Robo and others looking for a 5K--I like this site.  You can find races by location, distance and month.

There are others that I have heard about that I am interested in that aren't here. The Bright Pink Org did a race over the summer where they race in their underwears.  The Undie Dash.  Anyone interested in this?  :)  There is also an Elvis isn't Dead Dash or something like that it during the week in the summer.

Run, blackjack, run!  I'm more of a walker and would love to join anyone doing a "Walk".  I've been working out at the gym everyday and spending at least 30 minutes on the elipitical with a few power walk laps around the track.  Today I was there at evening rush hour and the track was so busy that I had to run just to keep from getting run over.  Wasn't sure I could do it anymore, but it did feel good.

Spent most of today in the city for a 5-minute visit with my PS a NW who was running late for a change.  Everything okay and he was satisfied that the infection in my incision had healed properly.  He rather laid it on hard that if this ever happens again, I really need to get in to see him ASAP, rather than 10 days later.  Well, hopefully it won't be happening again.

I am in for lunch on this Thursday at noon.  Any place is okay with me.  I eat anything, unfortunately.  Just let me know.  I was kind of trying to pay attention today at other restaurants in the area.  I remember once that my PS's associate recommended a place called Volare which is at St Clair and Grand.  never have eaten there before, but would love to try it sometime.

Zap, keeping your DD in my prayers.  Yeh Katie for finishing chemo!  Hawk... sounds like you are anxious to get rads underway.  Good luck tomorrow.  I found rads to be much easier than chemo until the last week or so, when the fatigue set in and I had NO energy.  I really had to learn to take some "rest breaks" during the day so I cuddled up with my "blankie" and a guided imagery/meditation CD on my IPod.  I still like to do that!

Katie, I have the same diagnosis as you. Do you mind me asking what NSM is? I don't know any surgeons out if Northwestern ,I'm at Northwest community. I wanted to be close to home and live in Arlington Heights. They have a good reputation for Oncology, my group studied and did fellowship at Northwestern and one at Yale so I'm confident they are up to latest advances in treatment. I like being close since I'll be going back to the office in a few weeks. 1 cm tumor, you had chemo before lumpectomy or mastectomy? I am 3 weeks post op bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction,

Bogie I believe NSM is nipple sparing mastectomy.

I might be a little late on Thursday due to interview in the morning but maybe not. We'll see.

Morning....we got our real pour-down through the night....but you'd almost not know it this a.m. Glad...I was dreading the mud.

Joan  --  we have a similar problem -- food bring it on.  I lovingly recall the good ole' days of being able to eat a ton of ( not at all good for you food ) and it just wouldn't stick on me.  Good old Mother Time will douse you soundly some day on that. SIGH !!!  I have to get with the program here......

I am having some trouble keeping up with some of you new gals so bear with me.  I am wishing you well.....especially those finishing or starting.

zap/Susan....always asking the Universe for at least very good if not great outcomes.  Bj, your incredible.

Hi to everyone else....and where are you hiding Rita???

Hope you all have a good day....and a dry one.

    Hugs, Jackie

    Katie....yay for no mo chemo!

Hawk...I hated rads. After the marking session I went home and cried...I looked like Frankenstein. I had 3 male techs which I hated but they were so nice. LOVE the idea of lotto scratchies!

    Zap....prayers for DD!

All this talk about running! Had to look up 5K to see how far that was (3.1 miles) so I did that at the gy

! Ok...I can do that walking at a good pace. I will try running/ walking next time. Doubt if I will ever run a 5K but now I'll just work on my time!

    Have a great Tuesday!

hawk - It is very overwhelming. Your reaction is not uncommon and certainly justified. Hang in there...keep reminding yourself that it will be over soon and then you'll have Springtime and then Summer. You can do it! Best wishes.

    katie - LAST CHEMO...great!

Bogie- lago is right NSM is nipple sparing mastectomy. Th surgeons i found are on the northshore and do ops at evanston hospital. I had a lumpectomy but good shephard hospitalmissed things :( but they were worried about the recovery time so i did chemo and ill be doing bilateral mast next month (feb) most likely nipple sparing. In the past 7 yrs my dr hasnt seen a nipple recurrence and he does 2 a week! Those are some pretty good odds!

Zap - love that website!  Right up my ally.  Thanks for sharing.  I will be sharing that with lots of people in my life.  Does anyone else NOT eat anything out of a can?  If you do eat anything in a can and want to avoid BPA, Eden Organics is the ONLY brand that has no BPA.  FYI in case anyone didn't know.  YOu can get it at Whole Foods and other healthy grocery stores.  Most main stream grocery stores don't carry it.

MDG: I thought it was good too but I have a question for you.  I have totally cut down on eating canned foods.  My question is about plastic bottles.  Do you think shampoos in plastic bottles (any soap for that matter) is a risk?  I see some shampoos in glass bottles but they are generally four times the price.  Any thoughts on that?  I think not of myself, necessarily, but my grandchildren (but I do think of myself too :)!

Also, I checked my fridge and I have foods in plastic bottles and I realized that I put maple syrup and honey in the microwave to warm them up.  That is probably a major no-no.

I am hardly a fanatic when it comes to this stuff but I cannot help but notice that there are so many BC cases and so many are younger than me, so I am becoming more aware for my grandkids and my own daughters. My own daughters are so aware and so I am grateful for that,

Zap - I have wondered the same thing about other items in plastic bottles.  I try to avoid as much plastic as possible but my honey/agave and hair products are in plastic bottles.  I don't heat anything in plastic at all.  I have gotten rid of all of my plastic food storage and gotten Anchor Hocking glass containers (they can go in DW, freezer and oven) with plastic BPA free lids.  I also worry about fresh salsa that comes in the plastic containers in the refrigerator section of the grocery store.  I also am thinking about mustard and ketchup. I don't eat that stuff much, but for the most part it comes in plastic.  What drives me nuts is that a company goes to all that trouble to produce an organic food and then they put it in a BPA container.  WHY????  In Sweeden they are trying to ban BPA completely.  I wish they would here!!!  If people can sue Mc Donald's for getting too fat from eating their foods, why can't I sue the FDA for allowing BPA in everything now that I have BC????  OK...can you tell this issue makes me completely mad?????  I won't even let my son drink bottled water...he was out yesterday with me and was thirsty and I could just not buy hime a bottled water.  We were close to home so it was not a big deal but I just can't give it to him.

I am trying to cut down on the canned goods as well.  Namely and easily is soup.  I get the boxed organic kind now.  Most veggies are easy too as fresh or frozen taste better and are easy. Not easy--tomatoes. I  have been trying to make my own sauce to cut out the sugar and chemicals, and purchased organic canned tomato sauce.

What also isn't easy is pumpkin.  My son loves pumpkin pie and I will whip one up for him for a good report card, etc.  I have been purchasing organic pumpkin, but this too is pretty hard to find in another kind of packaging.  I know I could use fresh pie pumpkins, but I have never had one that I thought tasted as good as the canned organic.

Any suggestions or pumpkin or tomatoes?

Corrine - Pomi tomatoes come in a carton.  I get them at Fresh Market, Meijer and Soup to Nuts.  They have nothing but tomatoes in them....no other ingredients and they come from Italy.  I also found pumpkin puree in a carton at Whole Foods - Pacific Natural Foods - it is also organic.  I found it around Thanksgiving time.  I have not been back over there lately to see if they carry it year round or seasonally.

Glad I could help..it took me a while of researching to find them.  I am Italian...it was hard to think of not being able to cook sauce again because of BPA!

Thanks regarding Pomi tomatoes. I doubt I will get rid of all my can goods (like dark red kidney beans) but I know that tomatoes in a can are even worse because they are so acidic. I use so many canned tomatoes… now I have an option if I can find them.

I'm not Italian I just look like one Tongue out

Do any of you use the "green" bags or containers to keep produce fresh? I have a feeling that they are made with toxins. Also...my dh uses our food saver (the machine that seals leftovers for freezing). But again, I wonder if the bags are toxic. Thanks...

Good questions Laura.  I don't know about that.  I do use ziploc bags at times but I opt for glass whenever possible and tin foil over plastic if I don't have a lid for that bowl.  I wish we didn't have to worry about this stuff....it's just wrong!

Lauren...you could pass for a fellow Italian!  Mangia!!!  Eden Organics makes canned beans that are BPA free.  I keep some on hand if I don't have time to plan in advance and soak dry beans.

I use Debbie Meyer Green Bags. I find not only are they PBA free the veggies last longer and the lettuce stays crisp. My husband thinks I'm nuts though.

One thing I forgot to mention is plastic wrap is the worst for PBA from what I have read. Seems Saran wrap & ziploc bags are PBA free. Gladware plastic containers are also PBA free. linky

I believe the plastic wraps that stretch and stick well are not.

Trying to follow along a bit with this current discussion.  I am always looking for BPA free stuff and use glass as much as possible.  Lago... where to you get the Debbie Meyer bags?  Order online?  I will have to look for the Pomi products as I use alot fo tomato sauces, etc.  I tried making my own pumpkin puree this Thanksgiving for pies, etc and did not like it as well as the regular canned pumpkin.  I have found organic canned pumpkin quite easily though.  I also found organic sweet potato puree (canned) at Target and use that for corn bread recipe sometimes.

On another note, my DH just returned from annual skin check with the dermatologist.  DH gave her my speil on sunscreens preventing us from absorbing Vitamin D, etc.  So she gave him samples of Neutrogena's Healthy Defense moisturizer (SPF 50) and recommended using it everyday.  Guess what.... its loaded with about every sort of paraban you've ever heard of.  Paraban free sunscreen, anyone?

Joan I found some paraben free tanning lotion very hard to find at Sephora.  I wonder if they would have sunscreen that is paraben free?

I found the bags in Whole Foods. Funny I dont' shop there but on occasion there are things I can only find there like pure cocoa butter etc.

Joan there are lots of paraban free products out there. I don't worry as much about parabans because I am not convinced it is a problem and I don't think we are exposed to as much as you think. PBA is another story though. We are swimming in PBA!
