Jackie Illinois lady, keep up the wonderful poetry.  And that cake!  Must have made your birthday special Carole.  My trip to Arizona was a good change.  But I had an awful cold for a week after return.  Anyone else get sick just catching a bug right after rads?

My birthday cake wasn't nearly as pretty as the one Jackie baked!  I made a red velvet cake with some help from Pillsbury and iced it with a pre-made icing.  I wrote 71 on the top with chocolate chips!  Today I took it out to my mother's house along with food for noon dinner and those who ate it thought it was very good!  My family isn't very discriminating.

Dinner was rotisserie chicken from Sam's, baked fries (white potato and sweet potato), and broccoli and cheese.  Everything was bought at Sam's!

Tomorrow is WW meeting.  I know I haven't lost any weight this week with the birthday celebration.

I, too, wish Rita would check in and reassure us that she's ok.

Mimi, More likely it was the trip rather than the rads. I was a travel agent and we just accepted that coming home with a cold was the price for travel.

After monsoon rains yesterday, today was sunny for a short time and high clouds after that. We went to the garden center where the parking lot was almost completely full.

    Carole,

MMMM red velvet! My favorite. Sounds like you cook the same way I do! Quick and easy, with a litle help from our friends! We also share trying to loose weight and our age!

Had a beautiful weeken. Today cloudy , maybe some rain. That's better than snow.

Wren, I came home from our trip last month with a cold. Still have the cough as a remembrance.

Count me in as loving Red Velvet cake.  Hate to say it, but I prefer it made from scratch as it just tastes a little better to me, but if I don't have time, I won't quibble......I'll just do what I have to.  I like "from scratch" anything pretty much, but sometimes there is no time to be fussy.  Main reason is that boxed cakes were not on the scene when I was growing up.  I use them a lot of make other things though.

I also hate to say because I certainly don't want to jinx myself, but I don't get colds.  Nothing that way during chemo in the very heart of a really cold winter here, and nothing with rads either.  I dealt with some not so nice se's, but a cold just wasn't one of them.  I'm having the runny nose/sinus that I usually find troubling me lately every time the weather changes.  Due to be in the 70's here today ( oh, glory be ) and though my nose will run I won't care because the temps will be so fantastic.

Will get back to my walking routine today.  I'm losing.....it is slow but that is ok as long as it keeps going down.  I think I'm down 23 or 24 lbs. now.

Anyway, hope we all will start very soon into Spring-type weather that will stay.  Old man winter has been on the harsh side this winter season and though I love winter too.....I'll be so glad to see it go away this time.

    Blessings

    Morning all,

I am in the ER with my husband.  At least he finally chose to come.  I was going to have to "make" him get medical treatment today since he has been ill since Saturday.  I am guessing pneumonia.  Thanks for listening.

Sally - so sorry about the ER, hopefully immediate attention will start the road to recovery fast.  So smart to get the attention.  Pneumonia is nothing to ignore.  Sounds like we are all happy with warmer weather.  I walked the dog for the first time since diagnosis.  She was sp pleased and so am I.  I'm at our summer cottage to check out ice damage, get a faucet fixed before summer etc.  happily the decision to leave the heat a little high has been smart.  The heat bill stinks, but some neighbors had frozen pipes and water damage squirting everywhere now that things are thawing.  Spring is almost here.

Hi gals!  I'm so sorry I have been away for awhile....  Just trying to get my "sea-legs" back....Ha!  I'm healing really well, I think, condidering the rod, * the big thing like a screw at the top that is going into the ball & joint, and a screw lower down to hold the rod in my femur.    But we went to Costco today, walked around..... but the snack-bar was CLOSED for remodeling!  Dang!  I couldn't get my favorite chicken-bake!

But we get out about every other day.... using the walker and my new razzle-dazzle cane!  I went out and practiced using the clutch in my car today!  It's like physical therapy I think...Snooze  Maybe another week, and I'll be ready.    DH drives us everywhere, but I just want to get back to normal....whatever THAT is...Winking

After you guys have surgery, does it take you awhile for the "fog" to clear from your head?  I mean I'm only taking 1 Xstrength Tylenol like every 8 hours, but I don't think it is THAT that makes me feel tired.... or lack of energy!    Maybe it was the anesthetic?   I have lots of energy when I get up, but after a few hours I run out of steam....

Sally, is your DH alright?  Did they let him go home with you?  I hope he is better......  !

I'll be back guys.....  and talk to y'all later!  We're supposed to get a weather change again tomorrow.... Just wish it would change to SPRING!!!!!

You go Chevy!  Costco is a big trip.  I think everybody feels like they loose steam quickly after surgery.  Take care.

I think  it is hard on the system to do anesthesia.  When I was younger, it seemed like it took me days and days to wake up.  When I had my lumpectomy.....I don't think maybe I was that far under because once I came awake......I never missed a beat.  For something with such repair steps and issues, I bet you were a lot farther under Chevy.

Anyway, good to see you here.

Mimi.....isn't the warm weather fantastic.  We had a bit of a coolish breeze but for the  most part the pleasure of the sun and warmer temps diminished anything it could do or was doing.  I just felt alive again.

    Blessings

I've been getting outside to walk everyday  Lots of flowering spring bulbs and an occasional slice of blue sky and sunshine.

Wren44 - I'm getting the gardening bug yet know I need a lot of help.  The plan is to purchase the plants (with my dd's help) and then hire a crew to prepare the soil and then plant.  Around the time my chemo is done (late May) our local center has a special day where if you buy their plants and bring your containers they will donate the soil and elbow grease to fill them.  I plan on filling up 6 hanging planters for my fence and 5 baskets to hang up.  I hope to have luck training morning glories up my fence and onto my trellises.  Even if I only do a tenth of what I've planned - it is a step in the right direction!

    Chevy,

An anesthesiologist told me recently that the rule of thumb is that for every hour you are under general anesthesia, it takes a week for the brain fog to completely clear. One time I thought I was fine - it was about 2 weeks after surgery - but once I started to drive, I realized I was not ready. My reflexes were delayed and the whole experience seemed a bit surreal.

Chevy, it's good to have you check in and let us know you're healing and getting back to normal.

Jackie, glad you've enjoyed some warmer weather.  Congratulations on all that slow and steady weight loss.

I worked on our federal tax return all afternoon.  No tax return coming to us.  Quite the opposite.  The IRS wants more money.  So I'll wait a while to e-file.

I lost .4 lb (4/10ths) last week, which isn't bad with the birthday celebration.  I'm hoping to do much better this week.

Chevy, it was good to read about your progress ... so glad you checked in.

Thanks all for caring about my DH.  He was admitted for treatment for a copd exacerbation ... not pneumonia as I predicted.

I am exhausted, so I'll say goodnight.  Take care everyone!

Rabbitvelvet, Depending on how much the work the soil needs, it might be a good idea to wait to plant until that's done. If you're west of the mountains, it's still a little early to plant (except for sweet peas, lettuce, etc.). We used a wide deep saucer to plant lettuces. It sits on our deck and we snip leaves when we make a salad. Morning glories should be easy to get to climb the fence. My great grandmother and I always planted a package of Heavenly Blue morning glories because they were the color of my mother's eyes. We've started using containers more and more. They're a lot easier to reach. The hanging baskets sound beautiful. Be sure to post photos when they're in bloom.

Sally, Get some good sleep tonight. Nothing is more tiring than the ER.

    Hi everyone,

Sally....I hope your DH is doing okay and will be home soon

Happy belated Birthday Carole it sounds like it was great. Red Velvet is one of my favorites.

Chevy...It is good to hear you are getting out. I have not been to our Costco but it is on my list to go there.

Mimi.... hope you are feeling better soon. Glad your vacation was a good one.

Today my DH and I hit 42 years of marriage. I have to work today but he has the day off so it will be a quite night at home. Maybe we will celebrate this weekend.

Our forecast is for 4 to 8 more inches of snow.

Is anyone else still having a hard time logging on to this site.

Have to head to work. Hope everyone has a great day.

Morning my friends!  Yes Sally, so good he is better!  So does he have COPD?  I mean they can treat that, right?  Does he use a Nebulizer?

And Cammi, yes, little sweetie, you ARE being nice!  Are you sick or something?  Ha, ha!   I guess you guys are right....  especially about the cob-webs...  I didn't know if it was the XTylenol, or just everything.  Makes sense, that when they put everything to sleep, it takes longer than usual to get things in order.  Like my brain for instance! Loopy And Jackie, you always know where I am....  Same with me and the Lumpectomy.... I was awake, peeing blue, and went shopping the next day!   Of course having both Daughter's with us, kept us going full-steam ahead...!

I can really move my LEG now!  I mean lift it from the hip when I'm laying down!  I'm so excited!  My brain was telling it to "move, damnit, MOVE" but it just laid there!   This morning it's minding!  I think those nerves that went to the brain were still asleep.... I use my cane more than the walker at home now... Things just take time...

So Wren, do you mean "wide deep  saucers" like  the ones that go under big pots?  I have some of those!  I used one for my Fairy Garden, and had my DH drill little drain holes in the bottome....  I didn't think of planting herbs in them!  Makes sense!    You mean like this size?  This picture shows 2...

    image

Rabbit.... Yes, I'm changing things around in my yard also.... Trying to make it easier to plant, and clean!  I found 2 wicker/straw wooden chairs in the alley last Fall, and I'm going to maybe paint them a bright color, and use them to hold planters?   I saw some ideas on Pinterest...

I took this Fairy garden apart, because I had no-place to put it in the house, but I'll put things together somewhere outdoors, like under our huge Colo Blue Spruce tree, this Spring...

Hi Carole... Mommarch!  And Sandra and Mimi!   Have a fun Tuesday gals.... Supposed to get some snow today.... I would RATHER be outdoors thinking about GARDENING!  xoxoxoxo

Thanks for all the get well wishes for my crazy head old.  Much better now.  How odd to have cancer with no symptoms and feel awful from a cold.  But both are better now I believe.  A friend and I went searching for spring on the weekend.  We visited two greenhouses and soaked up the warmth , humidity and smells.  Best we're the smell of some large tomato plants and a jasmine plant in bloom.  I never appreciated the scent of a tomato plant before!  We each bought a small cilantro plant for our kitchens.  I love cilantro, but throw away lots that gets too old before I can eat the whole bunch.  I'm hoping this plant will be just right.  I'll have to bring it with me to the summer cottage.

Glad tour DH is getting what he needs.  The COPD exacerbations can come on so suddenly and be terrifying.  Chevy the fairy garden is sweet.  I saw several on my spring search.  Like a doll house for ladies.

It's a good thing I checked on the cottage this weekend.  The ice on the lake ripped the ladder off the dock.  It's stuck in the ice now, but secured with rope so it doesn't float away after the lake thaws.  It can be repaired I'm happy to say.  Any others with spring fever?  Remedies?

Chevy, That is the kind of saucer we used. I don't know if it would work for herbs because their roots are longer, but it's perfect for one of those mixed leaf lettuce packages. Lettuce has shallow roots and you can just snip off leaves as you need them.

Mimi, When you buy cilantro, it's in a bunch. When you get home put the stems in a jar with water and loosely cover with a plastic bag. Put the whole thing in the refrigerator. It will keep for a couple of weeks. Just whack off what you need at the time and put back in the refrigerator. Works for parsley, too. I haven't had any luck growing it here. Not enough sun and heat. That probably won't be a problem in Iowa.

Okay, yes!  It WOULD work better for lettuce, etc.  ... Probably even spinach?  I've planted it all in the ground, but the birds, worms seem to beat me to it!    I just LOVE fresh Cilantro.  I have a lot of Italian Parsley coming up every Spring, but no other herb makes it here....  Fresh Basil is also good to plant, in containers.

It is spitting snow, rain, sleet & ....wait.... Now it is REALLY snowing!  I'm just staying in, warm and cozy!

The fairy garden is really cute, Chevy.  You're sounding like yourself, full of spirit and optimism.  So glad your accident didn't get you down.

Sally, hope you got some rest.  And hope your dh is doing well.

    Happy Anniversary, Termite!

Yet another golf event was rained out today.  And tomorrow the regular women's golf is cancelled again.  I'll have to dust off my clubs when I eventually get to play golf.  Grumble, grumble.

DH and I went to gym this morning and, as always, it felt great "having" exercised once we were through.  I also earned some WW activity points.

Happy Tuesday, what's left of it.

    Hi all.

Drat ... the long note I wrote this morning did not post.  I thanked you all for your thoughts for my DH and gave a rather long update.  Since I only have a moment now, I will be brief.  The docs are treating his current breathing issues and are evaluating his COPD issues so that they can adjust his home treatment.  He must be feeling better because he is getting testy.

The gardening posts are wonderful.  They are a gift to my mind as I imagine plants and planters for this summer.

Wow  62 here today! By Thurs we will be back in the 20s. Good to see a lot of the snow melting.

Termite, I was having trouble til I made a new bookmark when I was on the site. Now I get on that  page OK and can get to the current one with no trouble.

I too was blessed to  return to  whatever normal is pretty quickly , after the lumpectomy, but we all are different. Rads never bothered me either. The numbness under my arm is annoying, but so far that's all . I did have  a large lymph ballon or what ever under the arm , but that eventually went away.

All you gardeners make me jealouse. I gave up  on it after battling the woodchucks and deer for a few years. I used to have a garden at the other house, but  the wildlife won here!

What a beautiful day in the San Antonio area. Our friends picked us up at 10 a.m. and we headed northwest up to Bandera and then through the beautiful mountains and valleys going further west to the little town of Leaky, about 100 miles away. We were headed to lunch at Chicken Earl's. Earl is open one day a week, Tuesday, from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. People drive from all over to get his chicken. We had to wait an hour, but finally got our lunch about 1:45. It was sunny and about 75 so we lingered at our picnic table outside for another hour before heading back, taking a different route.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYIAoy5H5Qw

We were delighted to see our first bluebonnets of the season. Beautiful! We stopped at a bakery, famous for it's bread, and even though it was late in the day, found a few loaves still available. We bought cookies to enjoy on the rest of our drive and pulled into our driveway at 5:30 p.m. Great day. Unfortunately another cold front will be here tomorrow and it will be in the 30's in the evening. imageSad
