Fasting and chemo
I have to do an urgent chemo, Caelyx ( I will explain more in the "metastasis to liver" section).
I have an urgent question: I read many studies that state it is better to fast before and after chemo. Is that correct?
Thank you

hi @amel_83 ,
I am not knowledgeable enough to recommend or not fasting, but I have been interested in the topic for a while. Indeed, there are several study reports which indicated that fasting helps reduce side effects of chemotherapy. Still, it is not a mainstream practice; not everyone can tolerate it and malnutrition is a concern.
I tried to fast when I was on chemo back in 2019, but I could not sustain it, especially with weekly taxol. Looking back, I think that perhaps it would be easier for me if I followed fasting mimicking diet (Dr. Longo research).
Hope other, more knowledgeable members will chime in soon.

Thank you for your answer, I will look online more deeply to.
I will do the chemo once every 28 days, so I may will be able to handle it.

I'm using the fast mimicking diet proposed by Valter Longo. Roughly 750 calories/day derived from vegetables with a very small amount of protein from nuts. I begin 3 days before each chemo and continue for 5 days.
I'm doing very well for someone on TCHP chemo. My breast tumor shrank by 4cm after the first treatment. My side effects were extremely mild for rounds 1, 2 and 3. Round 4 brought mild neuropathy (2 toes) and tinnitus in my R ear. I'm still working 40+ hrs/week and have never thrown up Fatigue is common on post-chemo day 2-5, but is manageable the rest of the time
I won't lie- it's hard! I'm lucky to have help with food prep, and doubt I would have succeeded without it.
I realize this is an old post, and I'm sorry I couldn't share in time to help the original poster. I'm hoping it helps anyone who searches for these terms down the line.
Warmly,
CMN
