My hair is coming back after chemo now. It used to be dark brown. Now it is a mixture of black and white -- no brown is visible. The hair on my head is about 1 1/2 inches long now. My pubic hair is black also. Is this normal? Why isn't my new hair brown, like my old hair? Will it go back to brown? Or should I give up on that? I'm 50 years old.
If I want my hair to be brown again, what type of hair dye should I use? Traditional women's hair dye provides a LOT of dye. I only need a little bit, since I have hardly any hair now. Should I try "Just for Men", because there might be less volume of dye?Log in to post a reply

My hair came back darker than before, too. It is now the color it was when I was a kid (really dark brown, almost black). I'm wondering if it is hormone-related. Once I hit puberty, my hair lightened, and now that I've been zapped by chemo and Arimidex, it is dark again.
I haven't colored it yet, BTW.

I have the same question though I have 2 more weeks of chemo so whatever I do will have to wait a little longer. I shaved my head when the fall out was way too messy but I have a good inch and a half growth on probably 2/3 of my head. I'm 53 and had dyed my grays for years before all this. Now the white has taken over and those darker ones are the slower growing. Wonder why that is?
Anyway, I was wondering about the natural hair coloring products I've seen. Somehow my brain says ouch when I think of putting my old hair color on what is my inevitably sensative scalp.
Would love to hear from those further out and what they used.

Mine came back in all gray, I dyed it auburn when it was about 1 inch long and then decided to just let it go gray and now I love it but it did take some getting use to. If I ever do decide to color again I would reverse frost with semi permanent color.

Mine came in black and white also and I've been blonde to light ask brown all of my life. That was 3 years ago and it's now has some light brown. I like the black better because it was so silver, now it's a bit muddier looking.

I'm 7 months out from chemo, and mine is growing sooooo slowly. It's thick, but slow growing! I was blond as a kid, darker as an adult, but it's coming in looking like a squirrel!!!! mixtures of tones of grey and black. And straight as a poker!!!!! I may just spike it up!

I actually liked it that way when it was real short - very classy looking but certainly made me look a lot older than I am. When it got a little longer I had my usual semi-wash-out coloring done. And, as usual I waited months and months to go back and have it re-done. I suddenly realized one day that, hey, my hair is a lot longer and those roots are brown(ish) again. I'd say that after a year or so, my hair was exactly the same as it was pre-chemo - brown with some gray. Still is 3 years out, just have to color it a little more often (I fiinally took the plunge and do the non-permanent at home. It lasts a good long time as well. Still playing with finding the right color.)
