Happy Thanksgiving to all my new friends. Welcome Sophie. I hope everyone enjoys this wonderful day. My nephew is here from Buffalo, so we have our 6 dogs, his golden, and our 6 cats. What a zoo.

Hi Sophie, glad you are here. Sometimes we are just plain silly here and other times we are quite serious. We're always supportive of one another, no matter what our past was or what our future holds. Old girls gotta stick together! Woo hoo!

    image

Sounds like everyone is enjoying their holiday. I am happy sitting in the recliner with plenty of blankets (after all, it was 45 in San Antonio this morning), a cup of tea, and the parade on t.v. Mike is busy in the kitchen. One of the blessings in my life is a husband who not only likes to cook, but claimed the preparation of Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners as his job. After 44 years, I wouldn't know how to roast a turkey or make stuffing/dressing. I help a little but mostly it just annoys him to have me jump into "his" kitchen so I stay busy setting the table, etc. I always make appetizers the day before and do the desserts. The dishes are my job, which is fine because I get to spend time with my beloved Wedgewood dinnerware. It's not used much now that we aren't in the military anymore. When he was in command positions, we were always having dinners. I never used to have to polish my silver because it was used several times a month. I have a lovely antique china cabinet where I can see my Czech crystal all the time but it looks it's best when it's on a beautiful holiday table. We had the foresight to buy service for 24 for the china and crystal so the three children can split it later. With only two of us here now, we are very casual now and I try to use as few dishes as possible.

Guess what? Our very own clown, Thelma (aka Mimi) is coming to see me next week. OK, she's really coming to San Antonio on vacation and has a busy schedule with her travel-mates, but I'll get to meet her in person. We're going to get together for lunch or afternoon coffee one day. Lucky me!

Hey Sophie - You've found friends. I'm sleepy after our company and holiday dinner. As a retired gal I don't get up that early most days. Hope you all had a good holiday, too.

Just got home about 6:30 p.m. from all the holiday dinners.  We only ate one meal, but stopped in at Dh's brother's house.  His three brothers were there.  They had cooked a ham and scalloped potatoes, green beans and corn.  Ambrosia salad.  They do ok -- we would have had a piece of pumpkin pie, but too full.  It was a nice day really and the first time I did not have to make something.  How fantastic.

Going to go throw myself in my recliner and watch something and try not to fall asleep.  That what a great big meal is good for.

    Teka,

Don't know where you get your picture graphics, but they are always just the thing.

    Chevy,

The only worse thing is when ( my hyper dogs ) take all the love I put into finding a "cozy" fantastic bed for them by removing all the stuffing.  Maybe they feel big, mean, ferocious -- whatever -- because they were able to dismantle completely something that was my LOVING gift to a 'bunch' that turned into slobbering maniacs trying to see who could be first to cause a huge lint and cotton explosion.  It took me about three tries ( I'm a slow learner that way ) to figure out -- like cats around a mouse hole, the need and temptation cannot be resisted -- and so the challenge continues, for someone else, but not for me.

Now the fantastic leftovers will begin.  I do have a turkey to denude a bit further and then to boil.  All will go into the freezer with several jars of prepared for the freezer, turkey soup.  Two or three casseroles and then whatever is left of the "stock" for future dishes.  This is one of the parts I really love.  That and the left-over pie.  Just un-beatable.

Hope you all have a great day yesterday.  Some of you may be shopping yet, but I don't do the Black Friday, Blue Monday, Green Wednesday or anything else like that.  It is all too much for me and the idea of possibly being trampled is really distasteful to me.  I wish to enjoy my made from Thanksgiving left-overs turkey soup.

    See you all later.

    Blessings

You mean like this Jackie? Ha! I just posted this on the other "fuzzy" thread... but you needed it here worse!

Just waiting for DH's Nephew to come and get my car.... don't know honestly how he can get it to his house, but I don't want to think about it. He is the one DH sold his 57 Chevy to.... I'll be more than GLAD to get rid of that car.... So he will fix it up, and sell it for a profit.... that's his "other" job... like a hobby....

Got everything cleaned out of my car, and ran the vacuum in it... It's cool and cloudy HERE....but supposed to warm up a bit...

We went over to feed the chickens and Edith.... She just MEOWS the whole time we are there.... so I have to pet that girl, to make her happy! I took her some special canned cat food, and a little Turkey.... And those CHICKENS only lay one egg! A DAY! ONE chicken lays ONE egg! That must be what home-chickens do in the Winter... Loopy

    Teka,

Another perfect winner.  I love it.

    Jackie

    P. S. Chevy that is close but my dogs can't sleep anywhere near the pet beds when they are done.  Maybe they can lay down next to a small tuff of cotton, but there is so little that is recognizable when they are done.  Heathens -- all of them.

This should make for a happy life:

    Apple-Pear Crumble Pie

    Apple-Pear Crumble Pie recipe

This Apple-Pear Crumble Pie is one of our longest-running hits! We're talking five stars and rave reviews. Try it and see what the fuss is all about.

    time & prep

    40 min

    total:

    1 hr 15 min

    10 servings

    recipe

    what you need

24 vanilla wafers, crushed (about 3/4 cup)

    1/4cup  packedbrown sugar

    1/4cup  butter, melted

    1 ready-to-use refrigerated pie crust(1/2 of 14.1-oz. pkg.)

    4oz.   (1/2 of 8-oz. pkg.)PHILADELPHIA Cream Cheese, softened

    2large  bakingapples, peeled, sliced

    1large  pear, peeled, sliced

    1/3cup  granulated sugar

    1/4cup  flour

    1/2tsp.  ground cinnamon

    1-1/4cups  thawedCOOL WHIP Whipped Topping

    make it

HEAToven to 375ºF.MIXwafer crumbs, brown sugar and butter until blended.PLACEpie crust in 9-inch pie plate sprayed with cooking spray. Spread cream cheese carefully onto bottom of crust; sprinkle with half the crumb mixture. Combine fruit in large bowl. Add granulated sugar, flour and cinnamon; toss to coat. Spoon over crumb layer in crust; sprinkle with remaining crumb mixture.BAKE35 min. or until fruit is tender and crust is lightly browned, covering loosely with foil after 25 min. if necessary to prevent crust from overbrowning. Cool.SERVEtopped with COOL WHIP.

Blondie -- the apple pie for Michael -- I think this one would be easy and you could use what you have -- probably just need minor adjustments.  Also, I would imagine you could use graham cracker crumbs just as well.  Also could I'm sure use pre-made frozen crusts too.  I just do anything.  Been fortunate I think -- it always seems to work out with minor adjustments.

That is what kind of cook I've pretty much always been -- if I don't have something -- I just skip that part or throw in something else that seems to "match" well enough with the other ingredients.  Hope all comes out well.

    Jackie

Morning everyone -- it is overcast this morning -- rain, well I don't know but guess it could.  Hope not though.  I am looking forward to and hoping to have a productive day.  We ran around all day yesterday.  Dh had his yearly physical appt. at the Mt. Vernon V.A. and we had a bite to eat at Steak & Shake.  Anytime ( only when we have reason to go to Mt. Vernon ) that I'm near a Steak & Shake --- I have to go there and have one of the Double Garlic Burgers.  I'm this way --- if I order something to try and like it, chances are I will not change my "order" for a long, long time.  Before the Garlic Burger I was addicted to their Chicago Style Hot Dogs.  Oh my they are so good with two hot peppers on the top......but the first time I saw a Garlic Burger on the menu and tried it --  the Hot Dog is definitely no longer #1.

Later, though we did not do that much we went to my cousin's house.  Ate some dinner there and then I picked up her turkey carcass that she had saved for me.  She does this every yr.  I'm boil it and make stock as well as at least one turkey casserole, along with 3 or 4 quarts of turkey soup to freeze.  That way we can enjoy turkey for quite some time to come. Anytime I can eat meat that isn't red --- I'm pretty much happy.  We do eat red meat but try to keep it a minimum.

Hope you are all going to have a wonderful day.

    Blessings

I've never tried this, but it sounds even easier -- I have some apples here at home -- hmmm, maybe, huh !!!!

    SUPER EASY APPLE PIE

Put 4 to 5 cups of peeled and cut up apples in a baking dish.

Put 5 slices of bread that have been cut into strips on top of the apples.

    TOPPING:

    1 1/2 c. sugar
    1 egg
    1 stick melted butter

Combine these 3 items in a bowl, then pour over bread slices. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

Sounds good Jackie. Bet you could use stale bread as well since you're adding liquid to it.

I'm the same way in restaurants. I'll find a favorite and order it every time. DH teases me but I couldn't count the bowls of cioppino I've watched him devour.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving Day.

We had just my SIL and one of ousons over on Thursday. We will celebrate Thanksgiving tomorrow with the most of our sons and their families tomorrow. Son and family from Philadelphia did not make it back to Illinois this year. I did not go shopping this weekend although I did wrap a few Xmas presents we had already bought. Now I have a lot of catching up to do to be done by Christmas Day.

One DIL asked if we want to have Christmas at their house. I really do not care but feel it not fair to all grandkids cuz her children all the only grandkids on her side and her mother goes way overboard with gifts. Our other son and dil with 3 children (who do not spend exaccerated amounts on presents) will be there and see all her gifts and are still young and do not understand all this.

Granddaughter for Schaumburg who is 6 came in to spend the weekend with us. She called and asked if Boomps(grandpa) would pick her up on Friday afternoon. Of course he did. (haha) We have decorated the xmas tree, set out xmas items, did some schoolwork and are watching xmas shows. She is so much fun.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend

Wren -- how funny.  My Dh does the same thing.  I think he feels I'm not very adventuresome -- and he is mostly right.  I also think ( and there have been a number of these times show  up )  of the times he looks a bit longingly at my plate and if I see him he says, hmmm, this isn't as good as I thought it would be.  I know then he regrets his adventurous nature -- a whole lot.  He is not much of a complainer on food.  If he says things like that then I know what he has is not only un-appetizing  but probably horrible.

The first time I got him to try one of the Garlic Burgers ( they brush the top of the bun with melted garlic butter ) before I could stop him He had grabbed a big napkin and wiped it off.  Told him -- well, you just ruined your burger.  He ate it, but it didn't have the umph it should have.....and he learned the next time he had one just why you don't do that.  Funny guy --- and typical.  I didn't do that to mine -- but he didn't think I knew what I was doing I guess -- eating all that " grease " they let get on the buns.   You can tell men don't like to read --- because if you read how they make it on the menu -- it tells you the top of the bun is brushed with garlic butter......  !!!!  Double Huge Sigh here...

Termite....I'm with you.  I think it is hard on little ones to be witness to much over-abundance.  I understand Grandparents often like to do this -- and we probably all took a bit of a turn at it -- but  it is so much sometimes.  I mean, how much can you really play with at once.  How nice if rather than so many extra gifts maybe some money be put away for something much later down the road.  Well, we all survive and at some point some explanations will be possible.  Still hard right now though.

Off to work.  See you all later.

    Hi everyone,

Tracy & I had a quiet Thanksgiving. She decorated the outside of the house. I relaxed. We managed to have our normal holiday dinner, and only used one pot(for gravy) and one pan ( for the turkey breast). All the sides were microwaveable. I spent many, many years cooking for 7 every night and always extras for holidays- cooking for 2 just doesn't compute with me.

My SIL inGa posted about not shopping on Thanksgiving (not that he shops all that much ever, except for Home Depot or harbor Freight), but it reminded me of Christmas several years ago, when all the kids were still local. Our tradition was to go to our oldest DD for breakfast and watch her boys open their gifts, then everyone would do their thing, seeing the other sides of their family or whatever, and we would all meet at my house for dinner. This particular Christmas, Bob had gotten the turkey all ready for the oven, left it on the counter, and when we got home from Namcy's, our Sheltie had done his best to eat the whole thing. Talk about wishing stores were open! One supermarket was, but all of their turkeys were either already cooked and sold, or still frozen. I don't remember exactly what we did, but we did have a turkey for dinner.

We did some shopping this weekend, but not for gifts. The repainting, redecorating etc we did last June, has changed our house quite a bit. When we went to decorate inside, things just didn't go where they used to. We ended up getting 4 new centerpieces and a new Nativity. Lots of fun, but I just don't have the energy I used to. We are at the point now of having everything but the tree up and will do that tomorrow.

I too, tend to get the same item in each place I eat out. Not very adventurous I know, but when I am paying for my meal, I want to know I am going to enjoy it. I do try lots of new recipes at home though.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend,

    Anne

I did no shopping and had no leftovers 😔 because we traveled and had Thanksgiving with family. It was wonderful to get home and sleep in our own bed and pet my own dog. It was nice working up a sweat yesterday to clean up the beds and put out the lights.

Now it is time to get trees ready. I so love Christmas and am making this one very different from last year's

H I all! Glad to find this forum. I will be 62 in a couple of weeks. The same week we are trying to schedule my BMX for my recently diagnosed ILC. What do I want for my birthday? A good report on the nodes.

Live on south central PA. Have the most amazing husband of 37.5 years. What does he want for the holidays? My smile. Says he didn't marry me for my boobs. I am blessed!

Seeing the PS tomorrow. Not sure I want to do the DIEP now. Have had 16 surgeries in my life and am comfortable with my aging body. Thinking flat and fabulous might be for me so I can stay active and swim.

    Thanks for being there!

Teacher -- there really is no place like home.  I love the joy of spending time with family and some of the un-expected great times with friends and family, but oh the comfort of just directing all of your actions, even just the comfort of sleeping in your own bed, and not having to do anything in any way that you don't want too.

Love your walk-way up to your door.  Sometimes -- it takes so little to be eloquent.  I wanted to walk up to your door -- so that is what the picture said to me.

We are having a downright balmy day -- something like an Indian Summer Day.  Hmmm, another big change.  All too soon we will be shivering again, but oh how great to walk outside this morning with no coat and being just fine.  The I-Heater is off as well as the furnace and the house is quite warm.

You know sometimes it is a comfort to hear that someone else "acts" like you do about certain things.  This eating the same thing every time.  Dh and I don't have a lot of funds ear-marked for eating out so I really would detest choosing something I dis-liked tremendously.  Probably for good will some places would let you 'order' something else -- but I would hate doing that.  I will in time TRY other things, but it is a slow process with me.  Just like being at home and what I cook here --- I prefer to enjoy to the fullest what I am eating.  So, I stick with what I know satisfies me.

Makes me think of all the years that I looked on food as mainly an intrusion on all the other things I would have rather been doing.  I had the world's best metabolism ( wish I still did ) and no matter what I did....getting up above 100#'s and or staying there was a real chore.  That was made worse by seeing food as a horrid time-taker for the things I'd have rather been doing.  I ran or rode a bicycle almost constantly.  That was back in the days though when there was less television to slow you down.  Even though we had the first ( for home ) t.v. in town, we could only get two stations and they were from St. Louis, Missouri then.  I'm pretty sure they were not even on part of the day.

Anyway, lots of things to do today that I didn't get to yesterday.  I think they will seem easier though with the mild outdoor weather.  I'll be back later.

    Blessings,

    Jackie

    Chloesmom,

Welcome to you.  Glad you found us though of course we all wish it was for some other reason.  You sound like you have a great attitude about things.  Likewise your husband.   Anyway, if you have read much here you know that we talk about almost anything ( quite light on politics  since it causes issues too easily ) but all else shows up.  We are good at hand-holding and support.  Some of us, like myself, are a ways out now from dx and txs. but we still care about others who are just beginning.

So, welcome to a great place and lots of caring people who look forward to nearly daily visits with one another.

    Blessings

Morning gals! Welcome Chloe's Mom! Oh I apostrophized you.... just never mind me.... (I had to look that up!)

Just waiting for DH's Nephew to call.... He is bringing over this car I have been looking at! It's at a dealer which he used to work at, and since he has a dealers license, I can buy the car from HIM! MAN, I am so excited!

We sold him my old car, because he will fix it up, and then sell it.... that's what he does on the side... But then last night, he called and offered to do this for us.... THAT way he will leave the car with us, and then come Tuesday, and we will do the paper work, and I will give him a check!

Nothing easier than that!, right? And I can look it over, see that it "fits" in our garage, and just thank my lucky stars for HIM! Ha!

So I should have another car today!

    Welcome Chloesmom

We are not happy you had to join us, but we are happy to have you in our circle .

Would you believe I just got "suspended" from decorating our Christmas tree? My 12 yr old GS, that lives with me asked to be called when I started to decorate the tree. I called (he was at a friends) and I told him I would be starting 15 minutes. Of course, he wasn't here when I started. When he finally got here he kept saying one whole section had to be redone. I finally asked if he wanted me to sit down while he fixed it. He said "Yes". I thought he didn't like the way I had put the ornaments on. That was not the problem- it's a new tree and all the branches had not been opened and spread properly. But when his mom came in from outside, there I was, sitting on the couch, while he is working on the tree. I told her I had been fired and she told Doug he couldn't fire Grandma from decorating her own tree. I replied that she was right, he hadn't fired me, he had just suspended me temporarily. He started to get scared that he was in trouble. I said ,no, he wasn't in trouble- I just didn't want mom to think I. Was slacking off on the job. GC are so much fun
