I was diagnosed last August.  The oncologist told me not to drink alcohol at all.  (I hardly drink anything anyway but was a bit surprised by this.)

football nut,

I have been told 3 drinks a week, different Dr. one drink a day. Lots of studies show alcohol & cancer connection but many of the ladies never drink or a glass of wine twice a year & get breast cancer.

Individual choice, I have a couple of beers, or a glass of wine & enjoy it. My dx is stage 3, so I know my risk is significant. Moderation & common sense. This horrific disease really causes a lot of changes & anxiety.

I have not been "warned off" alcohol, and do drink in moderation. Though I must admit I didn't drink during chemo as nothing tasted good. I attended a talk the other evening by our local radiologist who was talking about risks of recurrence, and alcohol was a negligible factor.

yes, there appears to be a correlation between alcohol consumption and certain types of cancer, including BC. My RO mentioned it to me but said they don't know if it's cause and a effect, or even a societal correlation. (i.e. people who drink a lot also do some mysterious thing that increases their likelihood of BC).  But I found one study on PubMed that suggests that when the liver is filtering out the alcohol it's busy and thus less effective at filtering estrogen from our bodies. I don't know how valid the study is or whether it's been replicated. Personally, I wasn't much of a drinker anyway, so I now have a drink rarely and it's not an issue. But if I have to give up chocolate....watch out. ;)
