Good morning from rainy New Mexico!
We are in week three of rain after a super dry year (including last winter) but now over our monsoonal season averages and may be heading for our yearly totals (about 11 inches annually) after we get through the last of these storms. It is not unusual to have late season moisture with the end of monsoon season and it can drag into October too, but having three weeks of a lot of rain is not something I have seen before. This week we have more monsoonal moisture but the left over hurricanes in the Pacific are heading in today (Polo) that will bring a lot more. After temps in the mid 90s or higher for months, today may not even break 60 degrees. That being said, I am SO HAPPY with all the moisture and my yard and potted plants are looking much better. Our annual balloon fiesta starts in a few more days and it should be cleared up by the weekend, but they are watching the field to be sure it doesn't flood.
Teka- I am glad you are better from everything girlfriend. That breakfast looks really yummy! I am going to work from home today and feel some chicken soup coming in my crockpot while I work from the house. I hope you are starting to see some changes in the foliage.
Miranda- my sister buys milkweed to support the catapillars and butterflies and loves watching the process. I do think it is one of natures most amazing things we can witness from worm, to crystalis to beautiful butterfly. It is late for them to be doing it and know they have to migrate south like the hummingbirds. I think the later are gone from here, have not seen any at the feeder lately.
NM- loved the pics of your mom and you out at the lobster place. I bet you both enjoyed some good eats and good times. Getting out for a ride, some fresh air and good food was good for everyone. Sorry to hear about the porcupine adventures, sounds painful for your dog and expensive for you. What was that old show called back in the day "that darned dog?" Good thing they are cute and you all love each other.

Mommy- it is cooling down here too. I will need to turn on the furnace probably in the next couple weeks. The outdoor houseplants that have been out this summer will be coming in too. I did a bit of Halloween decorating recently too and bought a fun jackolatern sweatshirt at Walmart last weekend. I love anything fall, pumpkin, etc.
Time to get to work and wishing everyone a good start to October!

Finished with my winter prep today. Was going to decorate for Halloween outside but we have might get rain tonight, so will hold off until the weekend. Property manager called today to say the furnace guy will be here some time tomorrow to service the furnace before the heating season really starts. We are getting temps in the 60s for highs here during day. So I ran amok in the house tidying house for tomorrow. Taking a break from the house cleaning and get some of my orange mango flavored water before I get on my next thing.
Carole, safe travels going home. Would like to get to meet you in the future.
Glad those of you affected by the nor'easter over the weekend are okay and those getting rotten weather elsewhere are okay.

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Thirsty Thursday! Happy October! We're waking up to lots of fog and dense fog advisories now that the warmer air is moving in after the rain the last few days. Visibility is really low around the house, which is unusual since I'm up on top of a hill. The really dense fog is usually a quarter mile up or down the road where it's lower. Annoying, but it usually doesn't last long after sunrise. The sunrises are definitely coming later, though. When I wake up there's the same amount of sunlight in the room, but the time on the clock is getting later. Wake up has moved from 5 ayem or shortly after to just a bit after 6 ayem over the last couple of months. Oh well, the time change coming up should fix that for a few weeks.
mOmmy--I'd love to see pics of your decorations!
Carole--I hope your trip out of MN is easy and safe. Nice to have a familiar favorite place to stop along the way.
Jazzy--Glad to hear the drought conditions are correcting for you. I bet the plants are very happy with all the rain. I hope the weather clear for the balloon festival, though. Mom and I had a really good time on that outing. Mom was born and spent most of her life on MDI and had lots and lots of memories at just about every place we went past. Some of the memories she told me were kind of garbled, a few I remember, too, most were from her teen and young adult years so Mom was pointing out lots and lots of changes. It was so nice that it was warm enough to have the car windows open most of the time. We both had very flyaway hair by the time I took her back to Birch Bay! Poor Colt was a bit of a hurting unit for a while. Given this is the second time he's picked up a porcupine like this I doubt he will learn to leave them alone. The good thing about it was the estimate was really high, so I got almost half of the up-front charge refunded. Still pricey, though. But it comes with the pupper owner/servant role.
Drought Breaker
Ingredients
• 1.25 oz (35 g) of Bundaberg rum
• orange juice
• lemonade
How to prepare
Combine all ingredients in a tall glass filled with ice.

Been so busy in the house the last few days with cleaning that my left foot that I had a bunion removed in '01 swelled up and screamed in protest every time I took a step last night. At one point I was in so much pain that I nearly screamed. At that point my hubby stepped in and put dinner away and made me go put my pjs on and rest my foot.

Jazzy, its small. Built probably for those who worked on the railroads. But its home for now. I scaled back a little on the display this year.

Hubby noticed I hadn't decorated a bush out back yet. We forgot about my bats I hang that the eyes glow in the dark. I also have witch hat garland. Might put yhose up with the bats and maybe a string of lights or two.

Good evening friends and happy October!
After three pretty rainy weekends, we now are having glorious fall weather. The storm this past week brought left overs from hurricane Nolo that came off the Pacific. North central New Mexico where I live did okay but northern NM where there have been bad fires (thus burn scars) and down south that got really heavy rains with all the storms are flooded. Southern New Mexico has a lot of agriculture (our green chili crop, grapes for the wineries, and pecan trees) and they are worried about all of it. Most of the green chili has been harvested but what remains for the red chili harvest could be lost and the pecan farmers think they may loose their harvest. Life in the all or nothing world of weather these days.
Balloon fiesta began this morning, and they had a successful mass ascension with hundreds of balloons. A few of the balloons get caught up in power lines (eek) which is a risk with flying in an urban area but no one hurt thankfully. They did the balloon glow tonight (tethered balloons where they fire up the envelopes and light up the balloons at night) also went off. Now that we have water in our river again (it literally dried up for three months), they can do the splash and dash where they travel down along the river and touch down on the water for a second. I will post a photo if I see a good one of that (or happen to see one down by the river in my travels around). Looks like we will have a good week weatherwise for the tourists.Things I don't like about this time of the year, all the extra traffic. Our population doubles in size this time of the year and the traffic is horrendous and so much construction here. I stayed over on the west side of the city today with my errands but am going to go to the arts and crafts festival tomorrow over near the balloon park midday after the crowds have left in the am and before the glow tomorrow night. Ive been to it before but not for awhile and wanted to go last year but didn't make it so tomorrow I am going for a few hours. Hope to get a few Xmas presents done as part of the visit. Maybe a little something for me too!
Hope everyone is having a good start to October and have your pumpkins and other fun decorations out. I have a bit more to do and do love this time of the year.

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Sunday Funday! We're waking up to a bright sunny ayem, with an outside temp of 38 whole degrees. Pretty chilly in the house, too, but not sure of the actual temp. But its warming up nicely in the sunshine. I went to visit Mom yesterday. One of the staff gave me a little booklet that turned out to be from Mom and Dad's wedding. It has quotes, the names and signatures of the officiant and witnesses, and the signatures of the quests present. It was found in Mom's last apartment, by the second person who moved into Mom's old apartment. The first person who moved in died apparently within days of moving in, since Mom has barely been in memory care for a whole month yet. Mom didn't want me to take it home with me, I didn't want to leave it where it could easily get lost or damaged, so I slipped into the document pocket under the seat of her rollator walker where I can tell her where it is but it is unlikely to be found by anyone else. If she doesn't ask about it for a while I'll slip it out and get it put in her safe deposit box.
mOmmy--that is a great looking Halloween set up! I did not know that bunion surgery could cause pain so long after it's done! I've heard the recovery is pretty intensely painful for weeks, was it for you? Have you had the pain come back before this? I've got bunions on both feet, have contemplated getting one corrected to make it easier to find shoes and boots that are comfortable, but since it doesn't hurt much now I'm not sure I want to go down that road. I don't like pain. My favorite Halloween decoration is anything with glowing eyes!
Teka--I am very grateful for the lady who stopped and offered to take that picture. Colt takes his role as protector of the yard very seriously. Given the health of the porcupine and skunk populations here, I expect that I will be dealing with the aftermath of encounters again in the future. Swimmer's ear isn't fun!
Jazzy--the weather certainly seems to be more of an element that it used to be, especially for agriculture. Losing an entire crop has got to be catastrophic in these days of single crop farming. I know it is here in Maine for the apple orchards and blueberry fields. The balloon fiesta sounds exciting to see. Glad no one got hurt getting hung up in the power lines. I bet the splash and dash is really entertaining to watch. I hear you about population surges around tourist influxes. The traffic alone is no fun at all. Enjoy the glow up!
House of Balloons
Ingredients
• 1 1/4 oz. vodka
• 3/4 oz. Aperol
• 3/4 oz. fresh grapefruit juice
• 1/4 oz. fresh lemon juice
• 1/4 oz. rich honey syrup (2:1)
• Chilled club sodaPreparation
Shake the first 5 ingredients with ice, then strain into a glass filled with fresh ice. Top with a splash of club soda, and garnish.From

The foot goes bonkers before bad weather hits or I've been on my feet too much. I have corrective insoles keep in my sneakers.When I had the left one operated on back in my mid 20s, I had to have two surgeries, the first one fixed the problem, but just after I got the last cast off from that surgery, the bones at the surgery site collapsed which prompted a second surgery to fix everything as the pins they used werent strong enough to hold it. I had to have screws and wires placed the second time and longer time with casts, was not fun.

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Hump Day! Waking up to some serious chilliness but not a frost or freeze despite the first freeze alert of the season for last night. I've got to admit I am tempted to turn the heat on for a few minutes, but will settle for a second cup of coffee curled up with the puppers under the afghan for a little while until the sun comes up a bit higher. Zoe's got a new trick--she watches until she sees me looking at her, then she shivers until I either give her a treat or cover her with the afghan! Imagine me falling for a dog made up of 3 kinds of husky pretending to be cold!
Jazzy--the balloons are amazing and so much fun to see! There was a time when ballooning was pretty popular around here. I'd see them in the mornings from the windows at work when I was on day shifts. I can't remember the last time I saw one locally.
mOmmy--It sounds like bunion surgery is a gift that keeps on giving. Not something I want to go through, I can deal with the level of pain the foot gives me now. Sounds like you have a lot of fun with the Halloween decorations.
Bat’s Brew
Ingredients
• 2 cups Bacardi Superior
• 4 cups ginger ale
• 1/2 cup blue curacao
• 1 cup cranberry juice
• splash of grenadine
Instructions
Combine all ingredients in a large punch bowl or drink dispenser filled with ice (or chill before serving). Stir well. Garnish with frozen blueberries or blackberries. Serve.From

The Balloon Fest seems like an awesome event. We were traveling in our rv close enough to attend one year, but had not made reservations in advance. The traffic was noticeably heavy.
We arrived home yesterday afternoon about 4:30 pm, our third day of travel. We had a scary happening in Memphis, in the midst of traffic. Our cargo trailer came unhitched from the truck. One safety chain broke, but the other managed to keep the trailer attached to the pickup. DH managed to pull over to the side. We got the trailer hitched onto the truck again. We got off on a nearby exit and found a home supply store where we bought new safety chain. We were apprehensive for the remainder of the drive.
Then on arrival, we found that part of the kitchen flooring had buckled. It's a Pergo product that we installed years ago. DH thinks that there must be a water leak with seepage that caused the problem. We have no clue about the source. The water supply into the house was turned off during the summer.
Meanwhile we'll unload the cargo trailer and get settled back into the house. DH has numerous medical appointments set up. He always hits the ground running, metaphorically, while I'm much slower.
Despite the challenges, it's good to be back home.

I'm enjoying a new (for me) brandy. St. Remy. It wasn't pricey and I find it smooth without the harshness of some lower price brandies. I also bought a bottle of Irish cream liqueur. DH had a little glass last night after dinner.

Started Christmas shopping last night. First gift I bought was for my aunt. I got her a book about a fire that happened here in 1977 that my daddy (her baby brother) had been apart of the effort to fight it. I hope she will love it.

Not in a very happy mood this morning. Have to break out my last set of pumpkin lawn stakes as one set stopped working suddenly. Checked batteries amd everything before turning them on, everything was good. Now they won't light up at all! Think either a critter did some kind of damage or a wire either broke or something burnt out inside the battery box! Bought them not long after we moved here, dagnabit!

Nope. I think someone has been messing with some of my decorations. Second set failed! And the battery cover to my spider that is motion activated I found under my front bush this afternoon.
Hubby has ordered me a early birthday present. He got me a copy of Alice Cooper's memoir today.
Watching the Brewers and Dodgers playing right now. Hoping that my Brewers win! It would give them a two game lead going into game three and if the Brewers do end up taking the NLCS, I will be praying for my Brewers!

Hard to believe anyone would mess with Halloween decorations. Or any decorations. I'm a Decoration Freeloader. I enjoy other people's decorating, but do none myself! LOL! I remember the year I put a big pumpkin by the front door and forgot it, since hardly anyone uses the front door. The pumpkin was not in good condition when I finally removed it. YUCK.

Good morning!
October is moving through quickly. The temps have dropped quickly again with lows in the 30s last night and it's our first freeze warning. I have to get in some of my houseplants that have been outside for the warmer weather now (about the right time) but have them covered for the moment. Still working on my change of seasons work for the house, yard, closets and indoor plants too.Good news for the week is that I paid off my new(er) car this week I bought end of 2024. Been on a mission to do that so I am more ready to retire. First step was getting myself a new car as I head into retirement, the other part was getting it paid of before I leave the full time work force, so I am debt free once again heading into retirement. Whoo hoo! You probably wonder what the retirement date is? Once I get going with my yoga teacher training next month, I will decide in the new year what the final exit strategy is. I am ready to go on all fronts (financially, mentally, emotionally, etc.) I will be certified to teach yoga by mid June 2027.
Got a vacation coming up to visit my sister on the west coast in a couple weeks the first week of November right as the time change comes. We don't plan to do as much this visit, most simple things with visiting, walks, and some restaurant visits too. We are both foodies.
I will be back again after my travels in Nov and wishing everyone a good Halloween!0 -
