Good morning, Loungettes! 

Goldie--being overweight does affect the length of some surgeries, and DIEP recon is one that it impacts a lot.  Other surgeries aren't affected by weight so much.  Plain mastectomy doesn't take any longer with higher body weight,  for instance.  I am so blessed that my PS took his time with me, I didn't need any other surgeries, no touch ups at all!  Of course, I did opt to skip nipple recon, but that would have been an office procedure, no anesthesia.   Great DOTD, too!

Juliet--the anesthesia part was easy for me, I slept through it!  The anesthesia brain was a real pain in the anatomy, though. 

Cammy--drains are standard after mastectomy, sometimes you get them with a lumpectomy  if needed.  Funny about showers, my BS didn't allow showers while drains were in to prevent infection, my PS insisted on a daily shower starting the 3rd day in the hospital, with all 4 drains in, also to prevent infection!  Yup, you leave the hospital with drains in.  Used to be outpatient surgery to have a mastectomy, they called them "drive by mastectomies."  They had to write legislation to require insurance to cover at least one night in the hospital after a mastectomy.  Good for you for putting your feet up while Stella cleans!

Cammy--what you had was two separate unilateral mastectomies, the second one with lymph node dissection.  A bx is a biopsy, when all or part of a suspicious lump is removed for pathology testing.  A lumpectomy is removal of a cancerous lump.  If a lump is not cancerous and is removed it's called a biopsy.  The length of time the drains stay in is very variable, even for the same person, as you found out.

DOTD is the Birthday Celebration, Day 2

10 to 14 fresh raspberries

1 oz freshly squeezed lime juice

3 oz ice cold water

1/2 oz simple syrup (or to taste)

2 oz orange vodka

1/2 triple sec

Blend raspberries, lime juice, water and simple syrup until smooth.  Shake vodka, raspberrymixture, triple sec until cold.  Serve in a chilled martini glass, garnish with a lime slice. 

Cami, I hope we have answered your questions. I certainly understand where you are coming from, not caring what it’s all called and what not. After all, it is what it is. But yet again you make me laf, telling your surgeon he left you breastless!

Oh Dorothy, I am so sorry to hear about your friend losing her father. It was sweet of you to pass along the blessing to her, and I hope it brings her some comfort. And yes, the pictures are so beautiful, but that is really how it looks in Ireland (well except for the big cities like Dublin).
