Can we have a forum for "older" people with bc?

Jackie, my healing thoughts being sent to your SIL. Cancer is such a horrible disease and, as Bonnets said, takes its toll not just on the victim but the family and friends.
Bonnets, I hear you about how difficult it is to lose weight and maintain the loss. I just went into the kitchen and said to dh, "I'd like a cup of chocolate but it will cost me 1 pt. so I'll have some hot tea instead." I made him a cup, too. In truth, a good cup of Earl Grey tea is not suffering! I have the Swiss Miss sugar free chocolate mix that is only 60 cal. but I'll save that for later to satisfy my chocolate craving.
My sister and her dh who live close to my mother had a big breakfast with my mother this morning. They do that on the average of once a week, usually Sat. My sister cooks and cleans up. This morning they had bacon, eggs, grits and biscuits. Just typing that may put an extra lb. on me!

Carole, That breakfast sounds so good. Bacon is the only meat I ever long for. Haven't eaten meat for well over a year. I think reading may put a lb on me as well.
Jackie, Hugs for your entire family. I'm glad her daughters are there along with you and your DH. Having an infant present when someone is dying makes it better for me somehow. Makes thinking of existence as a huge circle easier.

Something to think about. My RO suggests, "don't be hard on yourself about weight. Give yourself a break. You can worry about that in five years." It has been a lifelong struggle for me.

Hi, I am an older woman now, I was 53 when I was diagnosed...am 68 now, I had breast cancer, a lumpectomy, followed by 6 weeks of radiation, I am new to this site...my name is Pat

Hi Pat, Welcome to our group. We have people from all over and have fun 'chatting' with each other. So you're 15 years out? Congratulations. I'm 73, dx 2 years ago at 71. I'm glad you found this site. It's been wonderful for me because I didn't tell very many people in my life. It's a great place to talk to people who 'get it'.

Welcome, Pat. I second Wren's congratulations on 15 years free of bc.

Pat... Welcome to this site. This is a great site and a great group of ladies.
Jackie....you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. This disease is hard on the whole family.
Our family has gone through 3 out of 4 girls to go through this battle. One is 25 years out, I am 4 years out of being dx and one of our sisters gave in to her battle and passed in July of last year. There is no rhyme or reason to this disease.
We are in the low 20s and more snow is expected tonight and tomorrow.
Carolhalst....enjoy all the Mardi Gras festivities. We have been in New Orleans for St. Patricks day parade and they would great. I will be in New Orleans this summer. The food is delicious and the music is great.
Better say good night for now. Have a great week everyone.

Pat -- glad you found us. Hope you will jump right in. Add my congratulations along with everyone else's. Our major goal in life was not really to be a part of a cancer blog, but here we all are and here is where we continue to find care and comfort and answers and a chance to just talk to people who understand.
Blessings
Jackie

Pat,
I'll ad another welcome to the group. I'm 71, diagnosed a year ago. You are certainly encouraging ! I lost a daughter to BC, at the age of 33, after 6and a half year battle. The club no one wants to belong to!

Hi Pat,
We're glad to have you join us. I've been here about six months. I'm 65 and had my bilateral mastectomy.in late August. I've had some complications along the way, so I'm going in for surgery #4 in about two weeks. I come here to take my mind off cancer, laugh and cry along with the crazy "old" ladies on this thread, commiserate and offer a supportive word when I can.

Sandra, love the women.
Well yesterday I spent from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM in the ER with DH. He had been having some chest pain it started on Sat. evening, but then on Sun and Mon. it was OK. We went out on Mon. and gathered yucca stalks for broom handles and by Tuesday morning he was really complaining. They ran all the tests for a pending heart attack, every thing was good. They were going to keep him over night, but it had been 5 hours so they ran the heart enzyme test again and it was the same as when he came in. They decided it was muscular. He had carried a 100 lb spindle on Sat. He will follow up with his Dr. on Friday. He thinks he is 20.
Spring break starts here on Mon. so hopefully we will be busy, hope the weather stays nice.
Have a great day

Men! They all think they can still do what they used to do with no consequences and then are surprised when they end up with an injury. Sorry for you both Mommarch. Hope he is better soon.

Welcome from me, too, Pat. I'm soon turning 67 and just finished radiation. Congrats on 15 years. It is encouraging to be here and see so many women who have put cancer behind them years ago and now encourage others. I have found this group to be fun and compassionate. Plus there are some women with wonderful literary skills and humor.

thanks Sandra, I recalculated my years cancer free, first diagnosed in Oct 1997. My daughter was 6 weeks pregnant, he is now 15, lol forgot about carrying him for 7.5 more months, and he will be 16 in June ..
I have a problem with celluiltis every four or five months in the breast that was radiated, and have to take antibiotics every time it happens.

I will be 69 in Oct, God that sounds old lol...But at least I'm alive !! Have had a couple of scares since my surgery, had to go back for mammogram recheck 2 times, but everything was ok.I have 4 sisters and I am the only one to develop BC, my mom passed away 2 months ago at the age of 88, from a broken hip, never had BC either ...

Went to the gym this morning. This afternoon I met my niece and her 3 kids at the movie theater and treated them all to a movie. I went with the two girls, 8 and 4, to see Frozen and my niece accompanied her son, 10, to see the Lego Movie. It was $38 for the movie tickets for 2 adults and 3 kids and $31 for the popcorn and sodas. Too expensive to do often. The kids are out all week for Mardi Gras and I wanted to do something with them for entertainment. Frozen was entertaining with some great visual effects. I can enjoy a good children's movie. Or book.
I've had terrible news about a bc friend in FL. She had Stage 0 bc about 10 years ago, but last year she was diagnosed with a different kind of cancer that was in the linings of her organs. She underwent surgery, had heavy-duty chemo and is feeling good. But more cancer has been detected and her surgeon offers little hope that another round of chemo will extend her life. She's such an intelligent, good person, a few years younger than me. I feel awful for her.
We should make the most of every day.
Hugs to all.

Welcome Pat.
Mommarch, glad husband did not have a heart attack. Hope he will watch the heavy lifting.
Carole, I saw "Up" with my granddaughter this weekend. I don't usually enjoy animated movies, but the message was wonderful. Of course, young ones make everything special.

Yes, yes, yes, most men just think they will never "lose" it but it goes about as fast as everything else. mommarch hope he gets better soon. I think sometimes the strain is just as bad or maybe a bit worse to get over. My back strain was......I think nearly three weeks. Seemed forever to me.
Carole how interesting.....the refreshments were as costly as the tickets. Your right....hard to do often. Good memories of a fun time -- especially for the young ones.
Laney, my birthday is Sept. 13th. Sometimes it is hard to believe I'm this age. I just think where did the time go. I guess we get busy living and don't realize how often we go past the roses and aren't stopping to enjoy the fragrance. I try to think about that so I can.....then it seems another big thing comes along to "steal" some of my attentiveness.
Was a beautiful day today and hopefully we will have a few more. Keep hoping we will make it without another snow for the season, but you just don't know.
See you all later.
Blessings
Jackie

When I was in my 40's and did a lot of gardening, I went to the dr. because of pains in my chest. He quickly determined that the pains were muscular. I was SO relieved. Then I figured out that doing some shoveling had probably strained some chest muscles.

It's so interesting to listen to women here who are so vibrant. If you read the posts skipping the places where we tell our ages it is impossible to guess them. This would be a wonderful group of friends to have near at hand. I went to a retired school personnel meeting where a woman did a dramatic reading based on plenty of research and photos about Nita Snook. She was the Iowa woman who taught Amelia Erhardt ( sp?) to fly. They were almost the same age. Nita owned an airfield and flew for a living. Amelia was actually a social worker who flew for a hobby. Very interesting.

Pat, When in Oct is your birthday? Mine's the 25th and I'll be 74.
Sally, I loved "Up". It was the sweetest love story and I just loved Doug, the dog. My family can say "Squirrel!" and everyone laughs.
I'm hoping to see Frozen on netflick when I visit DS.
I knew some people who worked for a theatre. They said the tickets barely cover the cost of renting the movie; all the profit comes from the concessions. So much money for such unhealthy food.

Good Morning Ladies---
I see we'll be down for a few hrs, today for maintenance except I bet there will be something new and I will not be able to figure it out--ooo another hurdle.
Mommarch I'm sorry I didn't address about u'r DH earlier, but boy that's a scare we forget that there are muscles there to sprain all we know is Heart. I'm glad it wasn't more, I think there is enough going on for u..
Well this old lady is up to early and has to get myself together which means I have to move positions, same room just different area.
