Topic: Multiple Papillomas/Papillomatosis - Surgery??

Forum: Benign Breast Conditions —

A safe place to discuss benign (non-cancerous) breast conditions. Benign breast conditions are unusual growths or other changes in the breast tissue that are not cancer, though some may be associated with an increase in breast cancer risk. Benign breast conditions are quite common.

Really hoping to get some advice.

Back in 2014 I had surgery to remove both a solitary and multiple papillomas - all benign.

I recently had a contrast enhanced mammogram and ultrasound that found 3 suspicious lesions (6mm, 7mm and 12mm) so I had a stereotactic biopsy last week on 2 of the 3 masses.

I got the histopathology report today which says the larger mass was « papillomatosis and focal adenosis » and the other mass was « fibrocystic change with some microcalcification » All benign.

I’ve read a lot of the posts here that discuss the removal of benign single papillomas close to the nipple that may or may not be causing discharge.

My question is, should benign multiple papillomas (papillomatosis) in the peripheral position also be surgically removed?

In a brief telephone conversation today the surgeon said « all benign so just get some more screening done in another couple of years ».

Do you think I need to get a second opinion or does it sound feasible to wait and see? Should I have any concerns about the third lesion that wasn’t biopsied?

Really appreciate any advice.

I just don't know KEH.... I want to offer support.... If you're uncomfortable with or uncertain about the surgeon's recommendations of waiting I'd encourage you to seek that 2nd opinion. Honestly, with the suggestion of waiting two years I'd probably want a second opinion.... interesting no biopsy on the 3rd... something else to inquire about.

I can tell you that I had a papilloma that was not close to the nipple and it was recommended that we remove it. With that being said, it was done at the same time as the lumpectomy so we were going in anyway. I remember asking if we NEEDED to remove it. And I was told we did. Sooo......

At a very minimum I would have another discussion about this with your surgeon and understand WHY he or she feels it doesn't need to be removed. And I would also ask if you should biopsy the third lesion. Curious--what did the radiology report(s) say about that last lesion?

I had a WONDERFUL nurse navigator that helped me, too. Maybe you could touch base with her about these questions.

From where I sit today, I would want the papilloma removed and I would want to understand their impression of that last lesion. Circle back with us and let us know what they say! Good luck!

Thanks for your replies LivinLife and kathabus.

I have sought a second opinion from a well regarded breast specialist who I will meet with next week. She has already reviewed my reports and an MRI has been booked for Thursday which will be my first one. I now feel like I'm in very good hands which is a relief.

So glad be seeking a second opinion. I know I'll be able to trust her professional opinion on whether I need surgery, or not.

Thanks again
