I have some debilitating side effects after taking Anastrozole for 2.5 years. I am considering not taking this hormone therapy anymore. What do you think?

Hi blissjulie and welcome to Breastcancer.org,

We're so sorry to hear you're having a bad experience with anastrozole (Arimidex). We're sure others here can share their experiences with this medication -- could you tell us a little more about what you're experiencing specifically?

In addition, there's a very popular and helpful thread here called For Arimidex (anastrozole) users - new, past, and ongoing where you could introduce yourself and meet others who may be going through a similar situation.

We hope this helps and that you find relief soon!

I only lasted 10 months on anastrazole before I called it quits due to crippling SE's and switched to letrozole. I experienced problems with it as well, toughed it out for over 2+ years and thought to stick it out because I did not want to quit AI's due to fear of recurrence of BC. Finally had to stop the letrozole (again due to crippling side effects) and am currently on exemestane. I wish I had made the switch to exemestane earlier. My MO had been pushing it but I was reluctant based on my negative experience with the other 2 AI's. It was the only one left so it was essentially my last hope and Tamoxifen was not even a consideration for me; too many side effects.

I have been quite pleased with my experience on exemestane and I urge you to try another AI to see if you can find a good fit. I do not have the unrelenting back pain nor joint pain, the night sweats and the cognitive challenges I had on the other two. So it can be an issue of trial and error to find the best fit for you as well. I urge you to discuss this with your MO to find the best fit. You are not alone in this journey and not alone with your AI experience. Hope you find your "fit". ((Hugs))
