I know we are only one week into May, but I have had my bilat mast, nodes, recon scheduled since 21Apr For June 5th. That was the earliest date that my bs and ps could double date with me. I go in next week for all my pre-op work, and meet again with ps. I am hoping my daughter will be able to go with me, as she gets home from college this weekend. Wish mine was sooner, cause I'm ready to kick the Camel to the curb, and move on.......

Unfortunately I am scheduled for June 10. I too would have liked to have the surgery before memorial day, but couldn't fit me into the scheudle. I am having a l mastectomy with lymph node disection, and tissue expander. I was dx'd with DCIS in early Feb, had lumpectomy. The radiologist was concerned about an unusual lymph node so wanted it explored before starting radiation. It turned out to be metastic breast ca. So now the mastectomy. This whole thing has not gone according to the book. I should be through with the treatment and moved on by now. I'm frustrated, confused and completely overwhelmed. |

There was a June Mastectomies thread that got started a week or two ago, but I think it fell off the page.... Anyway, I'll join you on this one. Surgery scheduled for June 26th: Right mastectomy, left reduction (DDD to a C cup). I'm planning for delayed reconstruction (DIEP) on the right side after radiation. I was hoping to get this over with earlier in June but I'm trying to look on the bright side -- I just finished chemo last week so this way I have more time to get my strength back. Rosy, I understand the frustration about the surprises. I was dx with a small, 1cm IDC tumor in December -- I thought I'd have a lumpectomy and radiation and be done with it. Turned out I had 1 positive node, DCIS in all margins, and the cancer turned out to be more aggressive than they first thought (grade 3 instead of 2). We WILL get through this! Hello to the June gals. I'm recovering from my 4/2 surgery, so I'm trying to stay in touch and hopefully pass along any tips I can to those going into surgery after me. Good luck to you all. I hope things go smoothly. carollyn - I know what you mean about waiting. My 4/2 surgery was scheduled on 2/6. . .it was a long 8 weeks. I found out later that the BS and PS both took vacations in March which I'm sure played a part in finding a time they could hook up to do me. Oh well, I'm glad they were both well rested when they did my surgery. . .LOL! Rosy - Hugs to you girl. It is so tough when things don't go according to the plan they give us. I had a lumpectomy last Feb followed by rads in April & May. When I finished my rads I should've been able to put this behind me and move on. Unfortunately, I had a bad reaction to rads which resulted in having a mastectomy in April. There are definitely moments of anger and frustration along this journey, but just come here and vent. . .someone is always available to ease your burden. When I was at my PS's office this morning her nurse put it in perfect perspective. . .she said, "My Mom always told be to be thankful I'm on the right side of the dirt." So I think that's where I'm going to put my thoughts. All this will pass eventually and life will be good again. Hugs to all Sheila . . .Never regret something that made you smile.

Hi all: I'm having a mastectomy and axillary node dissection (right side) on June 5th. This is my 4th time in surgery since I initially had a mastectomy (left side) almost 4 years ago. Prior to that I had lymph nodes removed in two separate surgeries (also on the left side). Weird though, the lymph node removal was more painful than the mastectomy...I'm nervous about recovery--having both procedures done at the same time, this time... Since the cancer recurred in the right breast a few months ago (this is my second recurrence), I've decided to remove the breast (and tumour) once and for all. I don't remember too much about my mastectomy years ago except that it was day surgery and I was swimming in the ocean two weeks later. It was relatively uneventful. I'm finding these threads a really useful refresher. Good luck to everyone having surgery... Cheryl in Toronto Dx 12/23/2003, , Stage IV, Grade 3, ER-/PR-, HER2+ |

Your emotions are all normal. The weeks leading up to surgery were my worst moments (had bilateral mastecomy in September and last week had my expanders exchanged). Stay calm and know that everythign you feel is normal. The best advice.....trust your doctors and have no doubts in your mind about their medical opinions and abilities. And don't hesitate to ask every question you have. I have drove my doctors nuts since September....even calling nurses and making a friend out of the office manager who faced BC 2 years ago. If you're married, have kids, belong to clubs, or involved in your community--don't be afraid to share how you feel. Reach out and those who have faced it too (and lord knows there are many)--will reach back to you. God speed....you're in our thoughts and hearts. |

Hello All, I'm new to this board, but have appreciated all the advice so far. I feel like a bit of an intruder since I'm only having prophylactic bilateral mastectomy with expanders on June 11. I feel for all of you dealing with nodes, rads, and chemo. I'm a bit of a control freak (hence the prophylactic surgery), and would like to know if anyone has seen a list of what to do in the days leading up to surgery, and what to take to the hospital. I've flipped mattresses, changed smoke alarm batteries, stocked the freezer w/ husband-friendly items. Any ideas would be appreciated. |

"Only" a bilateral mastectomy??? If you ask me, that's a pretty big deal -- and even if it isn't, everyone is welcome here, because everyone's treatment/surgery feels like a big deal to them. Your pre-surgery organization is very impressive. The only task I have thought of so far is that I'd better clean my car before June 26th because my aunt is coming from California to stay with me post-surgery and she has the world's cleanest car. My 7-year-old son will be staying with his father (we're separated) so thankfully, I won't have to worry about taking care of him while I'm recovering. There are a lot of good packing/preparation lists on here but I'm not ready to look at them yet. I just finished chemo 2 weeks ago and I'm focusing on getting my strength back before surgery (single mastectomy + reduction on the other side). Hi everyone - I too have surgery in June on the 4th. Only two weeks from now. I finished dose dense chemo on May 2nd. I have to follow surgery with radiation so am not getting reconstruction now, have to wait for 6 to 12 months for that. I'm second guessing myself all over the place.....am scheduled for a mastectomy and SNB. Had an option of a lumpectomy, but the amount of tissue they will have to remove is above the recommended amount for a lumpectomy (over 1/3 as the original tumor was 5.5 cm). Could have opted for an expander for the 6 to 12 months I have to wait for reconstruction, but didn't want to take the chance (30 to 50% chance) of having expander failure and having to go back into surgery to have it removed during radiation - thus delaying the radiation. Anxiety has started to creep in..... Thanks for reading, I know I haven't posted much (although I have read MUCH) here. Can't imagine what it will be like to wake up after surgery and know that part of me is gone. |

For the girls that don't read alot on this board, your should. Where did you think I learned everything from using a shoelace tied around your neck to hang your drain tubes during showers? Here! Where do you think I learned about buying the U-shaped pillow for breast feeding moms to use right after surgery so my arms are raised and might lessen the chance of lymph-oma arms? Here! Where do you think I learned about BRAC1/BRAC2 genectic links and tests? Here! Where do you think I learned so much about so many womans same situations, different emotions, and different outcomes from so I could choose which outcome would be mine? RIGHT HERE!!!! It is home, for when I need to get away from home. This board keeps me strong, keeps me thinking positively straight. Exactly were we all need to be. Hi Anne--I just had my exchange 2 weeks ago tomorrow. For a year I've looked forward to that day. I was amazed to discover how emotional it was for me for 2-3 days. I had such high expectations but kept looking down at what looked like hamburger buns and thinking will they ever look like breasts! My life has been moving really fast and I am cramming as fast as I can. I wrote down the shoe string and pillow infor. I just found this board this weekend. I had a core needle biopsy on 5/6, had a lumpectomy on 5/14 and now sched. for the masetctomy 6/3 but may move it a week later waiting on PS to sched with Surgeon. I have DCIS, but he thinks it is in my entire breast and not in the nodes yet. But I feel very thankful and lucky compared to others. I guess this is my wake up call and everything happens for a reason. Thank you and to the others here to help the newbies with good information and keeping positive attitudes.
