Illinois ladies facing bc

So happy for you, Julie. I wish it could just be resolved forever.
Went to a play tonight with a woman who was just diagnosed with BC and then within one week of her own dx, her 48-year old daughter was diagnosed. I work with her other daughter. I have mentioned them before. Mom had a lumpectomy but daughter will have the double mastectomy. We do not know about chemo or rads for the daughter, but mum is getting off on the chemo. Of course, she cares only about the daughter at ths point and would trade anything to take on the harder scenario. I am happy to say we had a lovely dinner and the play was great. I generally do not do things during the week when i world and know I will be tired tomorrow. Another good reason to revisit retirement fr good as I had so much fun with them. This woman did have some information on artificial sugared foods and cancer. I have no idea what it all means but I was a diet pop junkie for many years. It was my caffeine pop at lunch as I do not drink coffee during the day. Since returning to work, I am back to my diet pop. May have to rethink that. Has anyone heard of a connection between artificial sugar and breast cancer. I suppose there is a theory surrounding every thing...so moderation...but is one diet pop daily for twenty years moderation? Just "food" for thought.
Joan, I will be thinking about you.
Have a good day tomorrow!

Julie & Laura, back in 2009 when they were setting up my rads they found lung nodules in my Cat scan. Ins would not pay for a pet scan, so doc did a bronchoscopy, no cancer cells, and we did 2 follow up cat scans 6 months apart. All OK. But I did find out that there are several things that can cause lung nodules which include valley fever if you grew up in Arizona like I did. If you have been exposed to silica sand and several other things which totally do not have anything to do with cancer. If nothing seems to be changing then they are probably encapsulated and won't ever change. Try not to worry and let them check as often as they feel they need to. Hugs Annette

Hi Everyone!
I'm up late again. Just a quick note to Lisa don't forget that raisins are really high in iron to raise your RBC. I hope you're feeling better soon.
Zap too bad we don't live closer I'm accepting the delivery of $140.00 worth of corned beef tomorrow and 2 of the girls I ordered for are OUT OF TOWN. LOL I might be having one big party on Saturday. I have a recipe to bake it with spicy mustard and brown sugar that I tried last year and it was delicious.

Zap prior to chemo I had at least one diet Dr.Pepper every morning since I was 21. I don't drink coffee. What I have read is colas (dark sodas) are really bad for your bones. Since chemo I have had 3 cans of soda. Maybe that contributed to my osteopenia. 1 can a day may not be bad but just something to think about. As you can see it's now a treat for me.
Here's just one article but there are many more: link
The only link to breast cancer and diet it sodas that I have read is something about drinking it makes you crave sweets more. If you start eating sweet stuff, or more food then you will gain weight. We already know that extra weight isn't good.
Happy St. Patrick's day. Not sure if I posted this yet. Origin of Irish Dance

I was never much of a pop drinker - including diet colas - maybe one can in a month tops. And yet I was diagnosed with osteopenia about five years ago. Went on Actonel for about three years. Bone density done last summer after I finished chemo showed no signs of it. But in addition to the Actonel, I have been very diligent in taking a calcium and vitamin D supplement. So I think it is many different factors that contribute and probably dependent on individual.

When you are sorrowful, look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.

I have used the above quote before but when I see them again and they still speak so loud, I like to put them in again.
I try not to drink much for soda, but when I do....I usually get Diet Rite Zero I think it is. No caffeine, calories or salt. I drink coffee ( black -- no sugar ) so don't need the caffeine boost. In the class I am taking -- naturally we are not there yet, they are going to talk about artificial sweeteners soon. The only thing they did say so far is that there are some really awful chemicals in diet soda.....like arsenic maybe??? they haven't revealed that totally either ( the nutritionist is coming soon to let us in on all of that ) but Lago they did say that the artificial sugars tend to give you cravings for other sweets. They also said it takes 21 days to break an addiction......to salt, sugar, sodas -- whatever it might be. I'm sure this is true as it is how I originally gave up salt and sugar a few years ago.
I think you can get a world of good information about food if you go to www.calorieking.com. At least I am hoping that is the right one. I am learning a lot about how bad I have actually been while I thought I was being rather good.
Hope the sun is shining for all of you.
Hugs, Jackie

I will confess to drinking probably 4 cans of Diet soda a day for a few years. When I quit, I was finally able to lose 25 pounds. Then a couple years after that, I got my DX. I have always wondered if there was a correlation between my diet soda drinking and my DX. I haven't had another since. I had some other contributing factors though, but I am sure it didn't help.

I was told by my chiropractor/naturalist that it's the Aspartame in the diet colas that are really bad for us. He told me that Aspartame is worse for us than regular sugar and has been considered a carcinogen by many prominent doctors. It is amazing the number of processed foods and drinks that contain this ingredient. I started to make the sugar free jellos, thinking that I was reducing my sugar intake. I was reducing the sugar intake but increasing my Aspartame intake, so I went back to the original jellos. I will be interested in hearing what you learn about these sweeteners in your class, Jackie. Please share that info when you get to that part of the class.
Today is a laid-back day for me. I have to run into town and pick up my taxes and need to pick up a few more birthday gifts for my "soon to be two-year old" grandson, but that will be a fun task. Other than that, I'm fixing a healthy meal for dinner and just enjoying a peaceful day with no commitments or obligations. I'm also going to get out and walk this afternoon. I can't put that off any longer and the sun is out and beckoning. I admire those of you who are commited to a firm exercise program and have the initiative to stay with it!
I'm off to enjoy the day! I hope everyone has a great Wednesday!

I'll be anxious to hear what is said about Splenda and feel it won't be any better than Aspartame. I already know I can't have anything with Aspartame. I tried soda sweetened with it and after about an hr. would be able to "feel" starting at the back of my throat and going all the way down a sensation of ??? tightness and like there was some sort of coating. Then I would have stomach cramps for a few hours. After a couple of times I realized it was only happening when I tried to drink diet pop.
It hasn't happened with Splenda or WheyLow which I also used.....but I have gone to less dietetic or diabetic sweeteners and using more moderation.

Hi girls...I am NOT doing well. Whatever I have is kicking my ass. I am literally miserable. Cld the dr - have an appt @ 10 tom AM (Thursday). Still taking Darvocet and Tylenol, heating pad - get some relief but not 100%. I am very concerned...headache is horrible. I NEVER get headaches, NEVER. I am scared. dh is freaked...I have been crying on and off all day. I'm sorry...I have just never felt like this. I'm being stubborn about going to the ER, dh is trying to talk me into going. I think I'm afraid to actually find out what's wrong. I usually want to know, but this is different than anything I've dealt with. I need to vent.............Sigh.................................

Laura I'm so glad you are seeing the doctor tomorrow. Really hope you feel better soon. I wonder if the headache is from lack of sleep? This came on very quickly. It could be some kind of infection no?
Hope the doctor finds some relief for you.

Hi:
Laura, I hope the doctor will care for you well tomorrow. Going to the ER is not a bad opition in y opinion. They can decide if you need tests or not. The bad thing is waiting in the ER. My primary tells his patient to go to the ER if we are miserable as they can get tests done quickly and get answers faster if it is a serious situation. Anyway, I wish you well.
WOW! Thanks for all this on artificial sweeteners. I am amazed at our collective information and thoughts on the subject. I do not know at all (perhaps no one does with certainty) but it is certainly interesting. I think for me diet pop is a learned habit. I went without that stuff for two years of retirment. As soon as I was back in the faculty lounge, with fatigue from the rigors of teaching, I was back to to the diet pop. The friend I work with (mom has the BC along with her sister) may have prompted her mother to bring this hypothetical connection up at dinner last night as she knows I am a diet pop habit drinker. The conversation happened right after I ordered........
! Now that I have grandkids, I look at candy and man, candy is filled with all sorts of artificial stuff. Stay with that pure chocolate that covers a raisin or a peanut. The other candies are very scary with ingredients I fail to even know about.
So thanks. I love this interchange even though none of us know for certain what broughtabout our cancers when genetics is notthe obvious connection.

Laura,
Susan's advice is exactly what I'd say.. although I hate the ER, they can figure things out faster if it's not something easy to figure out.. they can get you in and out of tests so much faster!! Please keep us all posted and let me know if there is anything you need!!

Laura sorry you are feeling so bad, sending prayers for some answers tomorrow.

Laura - I have been thinking about you all day. Going to the ER is not a bad idea. They can run any tests they may need to and why put yourself through another sleepless night.

Oh Laura I hope you are feeling better soon too. Hugs to you.

Valgal -- I didn't know that raisins helped with RBC -- thanks for the tip! Rita -- I am definitely indulging in red meat so much more than usual, it feels extremely indulgent, but I do NOT want to have a blood transfusion if I can avoid it, and steak and hamburgers are very tasty medicine! I'll have to wean myself off them in a month.
Laura -- thinking of you and I really hope you feel better soon, and get some quick and calming answers.

Laura - I'm so sorry you're having such a bad time of it! Hopefully, things will ease up enough for you to make it to your Doc appt. tomorrow morning. If they get worse, I think you should consider listening to your DH..
I don't think I ever drank a lot of pop. When I did though, it was always Diet. The past few years, I only indulge once in a while, so I don't worry too much about it. I do drink a lot of ice tea though. McDonald's drive-through, $1.00 for a large! And about half the time, I will add a Splenda. I use Splenda in my coffee too. I'm sure a study will come along any time now (if it already hasn't) proving that Splenda is carcinogenic too.
Ginger ale is my pop of choice most of the time. Love the Green Tea Ginger Ale.
