Hi, I am new to this site and looking for some insight to my current situation. In January, I had a mammogram and it showed extremely dense breasts and a mass on the upper quadrant of my right breast. After the ultrasound the radiologist gave me a clean bill of health. Two weeks later I felt two lumps in the same area that was questionable. I had another ultrasound and it came back suspicious, bi-rad 4. I am going to the breast surgeon tomorrow and pretty nervous about it because I do not know what to expect and the waiting is torture. Any ideas about what to expect and can the surgeon usually tell right away if they think there is truly a cause for concern? Thank you.

If the doctor is concerned, (s)he will order a biopsy. They could also order an MRI, but that would not be definitive. A biopsy is the only sure way they can diagnose breast cancer.

I go to the surgeon tomorrow also. I could not have my biopsy last week because the radiologist didn't feel comfortable with the images. The surgeon will probably give me the option waiting and watching or taking them out. I've already made up my mind that the clusters of micrcalfications are coming out as soon as possible! |

I just returned from the surgeon and I have surgery scheduled for this coming Friday morning. He said he will have to go in two different areas since the calcifications are not close together. the results should be back tues. or wed. Yes, I'm nervous but will be glad to get these out and get the results. Worrying and waiting is absolutely the worst! |

I hope all went well with the surgery and you are in good spirits. Thanks for the responses. I have a core biopsy scheduled for June 2Honestly, I do not know why they make you wait so long. I dropped my films off last Tuesday after my visit with the surgeon. Waiting is torture. |

The waiting is the worse. I had a biospy last June and confirmed BC is left breast. The best thing I did was seek out 3 medical opinions from 3 breast care surgeons in Atlanta. I also consulted with drs. from Sloan Kettering in NYC (have a family member who was able to pave the way for me). Whatever happens....you can handle it...just arm yourself with facts and options and disregard personal opinions. Once you know the facts and prioritize what's important to you---you'll do what's right. I know its sometimes hard to find a silver lining...but if its BC--know that you have lots of options and its your call as to what you want to do. Take the time to weigh out your options....I waited almost 8 weeks before I opted for a bilateral mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. No regrets, peace of mind--cancer gone, lowest risk of reoccurence, no remainign treatments, and outstanding cosmetic outcome. While you're waiting...do your research and ask lots of questions. God bless.... |
