I haven't posted or been around in awhile. For me its been good to take a break. But after going in for my 4 month check I find myself here.

My labs are looking a little screwy. My liver enzymes are high. They have been climbing for the last year or so. MO is going to repeat lab in 2 weeks. I'm nervous. I'm having discomfort on my right side as well, but that has been going on a couple weeks.

Just feeling nervous.

Hi Tangandchris,

Your post sounds exactly as I am feeling! I am about 9 months past chemo and 6 past radiation completion and already had a scan back in Nov, where nothing showed up, but at my last regular Dr apt, my liver enzymes were elevated and i have some discomfort on my right side. It doesn't hurt really, but feels different. I don't know how to explain it. I notice it mostly when I lay down on that side. I have been worrying about it of course every night. I meet w my MO and regular Dr next month so praying its nothing. But in any case, I feel your nervousness here too!

Hope yours is nothing as well!!

Do you take Tamoxifen? One gal from my chemo group had sky high liver enzymes on t, which returned to normal once it was discontinued

Can I ask how high your liver levels were? I have been on Arimidex for about a year and a half. My liver counts have been slightly high since this past October. I retested in November and they stayed the same (still slightly high). I just had my 6 month oncologist visit and they were still elevated but down a bit. My MO wasn't concerned but since I was, he said I could stop Arimidex for a month, redo bloodwork. I am on the fence as what to do.

Anyway just how I feel.

Have there been any updates? I am curious to know if it's possible to have an elevated enzymes report and it turned out to be okay/enzymes went back down?

On Friday, I learned that mine are elevated 40 and 53. I retest on July 5th. In the meantime, I am rethinking the supplements I take, exercise, proper sleep, stress management, etc so that maybe the retest will turn out fine. I Do Not take Tamoxifen, but I have been taking for the past year: Evening Primrose Oil, Tummeric, DIM Plus, CoQ10, Vit C, Vit D3, Fish Oil, Baby aspirin, and Magnolia Tree bark extract and a multi-vitamin. I just stopped taking CoQ10 because I read that it can adversely affect the liver.

Has anyone changed their lifestyle, diet, supplements etc to help their liver? Curious to know any tips.

Thanks!

My ALT was 47. All other test results were the same as in the past. Within normal range. This is the only one that was above and increased since last test 5 months ago. Range is 45 and lower. My Mo didn’t call so I assume he is not concerned. Is there a reason this has increased. I am taking Letrozole

ThinkingPositive - Did you sleep well the few nights before your blood test? Eating well? Any other vitamins or medicines? Excercise? I think those things affect the liver enzymes. I posted a few weeks ago about elevated results. I just retested recently and my liver enzymes are back down to normal. In the weeks before my re-test, I re-evaluated my vitamins, ate better, slept better, and ramped up my exercise a bit and got good results.

Good luck to you!

ThinkingPositive - maybe your MO will only contact you when both AST and ALT are elevated? Both of mine were elevated so I was called, and they set the retest date for 6 weeks later. Maybe you should just call them and see what they say. It could ease your mind.

A surgeon friend once told me that taking aspirin and NSAIDs can elevate liver enzymes. If you had a bit more to drink (like on vacation or holidays) before a blood test, this can affect rates as well. Mine were slightly elevated once because of the above, and my MO had me retest after a week (I abstained from any alcohol, not even one glass of wine with dinner--and stopped all pain meds--joint pain from an AI was causing problems hence the need for OTC pain meds in the first place) and my liver enzymes dropped right back down, well within normal.

I hope you get some relief from the worry soon.

Back in December I had to go the ER with a strangulated hernia. While there, they did blood work and both AST and ALT were elevated. I don't remember the exact numbers but they were almost double the normal. I kind of freaked out but then calmed down becausebtwo weeks prior I had bloodwork done with MO and they liver enzymes were perfect. We concluded it was a result of the nasty cold I had (the coughing fits caused the hernia!) and I hadbeen taking taking DayQuil for a few days. I never exceeded the recommended dose but even at prescribed doses can cause elevation. I know the worry. Hope all is well
