First,
A belated THANK YOU to everyone for all the kind birthday wishes-Jackie- that cake is just AMAZING-and for those of you able to make it out with me to play Friday, I just had the best time. Working the hours I do, I so rarely get a chance to do anything like that-it was the highlight of my week. Have not tried the chocolate wine yet--- but will be doing so. My daughter caught sight of the Fanny May treats-and well, I've hidden the rest. Hee hee. Thanks also for all the FB notes and email-- it was just so nice and I was overwhelmed by everyone's kindness.
Okay-so I'm just going to throw this one out there because- as usual-it's the one place I can and not feel like an idiot. I have a younger brother I'm a bit estranged with right now. Long story-but he essentially walked out on his wife and kids for another woman, even involving his children in the affair (other woman is the mother of his daughter's best friend.) I'm very angry about the latter and won't go into detail, but for the kids' sake, we keep things above board for holidays and our kids' birthdays. So I get a birthday card from him today and am a bit shocked on a few fronts. It's a picture of two older large women with very obvious shaped tan lines hanging down to their knees-and the line inside the card is "I knew I should have taken my bra off in the tanning machine....." Okay-I have a sense of humor. A rather bawdy one actually, and if I had received this from a close girlfriend, might have guffawed...but One--- the kids signed the card ( 10 and 8!) and Two--- is this really a card you give to your sister who has breast cancer twice and a mastectomy last year? Seriously?!
Am I over-reacting? Knee jerk reaction- I want to email him and state what I just did above. But if I've learned anything in my advanced years (see birthday note above- SEE- sense of humor-ha- there it is), it's to wait until I've cooled down before going anything....
But can I say it here--- I am offended. What a dumb a**.
Okay- feel better now.0 -
Wow, Julie. I also have learned, at my way more advanced age, to at least sleep on it before replying to such an inappropriate correspondence or comment. I might just chalk it up to a section of male brain that sometimes seems to be missing. In this case, because this is your brother, and you have an interest in the children, I think I would say something. It's just my opinion, but I think I might let him know that the card , while probably well intentioned, could be hurtful to someone who has had breast cancer, and the kids seem young to be included in this kind of "humor." I agree that I would have laughed if I had received that card before bc, and from a girlfriend, not my brother. Now all my galpals would know not to send that card. All that said, my own clueless brother sent me a Maxine boob joke, but immediately emailed with an apology in case I was senstive. It was about a year after my tx, and he had forgotten about it until after he clicked on send. No kids involved though, and that part seems to me to be a teachable moment. He might need some help there.
Glad to have been at your birthday lunch, and waiting for a review on the wine!

Laura, thinking about you and your sister. Hope things are still improving today.

Like Smerf, I have learned to sleep on it and the scond thing I have learned is to call on the phone and not send an e-mail. A telephone call offers dialog while an email....well.....let's just say I have learned not to write emails when angry or hurt. Good luck with it.

Julie, based on what little you told me about your brother, I am just NOT surprized.. and somehow, I am not sure he even realizes it would be anything but funny.. So yeah, wait before you reply.. but knowing myself, I would reply. Smerf had some great suggestions..
Laura, I too am worrying and hoping your sister is doing better!! Please let us know..

Hey Susan, you are rigfht! Jungle Jewels is addicting! How I got that 71,000 score I'll never know. I've not been even close to it since! Still.........there's that urge to just keep trying!

Good morning everyone,
Had a thunderstorm through the night last night although I would not have known but had to get up and visit "the special room" a couple of times. I'm fortunate that noises usually don't bother me once I am asleep. At last -- yesterday, after 7 years we moved the last of our things out of storage. They had doubled the monthly storage fees from $20.00 to $40.00 and that just wasn't a good thing. Yes --- I've had many of the same thoughts --- I what ????? spent all that money on items that were un-used for 7 years....so how bad did I really need them. Since we don't have that much.....there is another auction barn up the road and we may check it out and do another ( it would be much smaller ) auction. Also would give me the chance to toss in a couple of the things that could have made it to the other auction if I had been able ( so much other work to keep up with ) to get it all together then.
One of my rare questions ???? I have been having some rather harsh quick pains to ( I would say my funny bone ) the tip of my elbow. I don't recall doing anything to it and just sort of think it may be the sweet old Arimidex. It is not a real problem. Just have to remember that should I decide to lean that way....I may get a jolt. I'm about ready to try the aspirin therapy and see if it changes anything.
My brother-in-law, Dave, the one who just lost his wife so recently, found out that he has lymphocytic leukemia. He won't have the test results for a few days which will spell out what he needs to do to address and treat for it. The Dr. seemed to indicate that it has been found early so he was quite hopeful that it would not take much to handle it. I hope the Dr. is right.
Well, I'm hoping you all have a good day and not too much humidity. I would say heat -- but it is not the heat that gets to me --- it is the humidity that is so often with it. I hope to check in later and see you all.
Hugs, Jackie

Hello Illinois Ladies - I have not met any of you yet but hope to be able to join the lunch group one day. I live downtown. I have recently finished chemo, will be starting radiation tomorrow (very nervous about this) and right after I am done will be taking Arimidex. I am concerned about all the side-effects I have been reading about, especially the bone issues. I have had osteopenia for a few years now and worry about what it will do to my bones, Why is this so hard?

Hello~ I hope everyones enjoying nice sunny day..
I missed the 9th lunch bunch.. you ladies look great~!
I had 2 appt. that day, PT and Retina doctor.. everything went well.. glad nothings wrong with my eye.. but I never thought I can get frackles in my eye..
BTW, we did go Taste of Chicago.... late afternoon on Saturday.. wow... I didn't want to get out of car... parking was expensive and food ticket was kinda expensive too.. and all that people... hot sticky day... yikes~!! good thing we brought the strollers for the kids but still it was hard to get around and we stayed for 2hours and got out... and my dh got upset tummy from the food we ate for few days... So, that was it... no more Taste of Chicago for us... Oh, well, dh wanted to try... so..
Char- radiation is a lot easier than chemo... it may be more tired but little nap will take care of that.. hang in there~!
Julie- Happy Belated Birthday~!!

Laura- my thoughts and prayers are with you and your sister...
My kids are up from nap and older son wants to play computer 'mommy, I want to play computer right now, you should be done by now' and he is only 4... man, we need to get a notebook for him... we can't even check our emails most of time.... here he comes again, gotta go~!~!~!!!
Have a great evening ldaides~!

Julie - Wow...that is somewhat bizarre...is he having a mid life crisis!? My older brother is a strange bird...we can choose our friends, but we can't choose our family!
Jackie - Could it be tennis elbow? I had it years ago...and it was very painful ended up having surgery on it. google - Lateral Epiconylitis. Maybe try an anti-inflam like Aleeve? Best wishes to you.
----------------------------------
Just hung up with my sis...she does not sound well. Her breathing is horrible! Tomorrow she is going to have several tests done, she could hardly talk, so I am unsure as to exactly what she will be getting done. Will have to wait and see and hopefully know more tomorrow. I didn't realize how awful and serious pulmonary emolis are. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers girls, I really apreciate it and so does my Mom and sis.
---------------------------------
Taught an art class today...lots of fun. Hope you are all having a nice evening.

Good morning everyone.
Had quite a day yesterday and more like it today --- along with the dreaded humidity. I really am ok with heat only --- but the humidity really wipes me out. Have to force myself most of the time to do what comes fairly easily most of the time. A few hours of outside work today as well which will not be pleasant. Ugg!!!!
Thanks Laura, I am going to google that as soon as I can. I had several cases of plain ole' tendinitis for the 9 years I worked at McDonalds. Goes to show not only is the work repetitive but with the amt. of customers we always had ( in the middle of s busy shopping center ) the work was fairly constant as well. In reality --- I really liked it. I do my best work early in the day and my day there started at 5 a.m. Also, every day went fairly fast since we were busy there.
Char -- good to hear your chemo is out of the way. That seems to be the one most people really dread. Doing rads is generally ( most people seem to report ) pretty boring. I think that is true. You are right though I think to be concerned about the osteo issues. I think it might come down to lots of personal research into pharmaceutical remedies, diet, and as well -- maybe trying to wait as long as possible -- like until your numbers change. I have been told I have osteopenia which actually seems common in cancer patients but since I was never tested until recently.....I have pretty much decided to wait until the next density test and see if it has changed. I will take something if I have too but I am not going to rush into it.
I hope you all have a really wonderful day.
Hugs, Jackie

Morning Girls....Looks like we will have a HUGE heat wave today. I love hot but not this hot. Hope everyone is staying cool.
Julie....Hope you had a wonderful bday dinner. The wedding was nice but left early too may little bugs out there. I agree with Smerf and Zap regarding your brother's card. A phone call is the better option to discuss this issue..Hope all works out well for you and him.
Laura...more art classes. I hope you are wearing that cute apron. lol How is your sister doing? Pulmonary embolism can be very dangerous, but with the right meds she should start to feel better. Keeping you and her in my thoughts and prayers. Is the goat ready for you to race?
Wendy...are you packed and ready to go??? You are going from one heat wave to the next. Hoping for lots of cool breezes for you on the beach. lol Don't forget to save my beach chair. lol
Jackie... how is your arm feeling. I hope you are resting it. If it is not better the 2 week rule applies and off to the md for you for a ck. Are your kitties still with you?
Rita...how fun to spend a whole week with your grandson. Life through a child's eyes priceless.
Elf...the Taste of Chicago was not so fun for you. Sorry to hear that dh got sick. Back to train rides for you and the kids.
Smerf....how are the wedding plans coming? Almost here for you. I love to watch the show Say Yes to the Dress! One day I will be there too. But not to soon. lol
Zap...how is your back doing? Hope you are feeling better. Have you been up north. There are lots of art / craft fairs going on in the next few weeks. Happy looking.
Char...hope you are feeling better. Rads are a a breeze compared to chemo. With rads you can get tired. I used lots of cream on my chest to help with the redness. Hope to meet you some day at our lunch.
Makmak..how is the nanny hunt going? Did you fine a special one yet. How are you feeling?
Well I gotta run..off to a md appt. I have to get them all in before school starts which is almost here for me. sniff sniff..I hope you all have a wonderful day.
Remember to be healthy...be happy...enjoy life. Hugs to all.

Good morning,
Well, we wanted summer, and we've got it! A little too warm for me, but I'm happy I'm here to endure it.
Welcome, Char. That's a good question, and I wish I knew the answer. It is soo hard, but we do get through it, and come out on the other side. Glad you found us, and look forward to you joining us at lunch/dinner one day.
Jackie, I too had "tennis elbow" a few years ago. DH dx me, and I don't play tennis. It turned out to be the vacuum cleaner I was usung. Had to get a new self propelled model, and that did the trick. It can take a long time for it to subside, though, and you need to stop repeating the motion that is causing it. For tennis players, like my DH, some lessons in his grip of the racket helped. My vacuum cleaner grip was much less exciting.
Remember that osteopenia, and osteoporosis are very common as we approach and enter into menopause. Not everything is because of cancer, though the Arimidex and such can make it worse. And serum calcium levels do not measure bone health. That said, I believe that I would be sure to take calcium and VitD, and do daily weight bearing exercises, limit caffeine and alcohol, and wait for my next DEXA scan like you are doing.
Laura, I'm hoping your sister will show some improvement soon. Maybe they are doing lung scan? Let us know, and we are thinking of you and your family during this tough time. Glad you are enjoying your teaching time with the kids.
Elf, my kids are all grown, but when they visit, I can hardly get on the computer! Lately they have started bringing their laptops, so it's a little better, but kids stay kids forever in some ways.
Have much to get done, so best get started. Wish I was on the beach with Wendy!
Have a great day.

Good morning! Had to take a sleeping pill last night...and now this morning I feel somewhat groggy. I HATE not waking up bright eyed and bushy tailed. : )
Talked to my Mom last night. More concerned than originally. Sis is fairly "out of it" so it's difficult to get valid info. Mom can't always be there when the Dr makes his rounds. But supposedly, this morning she's having a bronchoscopy, a brain MRI and possibly others. They think she may have had a stroke. Wow...I'm blown away. She had other tests done yesterday too, but we're unsure of exactly what. Mom is going to wait until tomorrow and then call her Dr - hopefully by then he will have some results to report. I have feared all this would happen, just always hoped I would be wrong.
I hope you all have a nice day. Those in treatment...my thoughts are with you.

Laura, so sorry to hear all this. Hoping for some better news after the tests.

Laura, hoping for some good news today!!
Today is Wed.. and I'm nervous as usual before the bloodwork for my tx.. hopefully will go well and I'll be one tx close to some good results..
My MIL had to have a thyroid scan as they found something.. results today or tomorrow.. so more to worry about...
Had a few calls about Nannies, but no interviews yet.. but since I'm home with the nanny, at least I can tell pretty quickly if I will like her or not.. I have until the 1st, so hopefully will work out.. if not, my parents will have to help me until I find one..
Oh.. I bought and already tested the Shape-ups.. they feel pretty good.. just trying not to go crazy and over-do it right away.. so will put them on again tomorrow.. hey I do so much walking that I may as well get nice legs out of it..
My daughter just txted that she landed in Nashville.. for the Future Business Leaders of America National Business Math competition..
Hope everyone stays cool on this day.. I'm off to get ready for the tx.. talk to everyone later..

I'm so sorry I missed the lunch bunch and most of all, Julie's Birthday! Happy Belated, Julie. The card from your brother sounds like he was simply thoughtless. He probably thought it was a riot and that you'd appreciate it. I think you are totally justified, and would feel better, if you gave him a bit of a "wth? phone call.
I missed the lunch because we went to Ocean City, Maryland to visit my daughter who is working there for the summer. What a nice boardwalk beach town it is, great for a getaway on the ocean. My daughter is doing great out there so far, growing up and everything!
Going to an ortho spine specialist tomorrow morning about my neck. I got my MRI results on CD for him to review and give me his opinion on. The pain is just ridiculous sometimes, and I need to do something (short of surgery). I really suspect that just as the Femara makes my other joints hurt, perhaps it's also a factor in this sudden pain. ???? We'll see what he says tomorrow.
Wendy - I did the Zometa infusion because my onc recommended it for me, and for the most part, I trust his opinion. I was not osteoporotic, but I was only a .1 away. My dexa number had dropped significantly from the previous year (thankyouFemara). He has me doing it every 6 months making my next dose due in October. After that one, I will wait whatever time frame he recommends and do another dexa to see if it's made any difference. I do not plan on staying on this any longer than is necessary. There are both pros and cons out there in research land and while I want to be proactive about my bone loss, I also don't want to do more than is necessary. I found a very interesting pro/con discussion on this other forum - read the long entry by Groovygirlcool. She cites some interesting studies: http://www.inspire.com/groups/advanced-breast-cancer/discussion/no-more-zometa-for-me/
Smerf - Congrats on your daughter's engagement! I remember you telling us about her boyfriend in So. Africa. How exciting for all of you.
Laura - I am so sorry to hear about your sister. Holding her in my thoughts and wishing her an easy recovery soon!
Welcome to the new ladies! Pick a comfy seat, order a drink and enjoy the company.

Do you remember when it was so cold? I went to Chicago for a matinee today at the Goodman Theater and man was it hot! There was a Thai Festival at Daley Center and these little girls were performing Thai dances. They had to throw water on the stage to keep their little feet from not burning. It was so hot!
To those in wigs...stay in air or ditch the wig. It has to be miserable to be in a wig in this weather.
Wendy, I am like Rene 23. If my doctor said to take the bone meds, I would, only because I think he knows so much more about it than I do. I realize that this is perhaps bad thinking on my part , but it has just been my way. You have time, so now worries.
Stay cool!

Wendy,
My onc told me that although she ordered Zometa for my bone mets, it has proven to help prevent mets of the organs as well.
I took Zometa every month for a little over 3 yrs and now take it every other month. At some point I will go down to every 3 months. I have no side effects from it and my old health ins paid it with no fuss and now medicare and my supplement pay for it with no fuss. I had a tumor the size of a large marshmallow on my 5th lumbar. After 9 months of taking Aromasin and Zometa, it was no longer visible. I had a kyphoplasty (fill voids with bone cement) last fall and my bone doc told me that my treatments are working and there is no sign of cancer. He also said that even though I had some voids in the bone, the outer area of the bone was so hard he had to hammer to get thru it. He said zometa was doing a good job. I am still on it for prevention.
