Susan I loved that quote and Susan......you will always be a teacher. It just won't br formalized and won't come with a paycheck. You won't easily see and feel it like you do in a classroom setting, but it is reverence, life and joy to you. When you are giving out information in any way -- you are teaching. Even in your book club. When you can inspire others ( and I know you do this as you do it long distance for me ) you are teaching -- creating a desire to know something, or to read something, or to do something different. You did not lose your identity when you retired -- you just present it in a slightly different way.
Lago.....the cookies, oh the cookies. I put that page in my favorites. I'm going to try not to go there too soon.
Will be 70 here today. How I love these days so suggestive of the Spring that should soon be arriving. The ice and the bitter cold which seemed so consistent this year has stirred true longing for it all to be done.
Hope you all have a fantastic Sunday. I'll be waving back today Rita.
Hugs, Jackie
om my gosh!!!
Just saw that you posted at the same time Laura......what a difference in weather, huh !!! They did say we could get a shower...but theysaid that yesterday and we didn't. May be too far South.

Jackie - I sent last week's warm weather down to you. lol

Morning! 70 by Jackie???? We have 39 and pouring rain. Yuck..Let's all go to Jackie's for lunch!
Rita....welcome back! Bet you wish you were back at the beach....
BJ:.....having fun???? Cabana boys?????
Susan....now don't laugh...SuperTarget carries in their bakery section, Blueberry Scones. They are soooooo good! Probably not true English scones but they sure are good. In fact the bakery section at Supertarget is excellent! Love their artisinal breads. Yum! And I agree with Jackie....you will always be a teacher.
Not much new around here....but then, quiet is good. I finally got the taxes all done....just need to run out to OfficeMax and copy the whole bunch and then ship them off to the accountant. Always glad when that mess is done with....have no idea what the outcome will be but I am hoping to break even. Don't know what we will do today as all the map is showing is rain all day, and an icy rain at that. Who the heck wants to go out in this????? I'm thinking a pot of homemade soup is an excellent idea....and then reading/old movie.
Hope you all are doing well....and the cancer beast takes Sunday off with all the se's!

Wendy I am going to Target for scones! Great idea! Crumpets are actually tasteless so the theme will not suffer if I do not have them. Wendy, you would love this book (Maizie Dobbs). I am feeling so much more relaxed right now. It is raining and no place, other then Target, to go! Happy and content. Wishing the same to you!
Edited to add, I realized my daughter sent that quote BACK to me to inspire me. It came from Jackie and I sent it to the daughters and she saw a teachable moment to get it back into my yard again. Talk about recycling words of wisdom! Isn't that wonderful?

Susan - I am so glad to not have to schedule our family trips during spring break anymore. What a hassle that always was. If I didn't book something by Oct/Nov. the rates were always so high. We ended up just booking our cruise and driving down several times because I didn't want to pay prime airfare rates for 4 people. In hindsight, we had some good times during those family road trips.
It's nice to have more flexibility in dates now that the kids are older.
Maizie Dobbs? I'm always writing down the names of new books to check out. Whenever a patient comes in carrying a book I ask her what she's reading and I note it in my phone where I keep a list. Right now I'm reading "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand. It's a non-fiction biography and to be honest, I don't love her writing style. The story itself is fascinating though, so it's well worth the read.
I just finished "Water for Elephants," and really enjoyed it.
Jackie - Enjoy those 70 degree temps today. Wave hi to them for us here in the north and tell them we miss them terribly!
I should go work out today. My friend and I signed up for Cardinal Fitness, and I quit Lifetime. Cardinal is a lot cheaper so I don't feel as much guilt when I blow it off... like I'll probably do today.

Rene, I loved Water for Elephants!
I also gave you the wrong spelling. That would be Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear. I am ready for my lady reading people tomorrow. I have the day off so it is scones, tea, English Muffins and lemon curd and book talk. Never had lemon curd before. Have any of you? Wendy, I discovered that Target sells Madeleine's too. DH was shocked that Target sold food. My store did not have the bread you mentioned. Great marketing strategy (food, clothes, drugs, books and electronics).
Rene, what sort of nursing do you do? I think you are with a doctor. I would love to hear what you do.
Susan

Susan - I'm not a nurse, I do OB/Gyne ultrasound for an MD group. I've been a sonographer for 26 years now, and I was an x-ray tech before that.

Doing my little drive by, trying to catch up but it never happens. Sounds like everyone is getting along pretty well. The warmer weather seems to bring a smile to everyone's face. I know I welcome it. Bring on Spring! Just a little bit of cold again before we get there.
Back to treatment again tomorrow. I hate my routine but it seems to be working. My tumor marker was done over 200 points last month. Good progress finally! Amazingly enough, treatment went well last week after being off on vacation. Hopefully as the cancer shrinks it so will the side effects. The things I live with are annoying at best so I can't complain.
Yesterday I went shopping with Chris at Bergners. It was the first time I have been to the mall since before Christmas. We had just gone upstairs and were walking into the men's department when I felt a touch on my shoulder. I turned around and another BC angel was there with me. It was a great experience. She saw me in my ball cap and wanted to stop to encourage me. She just got back into remission in November (stage 4), I loved and needed the encouragement and HOPE! It was nice to hear of one remission in a sea of losses that have happened over the last month.

Hi Wendy. So good to hear from you. It really does sound like the chemo is producing good results for you. Like you, everything crossed that your se's get a lot milder. Glad you saw your friend. Sounds like a good sign to me. I tend to see good things in what seems like special encounters. Sorry though that the last month has been hard. Wonderful to be having a taste of Spring. Was 70 here today. Loving it and needing it.
Hugs, Jackie

What a great story, WendyTY. You were truly touched by an angel. I believe it all to be more than coincidence.

WendyTY - Glad you're feeling pretty well. Your angel story was great. Hugs to both of you!

Jackie, I especially liked your quote today. I struggle with forgiveness everyday. Easier said than done.

Navy -- thanks. I'm struggling sometimes too and I'm not sure why. Impatience is part of it I think. I think it also may be part getting farther away from diagnosis and tx. I am thrilled to be where I am --- maybe it is because the gift of life was returned to me......and now when I think I am seeing a lot of unappreciative type behaviors it bothers me. I have learned the art deeper and a lot stronger of gratitude.
Just some random thoughts here but even though there were a lot of President's Day quotes as this is President's Day, this one is the one that said.....please use me. It is always gratifying to me when these quotes say a lot to someone else. Thanks,
Jackie

I had the day off and had ny book club. The scones were so good and I also served English Muffins with Lemon Curd. Have you ever had it. YUMMY! I feel so content as the house is clean, it's warm and cozy and I am ready for tomorrow!
I do not have much trouble forgiving other people but I sure have a hard time forgiving myself when I make a stupid remark. I can remember stupid things I said or did 30 years ago. The quote certainly helps at least understand that.
Guess what, Rene? You were kinda at the book club today in that our next book is Water for Elephants. A movie is due out, so look for it. I thought it was coming out first part of February, but I sure haven't seen it. Look up the trailer on the internet. It looks amazing. I have read the book but it is one of those books you can read and reread. Another favorite of mine is the Samuarai's Garden. Jackie, you would love this story too. A rather privileged Chinese kid is recuperating from TB and is sent to a place where people with leprosy have retreated. I know that sounds awful, but he gains such wisdom through the lessons he learns as he goes in search for the Samurai's garden.
Have a good day!

Hi gals!
Wow! I went from sunshine to utter gloom but it is good to be back home.
We went by your turn-off about 6:30 last night Jackie, and it took about 2 hours and 15 minutes to get from there to my house on I-57 to I-74W. I think it's a little closer going straight up through Vandalia and Pana but we were tired of driving and wanted the ease of the Interstates. I did wave as we breezed by!
WendyTY.....I'm so glad that breast cancer angel stopped you. See.....there is such a thing as remission with stage 4 and you are on your way there! Soon you'll be offering the same kind of hope and inspiration to somebody else! Hang in there, gal.
Susan, I hope you're enjoying your day off today. I transitioned a bit more slowly that you from the "official teacher role" to a retired teacher. At first I had my question business to work and then I worked with the youth groups at church and I worked as a moderator for the scholastic bowl program. I'm still volunteering to read questions at one of the local schools here in town for after school matches. It's really hard for good teachers to just walk away because it's truly in our blood. Those teachers who didn't really love the classroom had no trouble walking away. I also keep up with several of my former students on Facebook and that is so much fun! Also, Susan, I need to know your secret to scoring over 100,000 points on Jungle Jewels! I'm jealous!!!!!
I hope everyone is having a good day! I'm off to do another load of laundry and to put together a meatloaf for dinner. Dave offered to take me out for Valentine's Day but I've eaten out so much the past three weeks that I think a good home-cooked meal sounds better and I'm sure he won't complain.
Take care everyone!
Rita

The first three books I read (outside of school-Catcher in the Rye, etc.) was LADY by Thomas Tryon. The next book was Helter Skelter. WOW, what a contrast! lol Then, The Other Side of Midnight. lol I loved the first and the third, but the 2nd...OMG, scared the heck out of me! lol

Oh Rita, I had to come back. I didn't score that! I was playing the game and it went beserk. I mean it actually got all squirelly on me and was zipping and zapping and then told me I hit the jackpot when in fact I hit no such thing. A lot of shady sounding people have contacted me to see how I did it. Of course no machine would ever do this in LasVegas (or would it? maybe I have a GIFT
! DH worries about me in Vegas as, unlike him, I love to gamble. I once gambled with a real gambler on what color gumball would come out and I won $50.00! 0 -
O.K. Susan, I'm crushed! I was just sure you had the magic secret to Jungle Jewels and I am so hooked on that game! I'm also still laughing about you betting on the gumball color! What a riot! If you love to gamble, you're going to love Vegas.....and yes, sometimes those Vegas machines do really funny things and you end up a real winner! Wouldn't that be great????

Hi all. 5 of 28 rads done. Looking forward to spring. No hair yet, 7 weeks out...
0 -
Adey.... good going so far with the rads. You are probably already getting tired of that daily chore. Just wait til you reach the half way point and start celebrating! I had four 10-second zaps each time and counted every red light flash on the wall and followed it up each day with a 30 minute walk around the hospital track. I found that it helped to develop some sort of routine... however mundane it seems.
Susan... I kept trying to find time to send you my friends easy recipe for cranberry scones. Sounds like you found a good option though. I will look for them at Target.
Sounds like yucky weather coming again. Our driveway is an ice skating rink, but the roads are pretty well salted down. So glad to be working from home in weather like this. Hope everyone stays safe on the roads out there.

5 rads down! Adey that's great. BTW are you sure no hair? It can be hard to see at first. Very light and thin. I will admit I've started back on biotin and women's rogaine. I think it does make a difference because my head is the only place I see hair growing. (OK did have that albino chia mustached but that has been removed!).
Susan sounds like a wonderful day. Lemon curd. Sounds lovely.
Rita we had a dusting here in the city
Wendy glad to hear chemo is doing the right thing!
Joan, be careful. You don't want to slip on that driveway. Things iced over the day I had my last chemo. I got out of the cab and landed on my butt! As you can see I more than survived but I was lucky that I slid a little so the impact wasn't as bad.
{{{waves to everyone else}}}
My toe nail has been removed so I should be a bit more mobile once things heal a bit. She shot it up with so much lydercane I still can't feel it. I was walking around doing errands in the hood for the past 2.5 hours without a problem.

CongRADS, Adey!
Before you know it, you'll be a RAD GRAD! 0 -
Zap - Lemon curd is wonderful. My husband makes his own. It is great on scones, toast, etc. but he says it is best just on a spoon. Losing weight is hard when you are married to someone who loves to bake and sells homemade bread and bagels. The house always smells like something baking. I need to lose weight. My knee replacement will have been 3 months ago in 2 weeks. Wednesday is my last day of therapy. It still hurts, but probably it is just muscles sore from doing things I have not done in ages. I ride the exercise bike for 10 minutes at a time and am adding another minute each day. I have another 6 or 7 more exercises to do each day. She said the actual surgery was completely healed and now it is just a matter of strengthening the muscles back up. They were not used very much for a long time so are weak. I can see improvement since I started with the outpatient therapy. Wednesday will be #15 which is what ins. would pay for.So it really has only been 6 weeks. I must say I am tired of the leg hurting, so will be glad when I can get around without thinking about the knee. I have to move the car seat back all the way to be able to just get in and out of the car. It seems minor and really is, but husband does not always remember to leave it that way or park so that the door can be opened all the way. It will be nice when we don't have to stop and think about that stuff. Everyone tells me that 3 more months and I will be glad I had it done. I am looking forward to getting to that point.
I have to see the surgeon who did my thyroid biopsy during my cancer treatment. I have an ultrasound tomorrow. They want to make sure nothing has changed on my thyroid. The blood tests all came back OK. I think if there has been no change they will tell me I don't have to come back. The biopsy just found a blood filled cyst. If no change this time, they will be sure there is nothing to worry about. I guess it will be nice to know for sure. Next Onc appt not till first week of April.
All of you still in treatment are in our prayers. Hugs to all. Annette

Morning Girls...Just a quick drive by Hi to all. Looks like all have been doing well with txs. I just got back last night from my girls trip to Las Vegas. Had a flight delay so had to stay longer at the the hotel. Just my luck to have stayed longer while waiting for my flight and won big. It was a great trip but now I need a vacation just to relax. lol I do think an Illinois girls trip would be sooo much fun. I am already planning to go back this summer.
Rita..glad to see that you had a wonderful time in Florida. Back to this gloomy weather yuck. I am so ready for spring...Las Vegas was great, the weather very cold but sunny. No pool or beach chair for me.sniff.
Susan...yes you would love Las Vegas and you can come with me. The slots were very good to me this trip. How is your teaching stint coming along. Spring break is all most here. Then you can play.
Wendy...got the cutest pair of bling sandals. My sister picked them out and OMG I love them. I need to go back and get the purse to match.lol
Laura...glad to see that you had lunch with the girls. How fun. Hope all is well.
Joan...yes do be careful out there. Last night Rt 53 was closed due to black ice. So many car accidents on the road it was scary trying to get home.
Jackie..hope you are doing well..thanks for the great quotes. I so enjoy them.
To all I missed hope you all are doing well in your treatments. Gotta scoot as I have to work today. Kids will be goofy from being off one day. Aaahhh looking forward to summer break.
Have a wonderful day everyone. Think spring, flowers and sun!!!
Hugs to all.

Gotta jump in the shower...brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...heading out this morning to photograph 130 pre-schoolers...will be using LOTS of hand sanitizer! LOL
Be safe if driving this morning...I am NOT looking forward to my commute.

YEAH Adey!!!! Keep up the great work!!!
Navy..I feel the same way with ungrateful people. See so much in the classroom too when I teach. I know we have seen the part of life that changes you forever and as a result, I personally have changed in the way I interact with friends, strangers, whatever.Deeper sense of knowing what I want and with whom!
Be safe driving all!!!!
Hugs,
Donna

Nana -- people are probably right. Once you get to the point of not being totally conscious of the knee you'll be happy that you "fixed" it --- like getting through chemo. A real test of endurance but worth it so much down the road.
Hate hearing about black ice and other winter mixes to the North. We still have some winter to go, but I am definitely appreciating the last few days. On the chilly side today from yesterdays' rain, but not bad. We really are trying for the start of some spring-like weather which is not a moment too soon for me.
I brought a little black kitten home with me last night. We are trying hard not to take ANY. The first batch of babies will be born soon and we are so full of cats at the Shelter. About 70 right now. This person brought two kittens in....they had been transported in a big, very dirty dog sized crate in the back of a truck in the blowing rain. Cold and scared. A person looking for a kitten ( the ones we have now are already about 5 months old ( last of the season from last yr. ) and came out of the kitten room......saw the gray and white wet kitten and expressed a desire to take it. I was all for it and am hoping that they will give it the life it deserves. In the meantime, I just could not let that little mite ride back in that crate in the rain to these peoples' farm. The only answer to that is that it come home with me -- just what I didn't need.......I have four getting well at the Shelter that will come home with me very soon. When will I learn -- the animal kingdom is not mine to save. Hopefully.....I have learn because I have no room at my inn now.
Hugs, Jackie
