Just found out I have DCIS Grade 2, and I am so nervous.  Waiting to talk with surgeon about surgery options.  Please let me know your experiences and questions for the surgeon.  She did mention masectomy during our first visit.

Hi Notsure!  I am so sorry about your news.  Your diagnosis is exactly the one I received several years ago.  First of all, take a DEEP breath!  You can do this!  There are so many wonderful women here on this site with a wealth of experience to answer pretty much ANY question you might have.  I would say do LOTS of research here. Start on the DCIS thread as we are the women facing that particular diagnosis.  You will find women who wanted to keep their breast (s) and did excision surgeries and then there are the women (like me) who opted for mastectomies.  It is totally your decision and one you should weigh very carefully. It's been so long that I have forgotten what questions you should ask but believe me, there are plenty of women who are in the thick of this right now who will give you great advice!!!

Good luck with your decision!  Hugs, Anne

When I first head the news that I had DCIS and cancer grade 3, and met with the doctor, I told him take them off - both of them and wanted it out of my body as soon as possible, I had two trips I needed to make which pushed my surgery out. I did my research and decided on a lumpectomry and mammosite (1 week of intensive radiation).. and am very happy with my decision. Many suggest you really think on it but i didnt want to play with fire.. but a month gave me that time to become more rational. I am still in recovery - my surgery was June 15th.. and i dont expect to be myself until the end of July but for the most part, I went to work for a little bit here and there (the second week I was in radiation literally all day).. and the third week - working 7 hours a day and I am 60.,,.,

good luck, it is hard to hear that one has breast cancer. and it is something we have to live with but I decided that I could live with it better if i didnt have to see my breast missing,, and it is a much more difficult surgery and recovery,

i am going to start on hormone therapy.. next week.. i want to be really recovered before I start...

Hi notsure,

So sorry you have had to join our club but so glad you found us.  There is such a wealth of information and shared experience here.  I had your same diagnosis.  It is hardest in the beginning - it's overwhelming.  But when you meet with your surgeon you will start to learn more and the path becomes clearer.

I have found posts by Beesie invaluable.  I have bumped two of them for you.  Or, you can search (upper right corner) for posts by her in the DCIS category.  Two I liked are:  "Past post from Beesie on understanding DCIS" & "Radiation after Mastectomy and other misconceptions".  Don't let the titles scare you!

Hang in there and let us know how it goes for you.

Hi Not Sure

I was just dx DCIS grade 3.  My first visit to my BS was June 29 and I'm going for a Lumpectomy tomorrow July l6.  My breast surgeon made her recommendation but gave me the final choice.  Everyone is different and it is her job to educate you on what she knows already (limited at first) and her experience, so you choose the right choice for you.  She never mentioned mast on my first visit but I did see where she wrote in her report (I seen this at my doctors office) that it may be a possibility after all the pathology is done.  I figure why do more than be needed and she does too.  She will take the "generous lumpectomy" as she called it with a generous amount of breast tissue and she said they look for micro invasions in pathology.   Everyone has their own feelings and opinions on this but YOU have to choose what you think you can live with.  I don't know whether this will get it all as it is grade 3 and from what I've read the higher the grade the more risk for a more aggressive cancer that can become invasive.  I'm just new at this so I hope what I tell you is right, but I do agree that there are many gals here that can help us newbies.  I'm hoping what she can't get are just stray cancer cells with will be killed off with the Radiation she told me to expect.  If not I will have to deal with it.  We have no other choice, but the sharing and caring here helps.  Hope you feel better soon.
