Breastcancer.org is hiring! Looking for a new Virtual Support Group Facilitator and Community Mod

Facilitator for Virtual Support Groups & Community Moderator

Position Summary

Breastcancer.org—the leading online resource for breast cancer and breast health—is seeking a part-time facilitator to lead virtual support groups for individuals diagnosed with breast cancer and their caregivers. This role also includes providing moderation support within our vibrant online community discussion forums.

As a facilitator and moderator, you’ll play a vital role in advancing our mission: to support and empower everyone impacted by breast cancer. The ideal candidate is a compassionate, experienced group facilitator and online community moderator, with a background in mental health or nursing, and a strong understanding of breast cancer and its treatments.

Key Responsibilities

Virtual Support Group Facilitation

  • Organize and lead or co-lead 2–3 virtual support groups weekly or bi-weekly (each session lasts 90-120 minutes).
  • Manage group scheduling, registration, and confirmation emails via the Zoom platform.
  • Welcome participants, facilitate introductions, and guide supportive, engaging conversations.
  • Share relevant educational content and resources as needed.
  • Document session notes and participant insights in a shared Google Sheet.
  • Send timely follow-up emails to all session participants.

In-Session Support Includes:

  • Cultivating a safe, inclusive, and compassionate space where participants feel comfortable bringing their full selves.
  • Demonstrating empathy, openness, and respect across diverse identities and experiences.
  • Navigating silence, emotional expression, and occasional conflict with confidence and care.
  • Managing group dynamics effectively and responding thoughtfully to individual needs.
  • Setting healthy boundaries while maintaining flexibility to meet the evolving needs of each group.
  • Recognizing signs of complicated grief and understanding the impact of different types of loss—and knowing when to refer participants for specialized support.

Online Community Moderation

  • Partner with our moderator team to coordinate scheduling and support member engagement.
  • Welcome new members, respond to private messages, and foster participation through thoughtful discussion prompts, comments, and educational links.
  • Monitor forums to remove off-topic or inappropriate content and flag any misinformation.
  • Uphold Breastcancer.org’s community guidelines and ensure a safe, respectful space for all.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in nursing, social work, psychology, counseling, or related mental health field.
  • Experience facilitating health-related support groups, ideally in oncology.
  • Solid understanding of breast cancer, treatments and their impact, and emotional needs of patients and caregivers.
  • Comfortable working with people in all stages of breast cancer
  • Previous online community moderation experience is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently while staying connected and accountable to a team.
  • Strong clinical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Proficient with Zoom, Slack, Basecamp, and Google Workspace (Docs & Sheets in particular).

NOTE: We respectfully ask that applicants that may have been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer are not currently in active treatment (hormonal therapy is not considered active treatment). We do welcome applicants with metastatic breast cancer.

What we offer

  • Amazing opportunity to contribute to a virtual approach in mental health support
  • Supervision and peer support from experienced moderation team
  • Remote work
