Today i went in for my second opinion following mastectomy. i thought i was High grade DCIS, with microinvasion, stage 1, no nodes, her2+,
ER PR-. The doc today informed me that Kaiser pathologist missed the cancer in my node. My husband and I were shocked. Now I am going from no follow up to chemo and herceptin. I'm very shaken. I don't think I will have more nodes out- i will let the chemo do it's work there. That's what the doc suggested. So now I am stage 2 and trying to get someone at my HMO to see me to get the ball rolling.

Wow, magentagirl, I guess that's why 2nd opinions are so important, right?  Imagine if you had not had that second look.

The transition from DCIS/no follow-up to invasive BC with a positive node = chemo, is an enormous difference.  As soon as you find out what the plan is, let us know, OK?  There are lots of us here who are on chemo right now.  My next treatment is tomorrow afternoon, in fact.  As anyone will tell you, it's tough, but it is "do-able".

I am sorry for your troubles. DCIS too, is often difficult and throws a curve ball on occasion.

One question you might ask your doctors is whether there are isolated cells in this node that was positive, or more. Then too, is a pathologist reviewing the mastectomy for signs of microinvasion? These are all steps which may be done on what has already been removed at surgery, yet they may help guide discussion of further node removal, and treatment choices.

Such a shock it is when this occurs and after it settles, please don't hesitate to return to your doctors for their review again. I found it took a while to get my head wrapped around it all.

As Otter said, we're here too. Good wishes being sent today to you.

That is a Surprise & Not a fun one.  But I am glad they caught that missed Node!

Let us know when you get your treatment time table going.
