Just curious..... how many of you attend support group meetings in your area? What do you find helpful about them? I attend two different ones. One with older women and the other with a younger group of women. Since I have had sooooo much anxiety about this cancer diagnosis, I have also been seeing an oncology social worker.

Hi Sherry, I tried to attend the support meetings and it was good to have the support of people that had gone through this and I went till they decided to have the Staff from Hospice come visit--that done it, I did not feel I was in denial--I know the serious of this illness, but I was not ready to hear whatever they had to say. I would say if it helps and you feel good, stay with the groups. This was 6 years ago---however, I have very much appreciated the support and strengths of the ladies posting here. This is about you now!!! Linda C. LINDA C

If there is a Gilda's Club in your area, run to it. That was my salvation during treatment. All their services are free. Take care. Cherryl |

Hi Sherry. We don't have a group in my area; the nearest one is 45 minutes away. I would have liked to participate but with the fatigue from treatment I wasn't able to. Good news today though- I received word from the clinic that I go to for treatment today that they will be starting one in my area next week. I will be there. I also have some anxiety and I think that it is important for me to share and have others share their experience. |

It has been a while since I've been out here. Glad to see this topic. I moved back to my home town in IL and have yet to get to a group here. I understand there are only 2 of them. In NC, I went to a small group of 12 with just women. However, the larger group--of approx. 40--included both men and women. I had good and bad to say about both. I found it just good to be in the presence of those that could understand without me explaining anything to them and free to say what I really was going through, or be comfortable saying nothing at all...If I had a challenge, they were there to suggest what I could do to to settle a problem I might have. That was good. I am thinking about starting a new group in my town that has all types of cancers. I think we have good things we can learn from each other. Sometimes these larger groups have members with more than one kind of cancer. Dx 5/18/2007, IDC, 3cm, Stage II, Grade 3, 5/19 nodes, mets, HER2- |
