Ok....this will probably sound like whining. Lately there have been a lot of Victoria Secret commercials probably because it is that time of year: the annual sale, and, football. Anyway, my DH just can't seem to keep his eyes off the gorgeous models.

It made me think .... would it not be nice to have a "sexy" calendar of BC survivors, modeling VS lingerie ....during or after both reconstruction and/or treatment??

I am not through recon yet (no nipples, and, some scarring, hematomas, and symmetry work is needed) and have not worn anything but a sports bra for 10 months now. I don't feel real sexy (not yet anyway). I read on these boards that many here are quite happy with their recon. (This gives me a lot of hope - thank you sisters!). I am not asking anyone here to 'expose' their beautiful new selves. But, generally, I just thought it would be nice to see some sexy, beautiful, survivors (studio shots) as sort of an inspiration to those of us that struggle through the reconstruction, treatment, just hoping for a time when we feel the 'new beautiful.'

This was just a fleeting thought. (Maybe this has already been done!)

Happy new year,

Anne

Sounds like a brilliant idea for a 2009 calendar, Anne! Maybe we could see if the FORCE folks would be interested in something like this as they did the reconstruction calendar last year...

I still feel sexy most days.  Today I'm grouchy.  Anyway, I think this is a great idea.  It brought to mind a video clip I saw a few months back...

Wow, twink, that is powerful.

Wonderfully done.

Beautiful woman!

I was salivating just watching it!

Just goes to show, it's all in the eye of the beholder, and was I saw was pure, sweet sexyness.

Thanks,
Tender

I actually had the same idea a few years back, but I didn't know how to proceed with it. My idea was a bit more risque, having survivors pose a la the movie calendar girls. If you'd like to hook up and put something together, let me know.

Twink - Thanks for posting that link! As a woman who has had no reconstruction, that was truly inspiring and moving- and also very sexy.

Just wanted to past on, that once I talked to a prior high up VS employee buyer, and she flatly stated VS is solely profit making, treats women employees less than exemplary given the purse of the women is largely what keeps VS afloat, and is out to sell pure sexy products which mastectomies aren't viewed as.

I always wished to approach them on working a mastectomy, lumpectomy line up, to emphasize we're still hear, still sexy, etc.. But her impression was that would never fly with the head company decision makers, nor would they wish to link VS products with breast cancer.

Just one former fairly high up employee's take, but I didn't pursue it after I heard this. On the other hand, pink ribbons, breast cancer, mastectomies, lumpectomies, radiation needing soft camisoles have been in the head lines for years. And I've never heard or seen Victoria Secret step up to the plate, put products on the table, put some money into research, so perhaps this employee is correct.

How sad, when breast cancer affects one in eight women over their lifetime.

Tender, I have the same thoughts about VS.  The commercials alone will give you a good idea about their thought process.

They don't even address REAL women, let alone we who are not perfect in the boob and butt area.

I get irritated with just the commercials, wouldn't even go in the store now.

VS is the last company I would think to support the BC cause.  Ditto what iodine said as it is apparent what they are avertising in their commercials.

I personally have to agree with those that are irritated with vs...I hate their commercials...those are not "real" women and all they are concerned with is the bottom line...profit profit profit.

Of all the companies out there vs has a huge name...why can't they consider those of us that would love to look sexy again...I didn't have reconstruction...they don't make mastectomy bra's...its just disqusting in my opinion.

I'm a VS junkie- not for their undies but for their PINK collection. I live for their semiannual sales and hope for gift cards for my birthday. I could sure do without the underwear and bra commericals and the fashion shows that objectify the stereotypical female body though.

So glad Amy,all my "wisdom" comes from raising my own 2 and, it seems, all their friends.  I was the chaperone they always asked to go on trips with them.

In a way at least VS is honest.

Sometimes it seems like a lot of companies get on the pink ribbon trail in search of sales. You never really know whether $1 goes to bc or .01.

I don't think my son looks at them anymore, but I could be wrong. LOL

He lives in DC and has for several years, 35 and still single, dammit.  My dd is 38 and neither have SO, I'll have to rent grand kids.

Anyone looking for a great graphic designer/artist???  He's ready for a change.

Has anyone seen the video of Howard Stern's cat walk of  girls who have had reconstruction??  My brother told me about it, and from his male perspective he thought they all looked hot!!!  He was trying to make me feel better about my upcoming recon.

Says he watched video either last year or year before.  I can't find it on the web, he saw it on the show on tv.  Thought it would be interesting to see recon girls strut their sexy selves!!!

Could help those of us who are just starting the journey, (journey from hell, as I like to refer to it)

Twink, I thought the video was great!  It reminded me of the first chapter of "Why I Wore Lipstick To My Mastectomy."  She comments on the power boobs have over men.  It's a great social commentary...

I'd love to see a calendar made up of photos like the one of Deena Metzger - arms outstretched to show her scar.  She rocks!!

I agree - the Victoria's Secret catalogue is free light porn - when my daughter was about 17 she caught my 11 year old son and his friend at the side of the house with a catalogue they had taken out of the mail.  Embarrassing for them!  We secretly chuckledWink

I also think the idea of a calendar of survivors or something along those lines is a great idea!

The whole thread is very interesting and relevant, and I also loved the video. Boy, if I could move like that lady...

I have been also wondering about all the magazines with fashion ads and cosmetics. They often publish an article about the risks of BC, how to face the odds, or a survival article... but I also feel it would be good to have occasionally something on how survivors - all of us - face beauty and fashion. We are MANY, MANY sadly. It should interest manufacturers, advertisers, magazines!! it is a potential public of 1 on 7 or 1 on 8 women - maybe a mag like MORE could be interested.

As VS goes, yes, they are after income, profit. but if being good and nice could generate profits, why not? maybe not through their stores, but a line of undies that could work for us would be a source of income....

I'm a VS fanatic and can't even be in the same mall as one without needing to go in and buy at least one thing!

Anyway, as per the calendar suggestion, I thought I'd post this link to Breast of Canada. Each year they put out a calendar that is all breasts....healthy breasts, surgically altered breasts, mastectomy sites and just lots of breasts....big, little, old, young, etc., etc., etc. It's really a beautiful calendar!

There is a local photographer who has put out calendars for the past 4 years of BC survivors. They are not 'racy' but put a face to BC. They use local men and women in the calendars. The web site is  http://www.throughhealingeyes.org/

I have put my name and my mom's name in to be 'calendar girls' next year. The money from the sale of the calendars goes to the local cancer centers to help others going through treatments.
