Harmony,

I am sorry you find yourself having to deal with this dreaded disease. When were you diagnosed? Will you need any chemo?  I had 8 rounds of chemo, and a mastectomy on my left side back in October.  The procedure really was not bad at all, and recovery was rather quick.  Just be sure to ask about exercises to do after, especially if you are having lymph nodes removed.  It is important to do these.

Please feel free to come here and ask any questions. This is a great place to come for knowledge and support.

It is a shock to hear the words..and tough to deal with. I am a little over a year since I found out...and trust me, time does heal all wounds.

I am glad you have your daughter near by. I live with my 16 yr old, and she was the only one in my home with me, but I had lots of help through my journey.

Take care...I will check in on you.

Hugs,

Lisa

And KEEP up on the range of motion exercises! It's amazing how quick your shoulder can lock up a person! ;(

The mast as she said was quite bearable. Other than emotional, my pain was more from the drain sitting on my rib than anything else. The armpit was more painful than the mast, but that was mostly do to an OnQ pain pump that was placed above the breast for 4-5 days.  Its just a little catheter that is slipped in over the breast against the chest, and delivers pain meds for 4-5 days through a pump you wear on a shoulder strap.  Neatest thing really.  Pain pills were minimal for the rest.  AFter the drain was out on day 6, things really improved.

Good Luck and let us know how it's going!

Harmony,

My heart goes out to you. This is not a place you ever would have wanted to be at, but I am glad you found it, as you will get a lot of help and support here. I added you to our May Surgery list--you may want to read all the posts, as there is a lot of information from everyone. We all have our good days and bad days, and through sharing, we can help each other cope. I hope your daughter could stay with you for a couple of days postop, or at least come over to help. That is so good that she lives nearby! Just ask any questions you want, and I am sure someone will respond.

Take care,

Kathy

I just had a single modified radical mastectomy on May 13th.  You will definitely need some help.  My sister-in-law came over in the evenings when my husband had to go to work and would help me make dinner for the kids and things like that.  The best thing to do is if you can is to make meals ahead of time and freeze them so all you have to do is warm them up. I need some help changing the dressings at the drain sites also.  I am 38 and this whole thing has been a little difficult for me also.  Just stay as positive as you can and just do a little planning ahead of time and everything will be just fine.........Hugs
