I'm having a lb mastectomy with immediate lat flap reconstruction with an implant on April 7th. I haven't seen many people who are having surgery in April. Anyone else out there??

I have just been scheduled for next Tues. I thought I would do DIEP reconstruction but both the plastic surgeon and my oncologist surgeon prefer the lat flap method. I need to reconsider my options. If I go with the lat flap I am on for Tuesday and if I want a second opinion then my surgery date gets pushed back a week or two. I found the lump myself end of Feb. and everything seemed to be going so slow and now it seems to be going so fast. What when into your decision? What have you done to prepare? |

I found my lump myself also in mid Feb , had a needle biopsy that came back positive. I have chosen a mastectomy for my piece of mind as my sister and aunt both passed away from breast cancer. I have chosen no reconstruction as I don't want to go back in for more surgerys and it never really was a hard decision for me as I don't have much to begin with. |

Newbie, ooo nipples! I can't wait for that. How long after your surgery did you have to wait before you could do them?? Gymrat, I have to have the lat flap because I had a tummy tuck 12 years ago. I'm having with an implant because I am about a D cup and my PS said I will get a more natural look with both. My main concern was to get this done and start to get my life back. This is the first step in that process.
You have to listen to your gut and be at peace with whatever decision you make. Everyone is different and every case of cancer is different. What works for some does not work for all. I hope that helps and all the best. Michelle Dx 1/29/2008, DCIS, 1cm, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/0 nodes, ER+/PR+ |

Michelle, I had my original bilat diep on 9/19, my stage 2 (tummy (dog ears and scars) and breast revision (make them more even and make the circles smaller) on 1/25, and my nipples finally on 4/10. My doctor is very conservative in terms of healing between surgeries. He likes the body to adjust so that you actually have an idea of what you want to do. Good luck to everyone on their surgeries! We can do it! |

Hi sue....there are a few of us on April 2 going to be a busy day ! We will have to share our journeys and help each other through. I am busy trying to get the house in order, and making sure our daughter who is 12 will be looked after that day. Our 2 boys 19 & 21 came home from out of town to see me this week which i wasn't expecting....boy when they want to they sure can surprise you, makes you think you did something right in raising them ! Just waiting for the call tomorrow to know what time we have to be there. The surgery is in a town an hour away so it might be an early morning...like I would be sleeping anyways ! Have the recliner waiting for me in the livingroom and know my hubby will be at my beckon call....I guess it won't be all bad ! Good luck to everyone with surgery tomorrow |

J--we seem to be close. I am having my lumpectomy on April 21 in Naples. I am 40 and after going in for my very first "routine" mammogram 3 weeks ago, I am now facing this. It is very scary, but oddly comforting to know that so many of us are all going through surgery around the same time. Best of luck to all of us Ellie Dx 3/24/2008, DCIS, 2cm, Grade 3, / nodes, ER+/PR+ |

I am having an expander with free flap April 3rd. I am really excited and really scared too. You would think after a lumpectomy in 2000 and a mastectomy in 2004, I would be use to surgery. it took me 4 yrs to decide to have reconstruction. Oh wow to have a boob again. yipeeeeeeee But still dread the surgery and hubby hitting every pothole in town coming home. LOL Trish

I am having lat surgery as well on 4/14/08. I am scared to death!! PLEASE let me know how your surgery goes!! I feel better after reading some of the comments on here (I am new to this site). Mine is a recurrence at prior mastectomy site. My original surgery was in 1999 and I had radiation. I am really worried about healing and movement afterwards. Thanks, Susan |

Dottie, looks we're surgery buddies! I know what you mean about the range of emotions. So far, I've been pretty stable. A tad more weepy than normal but only one crying fit (really it was a good old fashioned temper tantrum). Well last night as I was brushing my teeth before bed, I statred crying and couldn't stop. I literally cried myself to sleep. I'm 40 years old and don't remember ever doing that. I felt total panic. I'm hoping this will get better as I get closer. I've planned a spa day for Friday - I'm sure that will help. Dx 1/29/2008, DCIS, 1cm, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/0 nodes, ER+/PR+ |
