Hi, I was recently diagnosed with IDC Stage 2 (we think, waiting on Pet scan results) Grade 3. I just got back from having a Pet scan and I am worried about what the results will look like. I'm interested in hearing about experiences with Pet Scans. I hear they can produce false positive results. Can anyone share some insight?? Thank you!!

Pet Scans are very sensitive- the good thing is that if they are negative, they are negative. I was told by my onc to be prepared on follow up pets that there could be false positives. So, I am prepared with anxiety meds to take while we wait for results. Diane Dx 7/7/2007, IBC, 2cm, Stage IIIb, Grade 3, 2/22 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

My mom has PET scans to monitor her mets. It was the PET scan that picked up her mets to liver and bones. It was a shock to us all as she was only stage 1 on initial dx 4 years ago. PET scans have not shown any flase positives on anyone I have met who has mets. If it is negative it is negative. You have to be sure to follow the instructions to prevent false positives, not eating the wrong diet prior to the scan, not exercising before the scan. I believe the only time they have come up with false positives is when they do these scans on diabetics, because they infuse you with glucose which can alter the uptake of the glucose. My mom's have always been accurate. She is very close to NED, she has another scan in 2 weeks so hopefully this will be the one. Mom has Stage IV mets to liver and bones, details of dx below

I certainly understand your anxiety. The first PET Scan I had last year about this time, I could just see lighting up like a Christmas tree. Fortunately, there were only two areas (other than the known ones) in question, and a needle biopsy showed them to be nothing. I just had a followup PET Scan after all my treatments and will get the results tomorrow. Not nearly as anxious this time - figure what will be, will be. Hang in there - prayers are with you! Hi all: Just read all the comments. I have just been diagnosed with IDC. I've had my biopsy and an MRI. Having a PET scan next Tuesday. I did just fine with the biopsy and MRI but I'm anxious about the PET scan.(Don't know why) My instructions were to be inactive the day before and nothing to eat or drink 6 hours prior and blood sugar has to be under 200. I am a diabetic but my blood sugar is always under 100 of a morning so that shouldn't be a problem. But do they monitor you so your blood sugar doesn't go to low? I have had IBC on the right breast and had a mastectomy and the surgeon could do either a lumptectomy or mastectomy which she recommends. Also, she is recommending genetic testing. At this point I'm just wanting the cancer out and gone. Bettis |
