Carole, The sewers and quilters are hanging out on "Stitching the pieces together" thread. Also knitting and crochet experts as well. It's fun looking at each other's stuff.

There are a few organizations that test over the counter vitamins/minerals/supplements. One is called Consumer Labs. If they've tested it, their logo will be on the bottle. Another is called USP.
http://www.usp.org/usp-verification-services/usp-verified-dietary-supplements
It is shocking when you read that what the label says is in the bottle isn't even close!

That's me on the far right, with those saddle shoes. We made those aprons during first semester, cooking was 2nd semester.
Jan (I hate cooking to this day)

Oh I remember! Lemon meringue pie. First and last time I ever made it. What a lot of work. I'm with Jan on not liking to cook.

I still have some of those recipe's from cooking class! And did you also take "sewing" and typing? And short-hand was included! I barely passed with a D.... Short-hand was just plain hard.
But I finally got black-penny loafers! Hah! And those skirts must have been in 1954-5? And those bobby-socks that we would roll down into a tube?

Our pencil-skirts.... And if you had lots of money, you could get white suede shoes...Ha!

And crinolines under that poodle skirt! And sleeping with curlers in our hair!

Yup - eighth grade - 1/2 cooking & 1/2 sewing. Chevy, I too still have some of the recipes - particularly the white sauce. I was disappointed that I couldn't take some of the shop classes since I loved woodworking. Nope, only guys. And not only sleeping in curlers, but HUGE curlers with bristle brushes inside. My grandmother set pincurls with paper and straight pins. ouch!!

Chevy, that quilt is beautiful! What a treasure.

I remember ALL of that! I happened to encounter my former Home Ec. teacher in a dollar store recently. She looked and sounded great for her age, 80's. The dish that I remember cooking that was SO strange for a southern girl was New England Boiled Dinner. I told my parents about it and they thought it was odd, too. No seasoning just plain veggies and boiled eggs. I already knew how to sew but the teacher made me baste parts together, something my mother NEVER did. We just pinned and sewed. My mother took garments and used them as patterns and made clothes without a pattern. As I look back, I learned quite a bit in Home Ec and some ideas stuck to this day.

And I like cooking.

Morning all
Chevy that quilt is incredible- what an amazing treasure. My three oldest children have afghans my mother made for them. The last one was finished by my sister after my mother passed. My sister both knits and crotchets. I have no talent to do either. I used to sew though. When I quit working to have my first child, the first thing I did was read "Gone With the Wind". Then I bought a sewing machine and pattern. I was so clueless, I bought material that looked closest to the picture on the pattern. I made almost all my clothes for many years, including pantsuits with collars and lapels. I made all my daughters clothes and for Christmas, would make the girls several outfits, including nightgowns, with matching outfits for their dolls. I made my 2nd daughter a dress for her first day of school, but by that time we had become foster parents. When I found that same dress, still waiting to be hemmed years later, I realized my sewing days were over.
Funny thing about typing and shorthand- I was on the college bound program in HS. and got mostly A's and B's. I failed typing the first go round, which was even funnier because my sister, who was on the commercial program, got her only A in typing. I passed shorthand, not because I was good at it, but because I had a good enough memory, I could remember what was dictated.
Years aNd years later, I began working for the local school board. I wAs hired as a teacher aide to work in the classroom, but within a very short time, I was working mostly in the office. It took me a while to realize the pay for clericals was a lot higher than for aides, but you had to pass a typing test. I knew I couldn't pas it, but decided to take it, just to see how far I had to go to pass. I passed (barely), but I passed. I think it was 40wpm with 3 errors. I got 42 with 2 errors. I swear to you, I never again met that criteria. Thank goodness, computers were taking over, where I could correct my errors and speed was not an issue.
I am doing as well as can be expected, I guess, after the surgery. All the surgical tape has fallen off, and that makes it a little more comfortable, but I am still very sore. Last night was the first night I didn't need a Percocet to sleep.I haven't been taking any during the day since two days after surgery. I go back to the surgeon on the 29th.
Hope you all have a great day
Anne

I remember the saddle shoes. My Dad would always make me polish them before I ever wore them, thus ruining that new look. He wouldn't even let me wear them just to church before polishing. My poodle skirt was black and the poodle was pink.
Anne, I know what you mean about finding the dress that still needed a hem. Been there, done that. I'm glad you're more comfortable and don't need the strong stuff during the day. Don't hesitate to use it at night if needed. Sleep is very important for healing.

The fun part of saddles...........................polishing the white part first, and then doing the "black part", and trying to keep it from going on the white...............
Now that was a challange.......could never do that today with my unsteady hands....LOL.......God gives us the right things at the right time doesn't he..............LOL...............

So you don't mean these?

But aren't they CUTE? I couldn't even try a pair ON now! And I always wanted to put a dime in my loafers, because that meant you were "rich".... I used a penny instead....
I just thought these were cute...

Forgiveness is an act of love. As I forgive, I release negative energy that may manifest as resentment or anger. I open the way for something positive to happen. If I feel wronged or annoyed, I release the impulse to judge. The lines of communication remain open, and understanding flows freely. Relationships with family, friends and colleagues flourish when I act with compassion and easily forgive. I relate to others in harmonious ways. I exercise the same forgiving attitude toward myself. If I have erred, I learn from it and move on.

Ah Home Ec. Those were the days. One of the first things we did was weigh in and be measured for height. My Home Ec. teacher was sooooo upset. I was the 5' 8" I am right now but weighed about 86 #'s. Mrs. Stewart was mortified. She exacted a promise from me that I would apply to work in the cafeteria and that it would be after the lunch periods were over. She had a plan -- that I should gobble down as many of the left over deserts that I could get down. Suited me -- those who worked in the cafeteria got to eat free which is about the only way I'd have been able to eat in the cafeteria anyway.
Sort of shows you that we didn't seem too heavy-duty on nutrition then. Of course, I did gain some wt. All the sugar I was eating some of it was bound to stick. I think likely any gained went back away on the week-ends -- I either ran or rode my bike every day -- a lot. But, I made Mrs. Stewart a little happier for a while. Wonder I didn't end up sick from an almost constant afternoon sugar high.
First thing we cooked in Home Ec. class was Eggs a' la Goldenrod ( which means with a white sauce ) and Baked Alaska. What were we thinking -- I don't know, but it was good. Have never had Baked Alaska again. I think we also had to make aprons first -- sigh !!! I did learn how to use a treadle sewing machine -- mainly because they just fascinated me.
I did pretty well in typing and shorthand. I found shorthand easy, but don't know why. I think it was because it seemed like a secret language to me. Guess in a way it was, but the truth was that I think it was sort of on its way out -- just not quite yet there. My typing actually improved over the years -- I only just passed in school I think -- I still to this day am not good with numbers -- and that was what through me. Later when I was working I tested out at about a 100 or so. Never actually used it much in anytime I had -- but I had bought my own typewriter and so almost always typed letters to people that I wrote -- and that is what got me to be faster.
Looking at those skirts, clothes and shoes --- I think we were all just too, too cool. Can't imagine what girls today would think??????
Keep feeling better Anne !!!
Just as I was ready to do the quote this morning someone called me with some cat questions. I don't allot myself too much time so it was all spent on the phone. I'm late but won't be having to go to work again until Tues. or so. That is nice to have a few days off.
Blessings
Jackie

Oh Jackie the memories, I loved typing and I am so glad I learned how. My husband does the one finger peck. I thought shorthand was just ok for me. Did not excel in it. I loved home ec, we made the apron too!! LOL I loved art because I had a little talent, not as much as I would like. We had good cafeteria food and the boys were always trying to get the girl's leftovers. I was 5'5", weighed 120 and always thought I was fat. When I look at my year book not one person in my class was overweight. We just did not have as many ready to eat foods then. Mom cooked every night. I loved high school. I was very sick one time but convinced my mom I was better so I could go to school. I ended up throwing up in the hall way. They had me sit in the lobby while I waited for my mom to come get me and a guy I liked came down the hall way. He pointed at it and looked at me as if to say, is this yours? I shook my head no. I was so embarrassed.

Hows 120 WPM............that is why it drives me nuts when the posting slows.......i am in the next paragraph and the printing on the screen is like snail mail.............actually like it is doing right now..........
Loved typing since I was in 9th grade......and that was a hell of a long time ago...............

I took typing but not shorthand. And I still type around 100wpm. It drives my grown son nuts that my computer keyboard has lots of the letters worn off. So what? I know where they are and I like the action of this keyboard.
Anne - glad to hear your on the mend.

I'll bet you have a desk-top and not a smart-phone? Hah! It is so hard for me to text on my little cell phone.... I would rather email instead of text.
And SUZANNE! You threw UP? Oh God! I didn't do THAT one, but I passed out from fright one time waking off the stage.... I was just scared stiff.... We were having some kind of program, but I felt dizzy, so I tried to walk down the steps, and they ran to get me!
And ONE time, I was swinging on the play-ground? And another little girl walked in front of me, and I accidently kicked her in the eye, and I was SO scared, I left, and went home! I was just sobbing! I told my Mom what I did, and she took me back to school the next day.... You would think I killed her! WHAT A BLACK EYE she had! She was the Queen of the school with that thing! Ha! I was embarrassed ALSO!
Virginia Wafing.... I'll never forget her name.... even when I was 10!

Chevy - yup, only a desk top. And I have a plain old flip phone & I don't text. I don't mind being a dinosaur. In fact it's nice that I don't have things ringing for my attention every few minutes. I LOVE being disconnected from the grid.

I have a laptop, but only a flip phone. We also have a land line, as there is NO cell service where we live! Only use our cells some , when we are on vacation. I'd rather TALK to people than text anyway! Oh yes and I still take my pictures with FILM! One of the few in the Western World! Have 2 digitals but don't use them One day I won't be able to get film , or get it developed and I'll have to switch!

Bonnets! So can you take out that little "memory" card in your camera, and put it in your Printer? I do that, and it will transfer the pictures to my Picassa program, and then I have them, and can send or print them off!
Do they still sell film? Hah! I know they don't sell those cassette's anymore.... do they? I had a cassette player in my other car.... but THIS one just plays CD's....
I love our land-line also.... I got this little phone, and it is for emergency's.... and only pay $15 a month.... from Sprint.... But DD's thought we should be accessable every second of every day.... So I up-graded the phone, to do Texts.... $5 a month more! But I cancelled it, because no-body texted me, after raising hell about me not HAVING it! I pay 20 cents per text, of which I don't do, unless I HAVE to.... Ha!

Chevy....I LOVE that quilt. What great memories are displayed on it! I wish I was more creative.
It's cool and brisk here today so I did several jobs that needed to be done inside. I spnt quite a bit of time with the gal at the Susan G. Komen headquarters as we set up the date and went through the materials for our Golf Rally for the Cure. It's time to get started on that again. There is so much work to put in to run a good event but we have made quite a bit of money for our cause so I keep plugging away at it.
I never took home economics but I learned the cooking and sewing in 4-H and from my grandmother. I can cook comfort foods but I'm no gourmet cook! I just get tired of fixing the same ol' things. I guess I should search the Internet for some new recipes to try. Tonight I am not cooking. Dave is golfing in his golf league and will eat at the club so I'm going into town to run some errands and will pick up something while I'm in there.
Anne...glad to hear that you're still feeling better each day!

I skipped shorthand due to lack of interest but I'm grateful for the typing skills I learned in high school that are so good, I can type about as fast as a person can talk and take notes verbatim. EXCEPT if I have to type a number. In high school I did something I've regretted for 50 years. I cheated on learning the numbers. I just couldn't seem to get into my head which finger went where so I peaked. Oh I wasn't hopeless...I could still figure it out but I had to take extra time to think and that slowed down my overall typing rate. Training to be an accountant, I used an adding machine so didn't have to rely on a typewriter. Don't know why I have fast fingers. I used to practice my 10-key calculator skills by copying pages from the telephone book. There was almost never a mistake. So now I never use the top computer keys for numbers. I use the 10-key style numbers on the side of the keyboard. I confess, I still have to peak if I need to type @, $,*, etc.

Yes, Chevy I threw up. I was so sick and should have stayed at home but I had already been out 4 days and I just knew I was better. My mom kept saying you need to stay home another day but I convinced I was so much better. I have a smart phone and I do text but only because my husband is the type to keep up with technology. If it wasn't for him I probably would still have my flip phone. LOVED IT! I did not understand people texting at first. Just could not figure out why anyone would rather text. Now I text all the time. So many times I want to text one line to someone to find out something, like what time we are meeting for dinner. My kids text I love you mom. I like those. I also take pictures with it all the time. I was at Hobby Lobby and they were advetising painting classes so I took a picture of the poster. I take pictures of recipes and have them when I am at the grocery store. My husband took a picture of the bag of grapefruits this morning to see if that is the kind I wanted. I kind of like it now as I discover it uses but I miss my land phone.

We have smart phones and I do text more than phone because so many people prefer texts. It's also handy to be able to check e-mail, facebook and bc.org on the phone when I'm sitting in a waiting room and have time to kill. Plus my phone has a good navigation program. But now my new Prius has the gps so the phone gps is overkill. My dh can't have too many gadgets and he's always ready for the newest technology.
He just bought a printer that I can activate from my laptop in the living room. When I give a print command, the printer--in another room--starts printing out the document. It's really convenient. I used to have to carry the laptop into the office and connect it with a cable. Now I can just sit on my derriere!
I was on a business track in high school. Skipped college prep courses like chemistry and physics and took shorthand and bookkeeping. Then I won a scholarship to college. So I never worked as a secretary and did not use the shorthand. The typing skill came in handy and also the bookkeeping for personal record keeping. I found chemistry difficult in college and also struggled a bit with geometry. Chemistry I (one) was my only C grade. To keep my scholarship I was required to maintain a B average. Looking back, it's comical how little the scholarship was worth. It supported me through 4 yrs. of college and it wouldn't pay for a semester at the same college now.
I still think saddle oxfords are cute and penny loafers, too. The full skirts and starched underskirts were ridiculous, though. My sister and I sewed our skirts and put 3 yards of material in them. What a pain to iron!
Any Dr. Oz fans?

Chevy...love love love your quilt!
I also love the Home Ec picture. Glad I was able to experience that...that and those driving simulators in the portables.

Thanks you guys, for all the compliments.... I loved making them.....
We had driving class, only we took a real car out! A stick-shift.... Ha! Did they even make automatics in 1955? I got rid of m 99 Chevy Prizm stick-shift, and I was sooooooooooo glad! I HATED having to stop on a hill, and using the clutch AND the brake to hold yourself there! We were taught to do that, so we wouldn't roll backwards.
Carole I didn't like Math at all.... never mind anything more advanced than that! I didn't like those story problems.... I LOVED English, creative-writing, Home Ec. and the typing class! Even History, but not Math....
