Hi everyone,

I just rounded the 3 week mark post-left mastectomy. I am right handed so I have had a lot of use on this side while recovering. I noticed a few days ago the right was a bit tender, especially after taking some longer walks, and assumed just overuse or overall hormonal tenderness. Fast forward to this morning and when I reached over my head to grab something, I felt a twinge. I started to feel the breast and to my horror felt a lump about 2cm in size in the lower left quadrant. It is about 2.5 cm from my nipple.

I have a hx of issues on this side with cysts and call-backs USNs post mastectomy. 1 year to the day before the Dx on my left, in 2018, I had a large lump later Dx via USN as benign cysts. No irregular or new findings showed on the right with my 2019 bilateral mammogram. They did not, USN to the right this time. It feels JUST like the tumor on the left. It is hard, flat and rounded. For those in Michigan, it feels like a small Petoskey stone. It is also tender.

Of course it's the weekend, and of course coronavirus has all "non-essential" clinic visits on hold here in Michigan. I have my alarm set to call the MO when their office opens tomorrow morning. In the meantime, my anxiety level just shot through the roof.

I am so hoping it is a cyst again but can't help second guessing my decision to go with uni vs bi-lateral mastectomy.

Anyone else been through this?

OnlyGirlof5,

I haven’t had this but anxious to get the left side off. I had the testing and nothing showed up on that side back in July. They didn’t want to remove both because of surgery concerns because I have MCAD deficiency and they were worried about how I would do during surgery.

That is not non-essential. I hope they did ultrasound and an MRI to test the other side especially since it was such a short time ago. I have/had a lot of cysts that were benign.

Good luck getting in quickly.

Hi peregrinlady, no. They did not do an USN either. I asked for an USN while in the decision-making process to choose uni or bi-lateral. I brought up the Hx of the right, but they assured me my mammogram showed nothing and was read by 3 radiologists. I should have insisted but I trusted my doctors. I have fibrous, dense tissue and know now it is difficult for a mammogram to find all cancers in these situations. I am so scared!

I am sorry to hear that. My surgeon immediately ordered a MRI for the other side before operating. They didn’t find anything on that side but it did reveal another smaller tumor forming on the cancer side. My tumor was not found by mammo nor ultrasound, but that is fairly rare, hopefully. Try not to worry too much yet since you do have a history of cysts on that side. But I would insist on further testing since they neglected to do it before surgery. Hopefully MRI’s are still being performed since they do not involve masks, respirators, etc. At the least you should get an ultrasound. Please let us know what happens when you call the MO’s office and try to keep busy until then.

AnnC2019 and Peregrinelady, I do not understand the lack of additional testing for the right side. I just went through my notes from all these appointments. I asked for an USN at my first consult with the surgeon. He assured me the mammogram was clear and all the review was sufficient. I reviewed my past results and realized I had either been called back for a follow-up or had both mammogram and USN on the right for both prior screenings. In 2017, it was indicated as cysts. In 2018, when I found the lump, they had me meet with a surgeon who assured me they were cysts/benign masts. She explained they could come and go and the general rule was to leave them alone. They would consider aspiration if they became larger or uncomfortable. December nothing was found, but no USN was ordered this time around. I even called back after reading all my past reports and asked again. They continued to tell me that the rate was <1% for bilateral breast cancer and on both sides at the same time was even less. I had to go with their suggestion.

I am trying not to second guess my doctors. They are considered the best in our region. But this really has me nervous. I will definitely be insisting on more extensive testing for this!

Were the cysts in previous years in the same area as this lump? It is reassuring that the risk for bilateral cancer is so low.

Pergrinelady, yes in general. My husband just got home and said it feels more smooth than the tumor felt on the other side. He describes it as a horse pill. Kind of a tubular, rounded lump. I looked up blocked milk duct and he said "bingo! that is what it feels like," It is on the lower part of my breast. If you were looking at the nipple as the center of a clock, it is at about 7 or 8 o'clock. Tumor symptoms list hard, not palpable, commonly on the upper breast, etc.

Trying to keep it together. Thank goodness 8am Monday is not too far away. Hoping they will get me in immediately considering I just had surgery.

Thank you for your calming words. These past few months have been horrendous. Being stuck in the house for so long is not helping.

Not yet. The clinic couldn't decide whether they wanted me to come in for an exam first. They decided at 4pm yesterday to go ahead and order imaging first. I am awaiting a call back to get it scheduled. Meanwhile, it seems larger and can be felt with little palpatation. and is very tender. So my fingers are crossed this is a cyst or blocked duct. Thanks for checking in Peregrinelady!

I have an appointment for both a mammogram and USN tomorrow afternoon. The lump is not as tender as it was a few days ago, but I have noticed today the breast feels achy today. It could be my imagination due to fixation, but it seems like it may be a little smaller today. Perhaps hopeful? I will at least know by mid afternoon tomorrow if it is a concern as they will tell me then if they think it needs to be biopsied.
