I've been to the jack-o-lantern blaze in NY. It was amazing. I don't remember all of the details. I still have pictures on my phone too!

I like pumpkins and enjoy seeing a big collection of them in their natural state, even on a farmer's lawn. The supermarkets here have nice big ones for what seems like a reasonable price. I've been tempted to buy a couple but haven't. When I did buy one some years back and set it by the front door, I forgot about it and it rotted in place. A yucky mess. If I had deer nearby like Betrayal, it would seem more worthwhile.

We've had some light rain today. It was so nice to see water coming from the sky. I'm hoping for more. The dampness must be heavenly for the poor shrubs and trees suffering from drought.

Hope your SO's colonoscopy is reassuring, Cindy. I had two with no polyps and decided not to have any more.

I baked a loaf of whole grain bread with Einkorn ancient grain flour this morning. It wouldn't win a prize at the state fair but I will enjoy a slice for breakfast toast each day and stop buying bread for that purpose. We both rarely eat sandwiches now.

    Happy weekend to all.

No rain here for a few more days anyway. It’s super sunny and all of 46.

Robot vacuum just stopped. Sometimes it indicates via a sound that it’s done, but continues on away from the docking station. I’ve gone and picked it up before, just to get rid of the constant white noise it produces.

Laundry awaits me, but not much on the agenda for today. I could pack a suitcase full of summer clothes, things I know I won’t be wearing here, but will be taking to FL. I’ll see what the day brings.

Tonight I’m taking my niece to an Autumn Glow festival. I think it’s along the lines of Chinese lanterns but more than just lanterns. HA! I’ll take pictures, I think easier to see than to verbalize. It will get us out for 2 hours, drive there & walking around, and I enjoy her company.

    Have a good day!

We are in Ft. Lauderdale to pick up passengers for next part of Cruise. While we were at breakfast, it poured rain to the point we could not see out of the windows. About 20 minutes later, it was full sun. Glad to see it..

We had to disembark to "go through customs " and had to report to theater to do so. We waited and waited while they tried to track diwn those who decided they didn't want to disembark as ordered. Then they finally herd us off, walk through facial screening for the second time and then proceed to make us stand in line for 40 minutes while they locate the missing 4. When they finally showed, they had to walk past 4 lines of booing passengers. True walk of shame, but no seeming remorse on their part for holding up so many of us. Told to bring passports as well as ship key card. No one looked at them and we did not go through customs!

There are other ships in port from Celebrity, Princess and Royal Caribbean as well as the Rotterdam. I could not travel on those ships; just too many people on them.

We,were facial screened for the third time when we returned to the ship. We headed to the Lido for burgers from the Dive-in. This is the first I've had this cruise. They are good and the fries are delicious. I seldom eat fries so I do enjoy these.

We set sail for Turks and Caicos at 3:30. Looking forward to another week on the ship.

Hope everyone has a great day. Waving "hi" to everyone.

Storm Melissa has canceled outstrip in Turks and Caicos. We had an excursion planned, but will receive a refund. Proceeding directly to Puerto Rico where our excursion had previously been canceled by the provider. They are offering substitutes, but had done them on a prior trip. So we'll just walk around. The last time we were here it was after the hurricane and so many of the shops were closed. It will be interesting to see if they have returned.

The passengers on boarded today were griping about missing Turks and Caicos and blaming the Captain. Thus is a week long trip forbtgem so I can understand from that person I active, but when you book a cruise during hurricane season, there are bound to be itinerary changes. We ended up sailing late because one passenger decided to cancel after boarding. Really inconsiderate since it delayed sailing for the rest of us.

betrayal - glad the cruiseline made the decision to skip Turks & Caicos. Otherwise, the forecasted trajectory for Hurricane Melissa would mean you would be sailing through the hurricane. I get that some folks are disappointed but they would be far more upset if they sailed through the storm. Our December cruise ends in San Juan so we are spending a night in SJ as we’ve never been there. Plan to walk through the old town and visit the fortresses.

Cindy - the Halloween pictures are great. A few years back we went to a Halloween display at the Botanical Gardens which was very disappointing. It was simply orange balloons with drawings.

    Wishing all a good week.

Sunny today as we travel towards Puerto Rico..It seems they moved up the Caribbean brunch to today. We so enjoyed the last one, we went again. The desert was hummingbird cake which us absolutely delicious. I can't remember having had it before this cruise and fully intend to make it at home.

I always made banana nut bread to take to our level meetings when I worked. I would freeze brown bananas so I always had a ready supply. I would also make multiple loaves at a time and freeze them. The recipe I have is from a former coworker who died very young from BC. I always thought of her when I made them. I haven't baked much since I retired, but intend to get back to it. Funny that I was so busy then, but still found time to bake, but now I am less busy and I seem to have no time.

We arrive in Puerto Rico this evening and won't depart until tomorrow evening. We received an invitation to a wine tasting this afternoon. Last evening we were invited to a private captain and officers cocktail party forbthose having 3 star or above status. It was nice.

Hope everyone has a great day and waving "hi" to everyone.

loving all the photos everyone! It’s been sooo rainy here that I’ve decided to not d3corate. At all. Well at work I will. I’m working Halloween and going to dress up as a Ravenclaw. I got the cape at a second hand shop a few years ago for a steal of a deal. Tried on my white shirt and it still fits. Phew. I have a scarf, tie, and a wand. I will post a photo when I’m dressed up. Lol. Two procedures I’m waiting on. Oh three. How can I forget that CT scan of my lungs That still hasn’t happened. Phoning the cancer centre today to squawk.
apparently it’s international black cat day. Ziggy wants to join in so here’s a few photos of him. Also a comic for the season.

Autumn Glow - it was very nice! Super cold as it’s next to the Mohawk River. We enjoyed strolling and seeing it all.

    IMG_2281.jpeg IMG_2289.jpeg

My grandniece in the middle of it, but hard to see.

    IMG_2296.jpeg

There was a giant bounce platform, big circle swings that were light up, as well as 2 seesaws. But alas, we’re too old for any of that. A magician show, a few booths selling items, cotton candy shaped like picachu (spelling?) and other type animals. Food was limited to chicken and dumplings. They could have had so much more grab and go foods but didn’t.

It’s one of those things that is very nice to see, but I don’t think I’d need to go back - unless grandkids were in town.

Gf dh was released from the hospital tonight. Fingers crossed he stays home!

My cousin stopped by tonight and I had a new bathroom faucet installed. You don’t know how bad your old one was until the feel of the smooth ease of turning on the new faucet. Haha. We leave in 9 days. I’ll forget all about it until we’re back in May and it will be new again.

SO was seen by the PA at the gastroenterologist office today. They got him in for the colonoscopy on Wednesday at 7 AM. But you have to be there at 6 AM. She said no one wants that appointment. He has to drink prep at 5 pm, 1 am, 4 am! Now we know why no one wants it. For him to get in before we leave, he had to accept it.

That’s it. It’s 39 right now, going down to 32 overnight. Meaning the hill towns around us will definitely be below freezing.

Betrayal, our vacation spot for 10+ years was Puerto Rico. We’ve stayed all over the island. If you like coffee, PR has some great ones. Alto Vera is one I remember- you can grab it in any grocery store. Also, we’d grab souvenirs- tee shirts, etc, at Walgreens. And don’t forget the RUM! Don Q has a tasting right down by where the cruise ships come in. There is a brand rated as one of the top sipping rums in the world, the name escapes me but if you ask at a liquor store they’d know it. We’re hoping to be spending a week there in December for our 30th anniversary of the day we met. Love it there.

    Stay warm & be well.

Cindy - interesting pictures. Our botanical garden and zoo all do special Christmas lights but like you, I've been there, done that.

Golf course opened this week but will be extra walking for a few weeks. I've really been lazy since it's been closed so it could be a very interesting morning. Weather is perfect however so I will give it a try. Mutz goes to the vet in the afternoon. Always a challenge although we have a wonderful, gentle vet.

This week's question for the Storybook is about our mothers - Ken's Mom and I were definitely on different wave lengths so I will really have to think about this. Sadly, DD wasn't close to either of her grandmothers. I blame them. They definitely showed preference for their biological grandchildren over their adopted ones.

Ken's watching the series. He's with you, CanaryCat.

Good morning. I have enjoyed reading the 87 posts that I have missed. I am heading back to NC to get a mini split heating and air conditioning. I need the heading. My cabin stays cool. I need to get the crawl space cleaned up and new insulation. I have someone coming the same day as the heating & a/c. I want to get a couple of estimates on that. I would like to get it done before it gets any cooler. Speaking of cooler. I need some advice on "Winterizing" I know I am supposed to turn the water off and drain the hot water heater, but what about if I am coming back in a couple of weeks? The water heater is in a utility room without heat or air. The washer and dryer are out there as well. I think the previous owner had a heat lamp out there. (it is still out there, but I haven't turned it on). So how can I safely leave the house and not come back to a broken pipe? I am 90% a Florida girl. LOL

Carole, I would love to have thick hair. I am envious

Betrayal, I love the pictures. It does take me down memory lane. My late DH and I had many wonderful trips to Central America and the Caribbean.

Harley07 - I don't remember what I was going to comment on, probably the protests… Sine DH died I avoid politics. I hadn't heard of a pro-king rally. I didn't know there was one??? Wow. I guess I stay in a void.

Cindy, good luck on your trip South. Maybe you can give me some clues on "Winterizing"

  • cindyny
    cindyny Posts: 1,572

Petite, we leave the heat on at 52 degrees for the duration while we’re gone. I turn the circuit breaker off to the water heater but I don’t drain anything. Ask your neighbors, they’d know more than me about returning in a few weeks. I know there are electric heating wires you can wrap a pipe in but I’m unsure if they’d be any help. Once you turn off the water heater and drain it, it will be a long time to fill & heat it back up.

Also I unplug anything that could be damaged by a power surge - except main tv w cable box, it requires updates so they say to leave it. I take batteries out of remotes. I set timers on an enclosed front porch light, and kitchen light over my sink. But that’s to make it look like someone is still here. Good luck!

I made it to the orthotic check, she made an adjustment. As I got out of my car I saw it was 10:17. Then I wondered was my appointment at 10:30, or was I supposed to leave my house at 10:30. Yup, turns out my appointment was for 11! No one was there and she took me.

Then we were back out at 12:30 for the dermatologist appointment. I got something non cancerous froze/burnt off my back. I can’t remember the name, but they can peel off, I just wanted it gone. SO was all good. We’re booked together again for next October.

I put in a new strike plate on our back porch door today. I giggle because I should have pre drilled the holes for the screws but didn’t, and one was in wonky I couldn’t get it out, and only in a tad further - isn’t a pretty installation but the door closes tightly and with 4 screws in the larger strike plate, I feel the door is more secure. At least I think so!

SO is prepping for his colonoscopy. I’m trying not to eat in front of him. We’ll be up at 5 AM, he’s supposed to to arrive at 6 AM. I’ll have to get out to start the car asap when we wake up, forecast is frost and fog.

    Have a great night!

PS to Petite - I don’t unplug anything but electronics. I don’t empty the refrigerator, it stays plugged in. And other things I turn off circuit breakers - stove, dryer. But again - we leave heat on the whole time at 52. If in tracking weather here in NY I see some startling lows, I use our WiFi thermostat to turn it up to 55 or higher.

cundyny, most likely an actinic keratosis lesion. Quite common as we age and they can be unsightly. Good luck to SO with colonoscopy. I am glad to have finally timed out on having them. In a 2 year period, I had to do appreciate 5 times and it gets old fast.

petite1, I like how you are preparing your new cabin for more seasonal usage. I have nothing to offer as far as winterizing it, but agree with cindyny about the water heater. Can your neighbors offer any suggestions?

Taco, glad you are getting back to golf.

Carole, you certainly have been ambitious with gardening. I bet it looks great.

Canaryca t, fingers crossed that these procedures find nothing of concern.

harley07, DH has signed us up for a cruise ofbtge Norwegian fjords and the Arctic circle in 2027. It will be in the fall so hoping we can see the Northern lights.

Carlene, the jewelry manager, on our Brazil cruise has transferred to this ship. We became friends so it is good to seen her again.

We arrived early in San Juan tonight. We are not going ashore until tomorrow though. I will look at some of the shops/items you mentioned cindy. We did buy coffee in Guatemala and Costa Rica as gifts, but we'll see if we can find what you recommended.

Listening to classical musical played by a husband and wife. She plays.the.piano and he the cello. On the first leg of our cruise, it was 2 women from Ukraine. One played the piano and the other a violin. So far both groups have been spectacular. First set tonight was French composers and this second set is movie theme songs.

Hope everyone had a great day..Waving "hi" to everyone.

Petite, what a great idea purchasing the cabin has turned out to be for you. There are two kinds of winterizing. One is the kind we do with our rv in MN. Winterize to leave for the duration of cold weather. We drain the water and run anti-freeze liquid into the pipes. Drain the water from the icemaker. You're wanting to protect your cabin from freezing weather while still using it. I agree with those who advised you to talk to neighbors. Also the local hardware store can probably give you information.

Cindy, hoping for good report from the colonoscopy.

It's sunny this morning and my laptop says 49 degrees outside.

Taco, I played 9 holes of golf yesterday. The course looked really nice after a good rain.

I plan to go to senior exercise at ll:30.

    Hi to all.

I am following along. I need new orthotics. Those who wear them, how long before you need new ones? This has been two years, and I am back to wearing an ankle brace to get me through the time necessary for my appointment. That is in the city on the third, I will also have the cast sut off and a custom splint for my right hand.

Somehow I have gotten French as well as anglas in my word correct.

Still eager to get some sewing done. I got the coolest knives for cooking ..

Amazon.com: Right Angle Knife 2-Pack – Ergonomic L Shaped Knives with Serrated & Chopping Blades, Adaptive Kitchen Tools for Arthritis : Health & Household Tried the serrated one with my 100% whole wheat bread, but it didn't work. Will try a loaf of 33% ww.

Made some dill pickle flavored potato soup yesterday, and it is as good as ever.

Had my eyes checked this morning, and I am right on the line with cataracts. Next year they should be ready to pop.

Chris, my orthotics last 1-2 years at max. The body weight on them compresses them, sometimes sooner or later. This is what a script had to say for mine to be covered between Medicare and my secondary: One pair customer foot orthotics; coding: 247.89. This is my first time not having to pay for them. Here they’re up to $520, includes the orthotics and as many visits necessary.

At our dermatology appointment yesterday the dr noted my one toenail is coming off. I’ve never lost a nail. This is from the surgery on toes next to it. He says the new nail is under it and it will peel off eventually.

This morning we were up at 5:15 AM; to the gastro office before 6 AM. I went in for the sign in and left for the procedure. We’re about 5-7 minutes away. I picked him up by 8:10. They found 4 polyps, sessile, under 4mm - believed to be benign, and removed them. Follow-up in 3 years for surveillance. Although his son, a gastroenterologist said newer protocol is 5-7 years; he’ll do it again in 3.

I took a “nap” for an additional hour around 9:30; total sleep 4 hrs. SO is in bed now, I don’t think he slept more than an hour last night.

I’ve got a chill. House feels cold but isn’t. It’s probably from lack of sleep. I’m fully dressed, with my fuzzy robe on too - which lets me feel comfortable.

Let’s go JAY’s!! Last night was good.

OK. So now I just need to watch for the warning signs, rather than until I am in a world of pain from my hands to my toes. A bit much at once. I know they are expensive, and thankful my insurance pays for them. A bad sprain from thirty years ago, plus chemo, and probably a nerve lost in knee replacement.

Sandy, sad state of affairs in your neighborhood. ICE actions remind me of past roundups for ethnicity. I would not blame your cleaners if they laid low even if they have no need to.

Sorry to read about your son and his wife. Hope you can help him as well as deal with your own chaos. You have really been through the ringer since the fire. I hope once you are back in your own home that you can find some peace. I know you still have much to deal with there, but there is something comforting about familiar surroundings.

We are in San Juan. More later.

Sandy, I'm also sorry to hear about your son's breakup. But glad for you that you're on the verge of being "back at home."

We have missed you on the What's for Dinner? forum but understand why you're too busy to post there.

It must be chilling to have ICE in operation in your neighborhood rather than just read articles and see coverage on tv.

I have had a pleasant day. My exercise class was great. A food trailer outside the YMCA was selling barbecue today so I called dh to ask if he'd like barbecue for lunch. He said he would so I bought him a meal with brisket chili and sides he likes, coleslaw and baked beans. I had the brisket chili, which was full of chunks of barbecued brisket and was very good. Brisket is my favorite barbecue meat, with chicken a close second.

Hope everyone else had a good Wednesday.
