Even after 10  months dealing with DCIS and treatments I am still confused. I had a lumpectomy, radiation and a couple weeks ago an oophorectomy.  I have gotten conflicting info from my MO about whether I need to take tamoxiphen or not.  She first said if I had my ovaries out I would not need tamoxiphen. At the next check-up she said I needed to take it. I really am reluctant to take it.  Does anyone have experience with this or statistics?

My DCIS was 1.2 cm, grade 3, sentinel node was clear.

Thanks so much -

If your DCIS is ER+, taking tamoxifen theoretically reduces your chances of BC recurrance.  I don't know the actual percentage differences in recurrance rates w and w/out tamoxifan..but i think it is statistically signifant enough to cause BS/MO to recommend. That's what my BS told me.  Good luck!

Dang bcsucks! Seems like youve done a lot.....

I am thinking of passing on the hormones - but will wait to see what my path report shows.  After reading the risks and SEs...not sure it is worth it in my case.  Need to find more info, but thats how I am feeling about it right now.

I opted not to take tamoxifen after meeting with 2 oncologists. I was dx with DCIS ER+PR+ and I had a total hysterectomy with ovaries removed the same month as the MX. I am two years post and have had clear mammo on the native breast.

Keep going. Take a rest when you need it. Then get going again. Dx 3/27/2010, DCIS, Stage 0, Grade 3, ER+/PR+, HER2-

There's a Research News report about a study on Radiation, Tamoxifen After DCIS Surgery Reduces Recurrence Risk on the main Breastcancer.org site that has useful information.
