If you're an oldie like me, you may remember the popular phrase from the 70's, "Today is the first day of the rest of your life." It's taken me years to really appreciate that statement and understand its value. I'm grateful that every day is a chance to start over and try our best as if it's the first day of our lives. The Lord provides us with a fresh start when we repent and try to do better, changing what we can and moving forward, away from past mistakes or heartaches. Here's a quote that caught my eye today:

Wishing all a very good "first day of your life!" ;)

"Unclaimed baggage at the airport: who does it belong to?"

I heard a wonderful talk last week at church with this question. The speaker said he's always been baffled when he sees lonely bags on the airport conveyor belts, going round and round, unclaimed.

The speaker then compared the idea that there are many "unclaimed blessings" for God's children--all of us. They are there, ready for us to claim, but we just haven't realized how wonderful they are and how much we need them.

--DAILY PRAYER = blessing of growing closer to God, getting to know Him and feeling his love for you

--DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY = blessing of finding answers to life's problems, feeling the Lord and His prophets and apostles speaking to you, personally

--FAST OFFERINGS (Google this if you aren't familiar with this term) = blessing of giving to those in need, which actually comes back to you in a much greater way.

--MINISTERING TO OTHERS = blessing of listening and serving with an open heart, growing to love those to whom we minister.

These are just a few the speaker mentioned. Then he asked: "What are some of your unclaimed blessings?"

Here's a timeless quote from one of Elder Maxwell's talks. (He passed away from cancer, years ago)

"The enlarging of the soul requires not only some remodeling, but some excavating. Hypocrisy, guile, and other imbedded traits do not go gladly or easily, but if we "endure it well" (Doctrine and Covenants 121:8), we will not grow testy while being tested.

Moreover, we find that sorrow can actually enlarge the mind and heart in order to "give place," expanded space for later joy.

Thus, enduring is one of the cardinal attributes; it simply cannot be developed without the laboratory time in this second estate (mortality). Even the best lectures about the theory of enduring are not enough. All the other cardinal virtues – love, patience, humility, mercy, purity, submissiveness, justice – they all require endurance for their full development. "— Elder Neal A. Maxwell, Ensign, May 1990, p. 34

My Lord and I                By Debbie

I walk each day in the light of God,

He leads me with His faithful rod.

We are friend in every way and I seem

to grow closer to Him everyday

                 My Lord and I

He is always close by and knows and

answers my every cry. And when I start

to fall, He lifts me up and makes me up

and makes me strong.

              My Lord and I

He reminds me to be strong and helps

me not to do wrong. So I will walk with

with Him each and every day, to teach

others God's beautiful way.

               My Lord and I

What God Is Like   By James Dillet Freeman

I did not know what God is like

Until a friendly word

Come to me in an hour of need--

And it was God I heard.

I did not know what God is like

Until I heard love's feet

On errands of God's mercy

Go up and down life's street.

I did not know what God is like

Until I felt a hand

Clasp mine and lift me when alone

I had no strength to stand.

I think I know what God is like,

For I have seen the face

Of God's son looking at me

from all the human race.

I write letters to my dear friend's son who is serving a long prison sentence. He's been humbled and relies on his faith in God, doing all he can to better himself, which is very good news. It gives me hope for him when he returns to society. This video reminds me of him, and of all of us as "prisoners" due to poor choices. But there is hope in Christ, and this sweet song in the video reminds me of the miracle of forgiveness and life, eternal, because of the birth, atonement and resurrection of the Savior of the world. This season is a wonderful time for rejoicing!

December is a time for the "Light the World" program in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but really meant to last all year--every day of every year. Finding ways to serve others and do as our Savior did is true religion. Enjoy this wonderful video that will make your heart swell with that innate desire to do good, even in the smallest of ways, for someone else.
