Sand cherry is a variety of shrub cherry that grows well in sandy areas. The fruit is edible raw, but has a bit of a gritty texture that isn't present after being cooked. The flavor is kind of in-between cherry and grape. My sand cherry bush used to give a great harvest, but it doesn't fruit nearly as much as it used to - it might be aging out. But I had some frozen from a previous season.
