternoons...!  When you get to speak to him/her tell them...they need to know what it's like...

Thank you so much for your responses and well wishes.  I have one more question, when I call back the Breast Center on Monday, will they be able to tell me what my report said or will I have to call my doctor?

I'm not sure about your area but when I called my doctor back they were able to tell me what the techs notes were. They didn't say it in their words, they read exactly what the tech wrote. But I had to ask them how many spots they found because when they first called to set up an ultrasound they didn't tell me anything exept there were a few spots that needed to be looked into further. So definately ask. Hope everything turns out well for you :D!

I would see no reason for them not to tell you what the report says as it's not a diagnosis, it's a visual report...?
