Hi, I am a month in after having a mastectomy with reconstruction on my left breast. I had a follow up exam with my plastic surgeon who did the implant yesterday and she suggested that I now start using a bio-oil or vitamin E on the scars. She was a little vague about it and I wondered if someone could kindly recommend something that worked well for them. I'm understandably nervous to apply something random on my body at this point, and not sure what my healthiest choice should be. I used to visit this site ten years ago when I had my original diagnosis of DCIS. It was so helpful to me then, and I was hoping to never need it again, but here I am ten years later facing a more aggressive cancer this time that left my milk duct and forced me to have a mastectomy. TRYING to be positive and strong. I start four rounds of chemo beginning this Tuesday. Thank you in advance for any suggestions you may have. ~Mobetta

I use Johnson's Baby Oil with Aloe nd Vitamin E. Put it on in the shower after my shower. I actually started using it all over for my winter, on top of chemo, dry skin. It works great!

I used coconut oil. There was one at the health food store in the skin lotion section with lavender in it that is amazing. I became really reactive to fragrances after surgery and even worst after chemo and the natural stuff worked the best for me.

Hi Mobetta, I've been using the brand name "Bio-oil" which is available at Costco. My sister recommended it to me - she used it following her hip replacement surgeries. Don't know if it is helping my Mx scars, but I figure it can't hurt. I was apprehensive about the scent as I am sensitive to many fragrances, but it is very light and easily tolerated. I apply it after showering when my skin is still damp and find that it absorbs quickly and does not stain clothing.

Sorry you find yourself back on this site; I too am on my second ride on the merry go round. All the best and hope the chemo goes well for you. xx

CASTOR OIL and KINESIO TAPE. You can also put various essential oils into the castor oil. Kiniesio tape was recommended to me by a plastic surgeon. You put it over the scar line and it helps the scar heal in a flat way, while also helping it fade. I didn't start using these until 4 months after my surgery. I had experimented with a few other things/oils but these were by far the most effective as well as simple, in terms of ingredients etc. Some scar products have biproducts of cow urine in them!

I haven't had recon, yet, but my BS has operated on me a number of times. She always recommends vaseline, of all things. I have used either that or Aquafor (recommended by my radiation onco), which are both incredibly cheap and seem to work reasonably well. For other surgical scars, I used various Palmer's products. I especially like Palmer's skin therapy oil for the shower. I think the best answer is to try a few and use what works. Nerdy
