10+ years cancer free but....

Hi - I was diagnosed in 2010 with a Stage 1 IDC, no lymph node involvement, so had lumpectomy and brachytherapy and took Tamoxifen for 10 years. Long story but two weeks ago I went to see my gastro doctor thinking I might have diverticulitis (I'm 61 and it runs in my family). He did a contrast CT scan of my abdomen and pelvis. All clear, however they found a suspicious lesion in the upper right quadrant, so sent me to my breast surgeron, she did exam and ultrasound and does not see so is sending me on to my oncologist. However, she looked further with the ultrasound and found my axillary lymph nodes are suspicious and having fine needle aspiration tomorrow. Could there be breast cancer there and they aren't seeing it?

unfortunately it could be. Cancer can be very hard to spot & they cancer cells have to get to a certain size before our imaging can catch it.

I hope it all turns out to be nothing but it's good that you have such a thorough and attentive healthcare team.

Keep us posted on what you find out!

thank you. I definitely will post what they find out. The PA that was doing the ultrasound, I have seen her for over 10 years now and just her reaction to what she saw is unnerving. Granted they can't tell everything but they have a good idea what the nodes that are benign vs malignant look like. Funny thing is I was dismissed from the breast surgeon and oncologist in August, so I am hoping this is just a "I miss seeing ya" visit.

Update - thankfully the axillary FNA came back with no cancer cells. So the Breast Specialist is sending me to my oncologist so that she can further investigate the suspicious lesion discovered during the CT scan of my abdomen. She did say the oncologist may want the lymph node removed, but that will be determined once I meet with the oncologist. I will see the breast specialist again in November to ultrasound the lymph node again. I do feel better knowing there was nothing showing in the lymph node biopsy.
