For those w/ multiple lumpectomies

Hello,

I was wondering how many of us have had multiple lumpectomies & re-excisions and what the outcomes were for each of us. Here's my story:

*6/20/25: 1st lumpectomy for stage 2A, hormone +, HER2- IDC on left breast. Margins came back + for IDC & DCIS.

*7/7/25: 2nd lumpectomy w/ re-excision. Margins + for DCIS,

*9/8: planned for 3rd surgery (undecided whether it will be 3rd and last re-excision w/ reconstruction, or bilateral masectomy.

It soundsl like they are hoping to do one last chance at re-excision and do reconstruction at that time. I'm not sure if the margins come back +, then the reconstruction will be for nothing as they will have to do a masectomy or how radiation will effect the results. Any insight anyone has I would love!

Thank you all!

@coleitt - Hi, and welcome to the community. It sounds like you've been through a lot in a short time, and it's completely normal to have questions right now.

We know how stressful it can be when margins remain unclear and you're trying to plan for what’s next. Others here have been through similar situations, and hopefully you'll hear from them soon. For now, here are some pages from our main site that you may find interesting:

I was diagnosed with DCIS in early April. Had a partial mastectomy, had to have a re excision and then had to decide if I wanted to try a third time or have a mastectomy. I opted for a bilateral because it would eliminate having to do radiation. I had surgery on 7/8, got path report and cancer was found in Sentinel lymph node and DCIS was found in the “good” breast. I’m now looking at having to do radiation and possibly chemotherapy. As difficult as this has been, I’m so glad I went ahead and had the mastectomy rather than try to get the margins a 3rd time. If you have any questions please reach out, and good luck!

Thank you so much for your response! I have since learned that they can’t do reconstruction with a third lumpectomy (because it won’t turn out well after radiation) so I am also deciding on a bilateral mastectomy as I have a strong feeling they won’t be able to get clean margins a third time and I wouldn’t be surprised if there was DCIS on my other breast too because of how the MRI results looked. Did you have an onco-dx result? Any news on whether you need chemo? And what stage are you considered being DCIS with lymph node involvement ?? I’m so sorry you’re going through all these ups and downs too.
