Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Hump Day! I am sad to see the announcements of Dolly Parton's death. I think of her as being ageless, so it was more of surprise than I expected. The world has lost a great person.

    Jolene's Bittersweet Cocktail

    Ingredients

    • 1¾ oz Scotch Whisky The original recipe calls for Aberfeldy 12, a Highlands single malt. If you have such a single malt use it, otherwise a blended Scotch will still work well.
    • ¾ oz Fresh lemon juice
    • ⅓ oz Honey-ginger syrup
    • 1 tsp Yellow Chartreuse
    • 1 tsp Amaro Montenegro
    • ⅓ oz Mezcal
    • Garnish: orange twist

    Instructions

    • Add all ingredients except Mezcal to your trusty mixing glass.
    • Add ice and stir to chill.
    • Strain into an Old Fashioned glass with ice, preferably a single, large cube.
    • Float Mezcal on top.
    • Express twist and add to glass.
    • Pour in the direction of your liver.

Bought a second skeleton parts in a bag yesterday. Went searching in one of the bins of decorations for the skeleton parts i already had, found all but one piece which probably got put in a different bin when we were packing for moving out here. So we will use the new one after i get the pieces ready for hanging while we try to locate the missing piece. If I am lucky to find this Halloween, I will use both and draped lights around them. The hard part of prepping the pieces for hanging is how to prep the skull piece, running string or yarn through one side to the other is going to be a pain.

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy TGIF Day. Just got word that Mom is being moved on Tuesday next week to the memory care unit. They have figured out what of her things will fit in the new room, and will store the rest for $5 a day until the movers can pick it up to take it to the storage unit. Last move the time between the move and the movers' availability was a couple of weeks. I've noticed a pattern with Mom's moves: first move right around Halloween. Second move right before Thanksgiving. Third move right around the 4th of July. Fourth move right after Labor Day. Anyone want to start a pool on what holiday the next move come on?

mOmmy--what are your skeleton pieces made of? Most plastics will melt at relatively low temps, you can heat up a nail in a candle and melt/poke it through to make holes for the string or yarn. Or maybe glue the yarn to the skull? Please show us a pic when you get it set up. Back when I enjoyed holiday decorating I loved Halloween.

thr skeleton pieces are hollow plastic. Most of the new pieces have holes in them where it will be easy to string, just the skull piece is going to be the pain.

Went to storge yesterday and looked for the missing piece from my first skeleton I had from Connecticut. Not there so I figure its either in the shed on our property or in a bin up here that I haven't looked in yet. Anywho, took our ac back to storage yesterday as its been very season temps here. Figure I will work on the skeleton today or tomorrow when I have a chance.

On top of this, dealing with keeping tabs on mom since she had surgery on Thursday for the cataract in her right eye. Checked on her this morning and she had been starting to get vision back already as of last night. Has to have the other one done coming up on this coming Thursday. That one won't be as bad as the right one.

August was a blur for tick magnet me. The deer finally got me! ☹️

I was admitted to the hospital because I had a serious infection from tick-borne illnesses (septic shock from babesiosis and Lyme disease).

I returned home taking 3 medicines.

    No appetite. 😜

    I lost 22LBS during August.

The last dose of medicine was on August 30th.

    My appetite has returned. 😋

Mom's surgery for the cataract in her left eye is today. Thankfully its not as bad as the right one was, which her vision is returning really good from what she says. Talked to her last night and she was doing a little knitting to stay calm for today. My stepdad said that she told him that she can see individual leaves on trees, not some big old blur. She is knitting some, which her doctor told her will help her. So far very few mistakes when she knits which is better than it was pre-surgery. So now today is wait for the news from my stepdad on how everything went. Probably won't call her until tomorrow, I want to give her time to rest up from this surgery.

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Thirsty Thursday! Got Mom moved from the apartment to her new room. Surprisingly, almost everything she had in the apartment fits in the new room. The only things going to storage are a desk and one box of miscellaneous stuff. I brought home paper towels, paper plates, unopened boxes of cereal and crackers, unopened jars of jams and jellys, and 6 unopened cans of instant coffee. I also took home a ring that belonged to Dad and a few other sentimental trinkets. I still need to put up her paintings, and set up her bird feeder, but those can wait. I also got a call from the movers yesterday, they have an emergency move today so they will pick up the desk and box next week and the Birch Bay people are fine with that. Mom's doing better than I am with this move. She did complain about not liking being treated like a baby during meals. She does not like to be told what to do, how to do it or when to do it, but she needs that help to feed herself. That will smooth out once they get to know her and realize she needs to deconstruct her meals before she starts eating them. I did cue them in that she does better with a spoon than a fork, even if she does use both for most meals. Seeing her with a bib on is taking some getting used to as well. Anyway, I didn't have to get up and get on the road early to meet the movers today, which is a blessing. My knees and back are still talking to me rather loudly this ayem. Of course, I'm blaming that on the effect of a rainy day on arthritis, and not my being so generally out of shape that 2 days of steady work and movement wipes me out. My plan for today is extra pupper cuddles to make up for leaving them home alone 2 days in a row.

mOmmy--glad to hear your Mom is doing well after surgery. I've heard the second one is much easier than the first. Hope you find your missing skeleton piece soon!

Jazzy--Good for you! Love the worrier pose, it took me a couple of reads to catch on to what it actually said!

Teka---holy moly, you had quite the run with the tick-borne stuff! Glad you are home and on the mend. I was thinking Labor Day with this past Monday! Boy is my mind messed up.

mOmmy--saying a prayer for your Mom. Good to hear how well she is doing after the first one.

    Knitting Cocktail (Lavender–Vanilla Wool Twist)

    image.png

Takeaway: a soft, aromatic, lightly sweet cocktail built for slow sipping and cozy crafting.

    🌸 Ingredients
    • 2 oz vodka (or gin if you want a more botanical profile)
    • 1 oz vanilla liqueur or ½ oz vanilla syrup
    • ¾ oz fresh lemon juice
    • ½ oz lavender syrup
    • 2 oz sparkling water (lavender or plain)
    • Tiny pinch of edible glitter or a lavender sprig (optional but adorable)

    🍸 Method
    1. Fill a shaker with ice.
    2. Add vodka, vanilla, lemon, and lavender syrup.
    3. Shake until cold and slightly frothy.
    4. Strain into a chilled coupe or a short rocks glass.
    5. Top with sparkling water for a soft fizz.
    6. Garnish with a lavender sprig, a twist of lemon, or a tiny “yarn ball” made from a curled lemon peel.

    🧵 Flavor Notes
    • Lavender = the soft floral “knitting room” scent.
    • Vanilla = cozy sweater energy.
    • Lemon = brightness so it doesn’t get too sweet.
    • Sparkling water = keeps it light enough for an afternoon craft session.

✨ Variations (because creativity is part of the craft)
    • The Wooly Mule: Swap sparkling water for ginger beer.
    • The Cozy Cable: Add 1 oz cream or oat milk for a creamy, chai‑adjacent vibe.
    • The Yarn Stash: Replace vodka with elderflower liqueur for a floral-forward cocktail.

Happy Sunday morning to everyone. We had the Labor Day potluck yesterday. Labor Day marks the end of the summer season at the campground. Soon the trailer units will be winterized, boats will be removed from the lake and put in storage, docks will be taken out, also boat lifts. By the end of September, we will be returning home and resume living in a house. I will be ready for some house luxuries like a dishwasher!

  • a few years ago they said drink some wine, it’s good for your heart and now it’s don’t drink wine it’s a carcinogenic especially for breast cancer that is ER+.

Good grief. I am not a heavy drinker but may have 3-4 glasses of wine in a week.

Did this contribute to my diagnosis? Unwind they say, try to get out with friends and enjoy your life.

Can I have some wine without feeling guilty?

Mom's eyes are doing very well. Happy that she can see clearly again.

I had been panicking since July. Thought my good watch was gone. Was moving some stuff around in my closet and I found it in its box on the closet floor. I dang near had a breakdown over finding it! Had been planning on wearing it to my second cousin's wedding reception back in July but some how it went MIA as I was putting everything together for that day.

True, there are things that we can do that may reduce our risks of cancer or recurrences. But compared to all the crap in the air, water, food, and manufactured items that we have no control over, our lifestyle contributions to our risks pale in comparison.

Long-term stress has also been associated with increased risks of cancer, as well as a host of other systemic conditions. If a glass of wine reduces your cortisol and stress hormones, I think that benefit outweighs the increased risk of alcohol exposure. Moderation in all things.

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Hump Day! The weather here has taken the summer to fall turn. First frost advisory went up for overnight yesterday in the northern/higher elevation areas. Downright chilly this ayem. Both puppers crawled in under the duvet last night!

Carole--I can imagine some house luxuries will feel very welcome after a summer at camp. Summer at camp must be really nice itself, too.

Jaspercat--alcohol is metabolized to acetaldehyde, which binds to DNA causing DNA damage and interferes with DNA repair, and increases circulating estrogen, which increases breast cancer risk. Other sources of acetaldehyde are fermented food and beverages (yogurt, kefir, soy sauce, fermented dairy or soy products), pickles, fermented veggies, bananas, apples, pears, citrus fruits, strawberries. Acetaldehyde is used as a food additive in flavor extracts and essences, processed meat and baked goods, pizza crusts, certain processed sauces and condiments. Alcohol has the highest acetaldehyde exposure due to the combination of acetaldehyde present in the drink and the acetaldehyde produced during metabolism. I found a couple of studies that measured the acetaldehyde in various foods and drinks for comparison. FYI--1 Liter of alcohol weighs right around 1 kg.

    Orange flavor: 1416 mg/kg
    Coffee, roasted (powder) 40.14 mg/kg
    Instant coffee (powder) 35.51mg/kg
Lemon flavor for baking 26.32 mg/kg
    Calvados (apple brandy) 26.4 mg/L
    Red wine 10 to 125 mg/L
    Sherry/Sparkling wine 10 to 125 mg/L
    Rum 10 to 125 mg/L
    Banana 18.27 mg/kg
    Yoghurt (low fat) 17.42 mg/kg
    Orange soft drink 16.30 mg/kg
    Whiskey 6.2 mg/L
    Beer 4 to 15 mg/L
    Dessert /fruit wines 1.71 mg/L

    Comparative_analysis_of_acetaldehyde_levels_in_different_alcoholic_beverages.pdf

(PDF) Quantitative Determination of Acetaldehyde in Foods Using Automated Digestion with Simulated Gastric Fluid Followed by Headspace Gas Chromatography

I drink pretty close to a Liter of coffee on an average day, containing about 40mg acetaldehyde.
I also drink a glass or two of rose or sparkling wine a day, say about 0.25 Liters. That contains about 31 mg acetaldehyde, using the high end. Looks like I should be more worried about my coffee intake than my alcohol intake! For myself, both my morning coffee every morning and a drink in the evening when I want one, which isn't every day, are important to my quality of life. I'd rather risk a possible recurrence of breast cancer sometime on the next 5 years than live 20 years depriving myself of something I enjoy.

Apologies--looks like I got up on the soapbox again!

    Jazzy--Yummy looking quiches!

mOmmy--so glad you found the watch, even if it wasn't in time for the wedding. It is so aggravating the way things can run away and hide like that.

Miriandra--What you say about things we can't control vs the things we can is so true. I sincerely hope I never have to find out what the sound of a hip dislocating sounds like!

    Good Morning, Loungettes!

Teka--yes, I do and we just had our monthly get together last evening! A brand new little Italian Bistro/Catering place that opened a month or two ago. It was beautiful and very friendly with great food. I had a Hugo Spritz. It had Elderberry Liquor, sparkling water, lime, and something I can't remember and it was GOOD!

    mOmmy--ooh, hiss, boo! Too funny!

Why do dog make terrible dancers?

    Aha! I found the recipe!

    Ingredients

    Serves:

11.5 oz Ketel One Botanical Cucumber & Mint

    0.3 oz Elderflower liqueur

    0.5 oz Cucumber juice

    0.5 oz Lime juice

    0.3 oz Simple syrup

    1.5 oz of soda water

    1.5 oz of proseco

    Mint Sprig for Garnish

I think the one I had last night was made with plain Vodka, it was clear and not green like this one.

NM - I liked your 'soapbox' and I totally agree with your conclusions. I'll take the risks of recurrent cancer in order to do/have some of the things that make my life enjoyable.

My goodness, that Long Island Iced Coffee has enough booze for several people. I think I'd rather try it hot though.

How's Mom adjusting to the new room? Are there new caregivers also or the same people?
