Stopping kisqali during radiation?
Hi
Recent mastectomy, 13cm lobular plus 3mm tumor in node. Just starting kisqali while I heal up and plan for radiation which should start in about 4 or 6 weeks. My radiation onc said she normally asks people to stop kisqali while receiving radiation. I told my med onc and it didn't seem like they'd heard this before.
Anyone been told the same? If so, how did that go for you? I'm pretty nervous about the kisqali but I also have read it's an effective drug. Oh and waiting on insurance approval for a PET scan...

Hi @tacocat, Having adjuvant radiation while taking Kisqali increases the chance of developing neutropenia and cardiac QTc interval prolongation. It seems to be OK to have palliative radiation while on Kisqali since the rads dosage is lower and more targeted. There are other meds that can increase the chance of developing adverse effects from radiation. While it is fine to take AIs when undergoing rads taking tamoxifen concurrently increases the risk of pneumonitis and fibrosis.
While ROs and MOs work together and are familiar with each other’s fields they practice two different medical specialties. When it comes to radiation your RO is going to be more knowledgeable and aware of current research. If your MO feels that a break for rads is not advisable have them consult with your RO. I hope radiation goes well and your insurance approval comes through soon.
