Irish Superstitions for the Christmas Season
by Bridget Haggerty
Irish superstition said it was lucky to receive a Christmas card which pictured the Three Wise Men.
In the old days, children were usually charged with the responsibility of gathering the Yule-tide decorations and finding a holly bush loaded with berries was considered very lucky. Holly is a symbol commonly associated with Christmas and has been used in Yule-tide celebrations for almost two thousand years.
To the Druids, it was holly's evergreen nature that made it special. They believed that it remained green to help keep the earth beautiful when the other trees shed their leaves. It was also their custom to wear it in their hair when they ventured into the forests to watch the priests collecting mistletoe. Holly was also once used for protection, and in ancient times, people would decorate doors and windows with it, in hopes that it would capture, or at least dissuade, any evil spirits before they could enter the house.
In the Celtic language, Mistletoe means "All Heal." It was believed to have all sorts of miraculous qualities including the power of healing diseases, banning evil spirits, bringing good luck and bestowing great blessings. In fact, even enemies who happened to meet beneath a Mistletoe in the forest would lay down their arms, exchange a friendly greeting, and keep a truce until the following day. From this old custom grew the practice of suspending Mistletoe over a doorway or in a room as a token of good will and peace to all.
It was once believed that on Christmas Eve, an angel stands on every spike of the holly leaves. It was also said that the Good People would come in out of the cold to find shelter in the holly branches and that the mischief of the evil spirits was suspended for this Holy Night.
In the old days, people believed that animals celebrated the arrival of Christ and that the cows in the cattle-sheds and the deer in the forests went down on their knees at midnight. Others believed that animals were able to speak like humans on Christmas Eve - but it was bad luck to try and listen in!
The placing of a lighted candle in the window of a house on Christmas Eve is still practised today. Primarily it was, and still is, a symbol of welcome to Mary and Joseph as they travelled looking for shelter.
After evening meal, the kitchen table was again set and on it were placed a loaf of bread filled with caraway seeds and raisins, a pitcher of milk and a large lit candle. The door to the house was left unlatched so that Mary and Joseph, or any wandering traveller, could come in. It's also said that leaving a loaf of bread on the table will ensure bread for the coming year. And, you should also leave a bowl of water out to be blessed by the travellers - this water would be used for cures.
It was believed that the rooster would crow at unusual times, and to hear him crow at midnight was a good omen, as was a new moon. A clear star-filled sky would bring good crops in the summer, and shoes placed side by side would prevent a quarrel. For good health throughout the following year, you should eat an apple at the stroke of midnight.
There were also sinister superstitions associated with the eve of Christ's birth. If, when all were seated round the fire, one shadow on the wall behind them was headless, then the person who cast the shadow would be dead before the end of the year. Someone would also die if a hoop fell off a cask. If the principal candle goes out for some reason during the Christmas season, it is a bad omen - possibly the death of the head of the household.
It was commonly held in Ireland that the gates of Heaven open at midnight and those who die would go straight in. It was also believed that no prayer would go unanswered on this most holy of nights.
As for Christmas Day itself, according to an old verse,
"If Christmas Day on a Sunday fall
A troublesome Winter we shall have all."
It's said to be lucky to eat breakfast by candlelight on Christmas morning. You should eat plum pudding on Christmas to avoid losing a friend before next Christmas.
Refuse a mince pie at Christmas dinner and you will have bad luck for the coming day.
Drink three sips of salted water before Christmas dinner for good health - But on the second day after Christmas, abstain from meat to prevent fever.
Snow on Christmas means Easter will be green. A blowing wind on Christmas Day brings good luck - but, wearing new shoes will bring bad luck. And never turn a mattress - very bad luck for the turner! The child born on Christmas Day will have a special fortune and good luck will come to the home where a fire is kept burning throughout the Christmas season. To bring luck and blessings, you should take a wisp of straw from the nativity scene at the church and bring it home.
The weather on each of the twelve days of Christmas signifies what the weather will be on the appropriate month of the coming year. And, all decorations are traditionally taken down on Little Christmas or Twelfth Night - the feast of the Epiphany on January 6th. It is considered to be bad luck to take them down before then. Also, you shouldn't fix a leak in the roof during the twelve days - the leak will come back if you do!
The Gaelic greeting for 'Merry Christmas' is:
'Nollaig Shona Duit'
......which is pronounced as 'null-ig hun-a dit'.0 -

Oh dear Cami, why do you feel you look horrible??? I know you are a BEAUTIFUL person inside, and I am betting that shines through on the outside too! I am funcused as to what you are trying to cover up with your eye makeup? Did I miss sumtin? Your friend loves you for who YOU are, and does not care what you look like, and you know I am right about that!!! Try to just have a good time with her, ok? AND I am glad you are venting to us, it really does help. I hope you won't be sad once you get a good hug from your friend. Wish I could hug you too, but at least I can give you a BIG cyber hug... (((((CAMI)))))
Have fun, ok?

((((((((((cami)))))))),enjoy your visit with your friend,if she's flew all that way to see you,she loves you for who you are and not what you think you look like. dorty-hope your appointment went well. any chance your allergic to the covering on the implants and thats why your having so many problems? also about a dietary/nutrition consult to make sure your eating the best diet possible for healing and a good immune system, you could say the jd is grains, because my dietician keeps telling me to have a lot of grains
also how about accupuncture to get that immune system going?0 -
Juliet Thanks,
Oh Julie ---Listen to her Dork she knows these rhings. --I always for about immun systems for some reson, sometimes I remember--but don't they take blood tests forst to make sure all u'r levels are stron. Is that the immune system IDK nothin.
0 -
Cami, me too...I have the worse dark undereye area....I keep trying to find a concealer/illuminator that will work! I can identify with that, but with me I think it is allergies too that makes it so bad, which is year round. Enjoy your friends visit!!!
Julie, Good idea for Dotty to look at nutritional issues too. FUNNY about the "grain" in likker. Does acupuncture really help with the immune system? I want to find one here, as I did enjoy it when I had it done on the ship a couple of times...except the one time they inserted then needles wrong and it HURT. But was ok when re-adjusted. Wonder if it helps with degenerative discs (disks?)?
KatwinkaGladThatDottyWillBeA-ok!

Good evening, Loungettes! Got home at a decent hour today, Hooray! Got lots done, though.
Mema--don't worry, I'm way to old to get off on driving through all kinds of cruddy weather just because it's there. I have very definite limits! I do NOT leave home until my road is plowed. End of story. Ben in the ditch on the side of my road way too many times, been there-done that, it's gotten old.
DorKable--of course you have shed a few tears. What you are going through is worth crying over. It's not spilt milk, after all. You know, I cry with my contacts in all the time and don't have any problems. In fact, a good cry can clear off my contact and water them if they have gotten dry! Good for you for talking with a lawyer. I won't ask any more questions about the sitsiashun. Good list of the positive side of the sitsiashun!
Goldie--LOVE the sentiment for the PS!
BBBBernie--I really enjoyed the superstitions and traditions of Christmas! What fun to read, and so interesting! Thanks for sharing.
Cammy--hope the shower was enjoyable and the company was pleasant!
Wahine--I'm glad I could be of some help to DorKy. And the bad driving was only for a few hours yesterday ayem. After it started raining things cleared off pretty quickly. Happy Birthday to your DH!
ORLA--no, black ice is NOT fun, but I pretty much know where it is likely to happen on the way in to the office. I also know that waiting just a bit longer to leave the house means I avoid it for the most part. Been living here a while now, pretty much know the routine and when things are not routine!
Cammy--you have every right to complain! The D problem isn't a small issue, it can be a VERY big one. Feeling weak and dizzy isn't fun after the first few hours or so. And it makes your brain fuzzy, too.
CynCyn--that was quite a partay, wasn't it? I've never tried Willie but always wanted to. Maybe some day I'll get brave enough to try to find some. I wonder what it will do to my asthma, though. . .
Juliet--thinking about you, hoping you're feeling better!

highlo goils!
I wanted to check in quickly and let you all know that I am feeling just great. I have pain but it is nothing that a dose of percocet will not stop. Anyway, my visit to the PS was great, I jest love the staff. It is only a three man show, the doctor, the nurse and the receptionist. I hate to be cruel but de receptionist was perhaps the ugliest lady I have ever met. She reminded me of the NJ suntan mom, have you all seen that crazy lady? And she was using a typewriter. If I had a dwink, I would have spit it out. Anyway, I came out of there with the warm fuzzzie feeling that I get with my PCP. and omg, the Dr said that if I have issues after hours, that his office phone rings to his cell phone and he will pick it up. Hell, in the past, the PS's have called back when I left message with answering service but never did chit for me. TOld me if it could not wait, go to the ER. this new guy seems like the type who would come into the office on a weekend if needed. I loved his office too. And it is so close to my house, it took me less than ten minutes to git dere. Whilst sitting in de chair, the view was a lovely wooded hilly area and was nearly breath taking. The area is prior homes that were converted to office space as they are just a few blocks from de highway. Oh, de goil on de phone told me to park next store at Dr. Levin's office as there was road work being done. Well I pull up and the guys are working right in front of the other doctors driveway. So I rolled down the window to ask if it was okay to go through. I could not hear what the man was saying due to the noise. and OMG, he was saying MOVE MOVE MOVE as the concrete truck was ready to back into me. I had not realized it was moving cuz I was looking at the guy talking to me. So yep, was nearly backed into again, dis time by a big arse truck. Only me.
I has to make a likker store run but if mese don't make it back to de lounge, and I purdy sure I will, even if i have to talk to meseself, I have a few words to all of you. But I gotta start with Camille....
Cammie, why on earth would you think that your issue with energy, brain fog and the ugly dreaded D is not enough to complaiin about? Hell, I think you have it worst off than all of us. you NEED to vent and let it out. And de other goils made a very strong point in saying that your friend is coming to see YOU and does not care what you look like. You are beautiful and I do not need to see you to say that. Cuz I just knew it. I would love you even if you looked like the NJ suntan mom at 85 years old and at 500 lbs, we all would. Dis ain't no Miss America Pageant although our Allison is our HTL Beauty Queen. I declaired dat jest todey.

I just found dis person at de door, she is here to deliber a cake. and funny ting, she remind me of de reception at my fired todey PS. And I tail you, she is beautiful to me cuz she is a sweetie. oh, me digressed, way saying dat de lady wuz at de back door and look what she got, yum yum yum!
Katwinka de coconut cake maka, dis lady showed up at de lounge and asked for you. She was just so sweet. Not de purdiest lady but she so sweet she beautiful to me (really she reminds me of the lady that works my my "fired todey" PS, Lena. And Lena reminds me of Mimi from de Drew Carey show. oops mese digressed, was saying, de lady below was looking for ye, yep looking for wahine de baking machine. she had a song and wanted your DH to hear it. sorry you missed her but I sent her to yer house.

tail yer DH happy birthday from all de goils of de HTL. I know he already gottza lotta htl smootches but thought he would like anudder cake too. enjoy yer two deys of bday sailabrations!
NM, you are jest so dern humble about things. I jest lub ye berry muchly. I tank ye berry berry muchliest for all yer help, you are a shining star dat mese sees in de sky. I hasn't yet talked to attorney, still pondering based on de question to my PS about where de implant should be. I have a tough time doing this as I did like the man. I gonna do a widdle more research but I really do feel strongly that he wronged me in putting that implant at my skin surface and having it fail not once but twice.
well me must run to likker store, omg look at de clock. lata!
I try to talk to de rest of ye later, okey? I am all amped up from de percotini fountain and mese hope someone come in few a few twosdey dwinkies.
Tank you all for de love and support. I swear if not for de goils of de htl, I wood still be crying.

Awwww Dorkie, It is SO nice you are back in de lounge posting. I hope you made de likker run, I mean dats IMPORTANT!!! I showed my DH the fat beyotch wid da cake for him, and de udder bday wishes. He is touched, truly!

Now to give my parents some ideas on where to go to celebrate my dad's bday tamarra night....steak(thinking Texas Roadhouse or Outback), or italian(thinking Macaroni Grill), or Chinese(thinking PFChangs)....
