Forum: Stage IV/Metastatic Breast Cancer ONLY —

Please respect that this forum is for members with stage IV/metastatic breast cancer only. There is a separate forum for caregivers and friends: Caring for Someone with Stage 4 or Mets.

Metastatic breast cancer (MBC; also called stage IV) is breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, most commonly the bones, liver, brain, or lungs. Metastatic breast cancer can be treated but not cured. Metastatic disease is NOT hopeless. There are a wide variety of treatment options for metastatic breast cancer, and new medicines are being tested every day. More and more people are living life to the fullest while being treated for metastatic breast cancer.

Note: Please contact your doctor for any specific concerns about symptoms you are experiencing or your course of treatment.

I honestly didn't think I would lie to my 40th. I was originally dx in Oct 2005-Stage IIIC-Trip Neg-5 CM tumor w/local mets to nodes in arm, neck, superclav, chest.
July 2007 car accidnt revealed bone, liver mets-suferred compression fracture in neck due to accident. Onc said liver mets showed slight ER+ so was put on Femara. Was taking Zometa for bones then had an exposed jaw bone so stopped due to ONJ.
Scans showed disease progressed so was put on Xeloda,Taxotere.
I started to get severe headaches a few months ago and brain MRI showed mets to brain in 3 spots. Onc switched chemo to CMF which I am still currently on.
I have been having headaches again and will have MRI Tues next wk.

My friends gave me a huge surprise b-day party on Sat and it was the best! They even flew my parents up from FL to surprise me. My sister and her family were already up visiting from FL so it was great to have them all together.

I was so surprised an happy to have made it to my 40th. I honestly thought with the first sign of mets that I would never make it. First 2 dx onc told me I would only to live to April! Goes to show you they just don't know!

I am not dying from cancer...I am living my life and enjoying every good moment to the fullest! I vacation and set goals that I want to achieve to keep me looking forward to the future. This truly helps me.

My next goal is to be at my son's wedding in Sept. I am sure I will make it...I have a strong will! Log in to post a reply

Happiest of Birthdays, catgirl! I know exactly how you feel. I turned 50 on Monday! While that might have been a hard one for some people, for me it was a blessing and reward. And the very next day I went on disability - so I figure I've just accomplished the great American dream - I get to "retire" at 50!

And even though I've got mets "too numerous to count" in my spleen and liver, and no chemo yet seems to be have any effect (Come on, Gemzar! Work!), I'm not dying. I'm living. Planning a 2-week vacation in Hawaii starting August 1st!

Applause for your strong will, Sister Friend! It serves you well! I know!

Hugs,
MomInMarin
