It takes more courage to reveal insecurities than to hide them,
more strength to relate to people than to dominate them,
more "manhood" to abide by thought-out principles rather
than blind reflex. Toughness is in the soul and spirit,
not in muscles and an immature mind.

So many on the right are never going to give up on that lie, even knowing it is a lie. Then again, many R's do now believe it, or so they say in the polls that are taken. I veer between thinking they really do believe it and the other side of having to answer a poll question that way so they can " stick " with their poor choices and hope to make it through their next election.

They have short-changed themselves by backing the orange one and now have cut off their power of choice. I have hope that some of the transparency of what they are doing will stay in sight. I do think Democrats need to get a lot tougher but I admit I don't know how things work in Washington -- all the calculations etc. It is hard to get the straight story from most of the media -- and so I'm going to have to stick with Heather Cox Richardson.

There is no physician like cheerful thought for dissipating the ills of the body; there is no comforter to compare with good will for dispersing the shadows of grief and sorrow. To live continually in thoughts of ill will, cynicism, suspicion, and envy, is to be confined in a self-made prison hole. But to think well of all, to be cheerful with all, to patiently learn to find the good in all—such unselfish thoughts are the very portals of happiness; and to dwell day by day in thoughts of peace toward every creature will bring abounding peace to their possessor. -James Allen

Alice, post away. Divine, I loved the one about God-given rights to die of horrid diseases. That was so spot-on. I recall having rheumatic fever when I was 8 yrs. old. It settled in the knee joints but my parents were terrified I had polio. I'll never forget their faces as the Dr. examined me. Raw fear and dread. Like you Ruth, it is such a total downer that so many people ( how much is purely party ) are just treating this issue like covid is a hoax or very un-serious. We are extremely close to the 700 million mark so just how many have to die before you will believe.

It is so often hard to be proud of my American heritage when a large group of her people are acting so heathen towards truth as known.

I remember my mom telling me about the polio vaccine which was given as a shot before the sugar cube method was developed. Her oldest child, my brother, woke up the day after getting the shot and his shot arm was so painful he could not use it. Mom said her heart was in her throat all day, she was worried sick that her firstborn may have contracted polio somehow thru the vaccine. The following day, brother woke up just fine.

My mom was one of the most practical of people and full of common sense. She made sure all seven of her kids got the vaccines available to them, lots of trips to the health dept. One of my sisters was a little tyrant (not all of that's worn off). She had a coat with ties as well as buttons down the front of her coat. While she waited to be next in line for her shots, she double and tripled knotted every single one of those ties. My mom and the nurse had to spend a lot of time undoing them to get the coat off. What a little stinker.

Trishyla, I think I read in another post where you had measles in the eyes. My four older siblings had measles when I was an infant, before the vaccine came out, and I got the measles, too. I'm not sure if they were in the eyes, but I was the only one of us seven kids that ended up needing glasses at a young age. I always thought having measles so young contributed to bad eyesight.

*How West Virginia became a Covid-19 disaster*

Analysis by Harry Enten, CNN. September 26, 2021

The coronavirus pandemic unfortunately has been dominated by politics. We first saw it with the pushback on mask wearing. Today, it continues with who and who will not get vaccinated.

The impact of this political divide is no clearer than in West Virginia. This comes as the pandemic rips through the Mountaineer State.

West Virginia had been a success story for vaccinations. Back in early March, West Virginia ranked in the top four in terms of the adult population that was vaccinated. The state and Gov. Jim Justice received widespread praise for its vaccine rollout.

      >>> But now, West Virginia ranks last in the country for the percentage of the adult population that is fully vaccinated. Just 48% of adults are fully vaccinated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This makes West Virginia the only state in the country where less than half the adult population is fully vaccinated.

The slowness with which West Virginians have taken up the vaccine comes despite a governor who has been begging people to get it. Although Justice has not yet called for a vaccine mandate, he's done basically everything else. He had memorable press conferences and offered prizes to try to up the vaccination rate in his state.

The problem is that Justice has been overwhelmed by the demographic and political fundamentals that have plagued the vaccination effort throughout the country. Once vaccines became more plentiful nationally, it became less about how good states (and leadership) were at giving out vaccines and more about whether people were willing to take them.

It turns out that there haven't been that many adults who have been willing to in the Mountaineer State.

          >>> The issue starts with politics. West Virginia is one of the most Republican states in the country. Former President Donald Trump won the state by nearly 40 points in 2020. The only state that he won by more was Wyoming, which ranks in the bottom three for adult vaccination as well.

The correlation between the vaccination rates in states and how those states voted in the 2020 election has only become stronger over time. Georgia, a state President Joe Biden barely won, is the lone state that went blue in 2020 that is in the bottom 15 for adult vaccinations.

Indeed, even Trump's appeals on the vaccine haven't worked. He encouraged (not to the same level as Justice) people to get a Covid-19 vaccine. Trump was met with boos.

          >>> Less noted is that education rates have also been highly correlated with vaccination rates. Indeed, the states in the top 25 for college-educated adults have on average about 10 points more of their adult population vaccinated compared to the states in the bottom 25 for college-educated adults.

West Virginia has fewer adults with a college degree than any state in the nation.

Perhaps more unbelievably, the low rate of vaccination has continued in September. A lower portion of the Mountaineer State's adult population has gotten their first Covid-19 dose this month than any other state in the nation.

This is in spite of how bad the coronavirus situation is in West Virginia right now. States with high infection rates tend to see an uptick in their vaccinations.

There are 95 new daily cases per 100,000 residents on the weekly average in West Virginia. Alaska is the one state with more cases, and it's in the top half for new adult vaccinations this month.

          >>> West Virginia also is the worst in the country in current hospitalizations. Second is Kentucky, which is in the top five for new adult vaccinations this month.

          >>> West Virginia also has the third most deaths over the last week controlling for population size. The two states with a higher death rate (Alabama and Florida) are in the top half for new vaccinations.

What Justice and West Virginia are teaching us is that politics is trumping public health, even when things are truly dire.

That doesn't mean that leaders can't try to move the electorate. It's just that you can't make certain people do what they don't want to do, no matter how bad things get.

Poor WV. At the beginning of the pandemic, there were the last state to actually have a case of Covid19 in their state. And then they were way ahead of getting their population vaccinated. But all that optimism slowly petered out.

The interesting thing is the local news ran a story two days ago about Marshall County in WV. This includes the cities of Wheeling and Moundsville. They had a Covid booster shot clinic this week with a supply of 500 shots. It was so successful, they closed early because they used every single one of them. The guy in charge of it (not sure what his title is) was very happily surprised by the turnout. (So am I).

There was a Covid booster shot clinic here in Ohio in the next county over from mine, and they had a terrific turn out for it, too. We're talking former guy territory, so the turn out seems promising (to an extent).

Once there are more people getting the booster, how will we see the vaccinated pulling away from the unvaccinated in terms of getting Covid. Right now, some vaccinated are getting break thru cases and even tho they overall have less severe symptoms, the unvaxxed still claim, well, they claim all kinds of shit. But I'm thinking the evidence will be more stark showing the disparity between unvaxxed and triple vaxxed. On the other hand, I'm also hoping the booster lessens the Covid load for all. It remains to be seen how it all unfolds.

I'm wondering when Moderna will get FDA approval. I heard soon. That's what dh and I got. I was able to get a booster, and dh, ds and his girlfriend all plan on getting the booster as soon as its available to them.

My son is now fully vaccinated. The second shot did give him fever and chills for about 24hours. I told him to just take some ibuprofen. He was fine. I hope he passed this info on to his buddies in the group text where the one guy was complaining that ever since he was vaccinated, he has to lay a certain way at night because his "lungs hurt". I told him to tell that guy to go to the doctor.

The dems are starting to piss me off. They play like we need to be all normal, while the repubs are playing warfare. Get what you want while you can! And while I'm at it, Justice Breyer needs to retire so we don't have yet another R on the bench! grrrrr.

P.S. Glad your son got his vaccination Home Mom. I hope a lot of his friends will listen to you/him. Was it Divine ?? who put in the piece of the young man ( college age ) who said he didn't need the shot because he was so healthy and then got covid and died. It seems to be like cancer -- no one can predict who will live or die or have long term health problems.

Part of them not very bright at all, some determined to be Trumplicans to the max and some just greedy and power hungry. The point being -- one way or the other they are all hurting everyone else and in some cases even themselves. Still, I'm so tired of them making it so difficult for good people who try that I'm past the point of caring much about them. I want to ( but I won't til' it's safe ) walk around w/o a mask on and talk to people again in groups. I want to feel safe when I'm out and about and not worry that one slip and I might have an issue. Above all, I'd like to not have to worry on the occasional day when I maybe don't feel good that it means something else other than I didn't sleep well or ate food that didn't agree.
