I'm feeling very overwhelmed. Receiving the diagnosis of breast cancer has been easier than figuring out what to do about it. I'm 35 years old and I after speaking with my doctors, I've decided to have a double mastectomy To treat the cancer in one breast and catch it before it starts in the other since they are already watching a spot in it. I live in Canada and things don't happen extremely quick here. I don't see the plastic surgeon for another week so I have been trying to figure this all out on my own. My breast surgeon saw me for a total of five minutes and gave me the option of cutting off half my breast, my whole breast, or both of my breasts. Felt like I had been run over by a train.

I'm trying to get a new surgeon who will spend more than five minutes with me and at least look me in the eye. Anyway, I have had an open removal of a fibroid the size of a football in my uterus which caused complications, so I recently had a laparoscopic hysterectomy.

Does anyone know ifHaving had a hysterectomy and And open procedure to take out huge fibroid (similar procedure to c section ) would remove me from being a candidate for the Diep flap? I REAALLY don't want them to take out my transverse abdominal muscles. I fractured my back years ago and already have a weak core.

I can always wait to ask the surgeon in 10 days but my curiosity is getting the better of me. Does anybody else know? I'm not a big fan of the thought of having to get implants

Thanks so much

I had a unilateral DIEP at 52 after having had two C-sections in my 30’s and an open hysterectomy in my early 40’s. An abdominal scan wasdone in advance by my plastic surgeon to evaluate the likelihood that the DIEP would be possible, and it was determined that I was a good candidate. I hope you are able to get the DIEP. I am very happy with my outcome.
