How are all the sickies--this thing that we have is horrible--it doesn't want to leave--t knocks the hell out of u and decides it's takng residence in u'r body---u'r head has the little drummer boy--not so little anymore----u'r throat has the guy in the circus who swallows fre and u'r nose is that constand drpping faucet that's broken.And they don't take naps Well that's what going on here anyway. and that's with antibotics. I hope everyone is doing better tho. My SL is sick too but at least he went to work, he's on another knd of antibotc and Lele has strep throat and Joey is fine--But he helps when he gets me a bottle of water he rolls it in to me.

It's really cold here but my GF gave me a faux fur wrap and it so so warm wth a hat it's warmer than my wnter coal and I love it. Oh maybe I told u all that already--u prolly forgot anyway--De lounge s still pretty and the tenders stll tenders sn 'm not 100% wll just et right ro it and start on the floor wth just one tnder tonite--that's all I can handle for now--cht I need another drnk I just spilled some going down----on the floor in the corner. Lori, when you mentioned Cami might be doing the table dance, it reminded me that our Dorkie DID do a table dance for my DH...lol...she snuck outside of the restaurant and was dancing on the table outside, right in view of DH, but I don't think he even noticed. LOL! She was SO much fun, I tell ya, I have never laffed so much. And I love the Male Nurse and all that he says to us....awesome. I didn't know you could do that with their cards, but you are the computer guru...there is so much I don't know. I broke my netbook right before our trip....I think because I always had it on the sofa next to my chair, and I would keep picking it up by the top corner (screen), so yuppers the opposite hinge broke. And before I realized that, it cracked thru the case. Still workable, but I guess I need to replace it soon, but AFTER I save all my pictures!
Still feel sick, but so far this ayem have not coughed...I don't wanna talk as I don't wanna cough. I like your description Cami~! My DH has it worse than me, so I will share what you wrote about how you feel, as I am sure he can identify with that. Maybe cuz I had the zicam for 4 days, then was *well* for 2 days, then got hit wid dis chit, might be why I am not as sick as my DH???? IDK.

good afternoon all, well my friend had a colonoscopy in which they found a mass, she had surgery in october, first meeting with the mo today, no stage given and she didn't ask they said frb found in peritoneum but to have chemo and radiation, oxalplatin and capecitabine, i can advise her on the rads but want to send a care package any suggestions from my breasties who have had chemo.

Well this is weird. My DH and I got sick around the same time, 3 days ago, very deep painful coughing, sore throat, aches, slight fevers. We both went to the same clinic today, but saw diff doctors, and got diff dx's! Go figure. My dr only listened to my chest and said I have an upper resp infec, like bronchial, so is putting me on antibiotics and said to keep taking cough meds. DH's dr tested him for strep and flu (flu came back positive) and checked his ears,mouth, etc. SO he is putting him on tamiflu and musinex. SO I went back to my dr and said "Shouldn't I be tested for the flu too, since my DH is positive for the flu?". He tells me the tamiflu doesn't work unless you take it within 48 hrs of symptoms. SO....guess we will "test" which dr is right....sooooo weird. Finally could get out today...yesterday you couldn't have dragged me outta bed for anything. The cough is still painful and very deep, but not so achy anymore, and just a slight fever.
I think Lori was going to post a pretty pic she did of me and Dorothy....that girl has the GIFT to make us all look beeautimous!
Cami, anxious to hear what your 2 drs say, tomorrow. Hope it is encouraging news! Also, our Dorkie goes to her dr tomorrow too. Just hope for good news for both of youse!

Hiya goils, happy thirstdey! oh boy,is mese thirstdey....tenders, rounds for eberyone! woo hoo, tank ye loyal tenders.
I can't believe how many people have this creep crude going around. People are coughing at work, I see people coughing in their cars, in the store, LorDy oh my, I do eberyting I ken to keep from gitting sick again. Unlike manny of you goils, I am pro flu shot. Dat is because de year I did not get it, I got de flu and it was horrible. It started on Christmas jest after dinner. I told mese people that I had to lay down, I am usually de dish washer since mese sisters do all de cooking. So mese lays on de couch and jest knew I was in for a wooper (no Mr. Big, I not talking about yer wooper but whoa baby)! I spend FIVE deys home in bed and ebery night, I tail myself that it be better tomorree. Tomorree come and no better. My temp was very close to 104. I could go on about dat but you all know how bad it ken be. My point, my PCP suggests a flu shot each year and I have not come down with the flu since. Dat a good ting because rumor in de bar is that Katwinka's DH has de flu. And mese was kissing on him and hugging on him jest two and point five deys ago. I feel jest fine and know I am not gonna git sick. Cuz I am too cool for dat. hehe, jest kidding, silly mese. Well enough about mese, you all tail ME what you tink of MESE hehe, dat an old joke.

Dork I love u'r posts--there the wind beneath my wings. did I say that rght. ?U see the Dr. too--what will he do for u--that will help immediately. I hope he makes u'r owey feel betterest.
Jule I'm sorry about u'r friend--this wll be difficult for her---I can say a few rhngs but that's how I reacted to chemo---I used all plastic utensils--it helped for metal mouth--- used Benatine (I think that's the name) for toothpaste and mouthwash--for dey mouth so u don't get sores--loads of water, and since it's winter and if she looses her hair a nite cap is so needed--even if it's not super cold cuz u get cold so easily and u'r feet get cold too. And of course u don't feel like gettng dressed everyday so a new par of pj's or nghtgown is a nice dea-for a while u wear them more than u wear clothes (well I did) Another thing I used was a body wash u just suds t up and towel dry it so u feel clean cuz there are times u can't take a shower--and when I did hace har (on different chemo) I had a shampoo wash it ets really nice and sudsy and u towel dry it too.--Straws are another useful thing. Off hand that's all I can think of for comfort--I'm sure I forgot stuff but that's a start. And I certainly will pray for her.
My sister called they are back she and all of her family had a wonderful tme-- told her how much I hated her but she didn't care cuz she had a ood tme. My brother called he's in Florida lready so he went ggolfing and told me it was 84 there today so I told hm I hate him too. He stays most of the winter, so does my other brother and I told him I hate him also. So now that I told them all I hate them they don't even care--what a family I have. t quiet here I'd better o to the lounge it's much more fun so 'll see u soon.

I have to do dis chit with it twice a dey and it hurts. And makes for titty farts which are not as funny as real farts. Well for me enny way. But what ken I do but roll with it and hope for de best.
WEll I must go. I snuck out of work to say hailo to all of you again. I am tired and have to call it quits soonly so that mese wake de hail up on time tomorrow, been having issues with too much required sleep for mese! Hi Julie - chemo care. Rest, rest with more rest and fluids with more fluids. If her taste buds do change, eat when and what she likes. Try and eat the right foods to keep the WBC up.
Take the drugs they give you especially the anti nausea.
Stay warm but do not go out in the sun. Chemo can thin the skin. Be extremely aware of cuts, scratches or burns. they will be very slow to heal and highly susceptible to infection.
If or when the hair loss starts (depends on the chemo) it can be painful, same with nails. Have comfy slippers 2 sizes too big if you start to lose the toe nails and soak feet in Epsom Salts.
Carry a care bag, spare drugs, thermometer, blanket etc.
Accept all the help you can get.

Julie another thng to think about body lotion--skin get icky dry for most tell her to keep t well moistured cuz all of a sudden it's like alligator skin and if it peels off that's fine it's good again.--Well it was for me.

She is lucky to have you for a friend. FURB. I didnt go on a cruise..I did have my girlfriend here for a week tho between Xmas and! NY and that was great!

Oh Julie, sorry to hear about your friend…..FURB. I did have chemo, but not that kind. Maybe if you can find out if she will lose her hair or not. If so, maybe some scarves or hats? Some chemo’s give you metal mouth, so mints or lemon drops, lotions. Definitely water, water water, and also protein. That’s all I can think of right now. Wishing her all the best. Oh, I never had troubles with my nails, but ALWAYS have polish on, so not sure if that was why or not. Took tons of supplements too.
Cyn, my mom could take something personal of yours, such as a ring, hold it and could do a reading on you. Good to see you girl! And I can relate to sitting in front of the computer for so dang long. And I wonder why I have a flat EWWA!

Good Morning, Loungettes! I know I've been MIA for a couple of days, the asthma thing caught up with me again. I did not end up in the ER again, I ended up getting a steroid shot in the doc's office, buying a nebulizer machine and now am "sucking the peace pipe" every 4 hours along with taking steroid pills and being on house arrest for the rest of the week. With strict orders to go to the ED if I feel any worse. Well, I 'm sitting here sucking the peace pipe, NOT coughing my toenails up, and feeling better, even if my hands are shaking so much from the nebulizer that I can't type straight. Now, on to getting caught up with the world outside of my recliner, nebulizer, xanax and audiobooks. . .
Hmm, not sure where I left off, so I'll just go back a few pages and work my way up. If I repeat myself, feel free to delete me. NO,NO, delete my POST, please don't delete ME!!!! Boy gonna hafta look out for that kinda mis-speaking!

Cammy--your homemade soap getting so soapy reminds me of when my mom had her knees replaced. While she was in rehab she called me up at work one day, very irritated and snippy and told me to get her some "good" soap, the soap at the rehab was, get this, "too slippery". Click. I sat there wondering just what was going on, and then had to figure out what to do--get her soap with some grit in it, like gardener's soap but ended up getting her a soap on a rope.I guess it worked, she never said anything else about it. . .

Juliet--good point about getting smaller underwear when you lose weight! I'll have to file that one away for future reference.
Goldie--I looked at those salted carmel whatsis drinks and thought they were lamps at first! Gotta find the recipe for those, look so good!
Wahine--so glad you hafd a good time at the wedding, sounds like a real fancy event! I'm so glad that grooms father's car was the only thing that wasn't perfect for the event. Scary, but a messed up car can be towed off, ignored until the new couple is off on honeymoon land and then dealt with.

Another side note to all the Loungettes--
My asthma is primarily inflammatory and takes some pretty hefty doses of steriods to get the message across that it can calm down, and I get very, very anxious and very very wired and very very just plain weird for the first few days. So if I sound like I'm rocking right off my rocker and cracking up all my pots, it's ok, it's the meds, it'll sort itself out and I'm only posting in the hour or so just before I take the xanax and a nap. AND--I have a lovely friend from my old church who has moved back into her place across the road from me who calls me every 4 hours and reminds me to take my nebulizer and pills, and who has been known to break a window in order to get into my house if I should be here and don't answer the phone. (I forgot to tell her I had a doctor's appointment. That was a couple years ago and she still reminds me about it! And then I remind her that the garage door was open at the time, and we have a good laugh again.).
So just sit back and enjoy my drug induced insanity, or just ignore the silly lady in the corner giggling into her coffee cup.

Oh, Chrissy, I am so sad to hear you are sitting vigil. My prayers are with you, your sib and your Mom. I wish I could be there with you all, not that I can change anything but just so you know you aren't alone and have someone to cry with, talk to, yell at or do whatever you need to do. This is so hard a dituation.

LECTURE ALERT: INFLUENZA 101 BY NATIVEMAINER (WHILE ON ON GOOD DRUGS)
What most of us here in the lounge have is most likely a cold. The "common cold" is caused by a virus in the rhinovirus family. (Rhino as in rhinoplasty, as in nose job.) Medically called "upper respiratory infection" because it affects the mucus membranes in the nose, throat, sinuses and larynx (where the vocal cords are). The body usually gets rid of the virus in the time it takes an antiviral medication to get into your system enough to do any good so all you would get is a lot of side effects of the medication after the cold is over. Antibiotics do not affect viruses at all. Colds sometimes allow a bacterial infection to get hold in the sinuses or lungs, causing what medical types call a secondary sinusitis or pneumonia, and these are treated with antibiotics. When the immune system gets overwhelmed enough that a secondary infection develops a little chemical help is a good idea. The flu is caused by a virus as well, from the influenza family. The influenza virus family has branches, imaginatively named influenza A and influenza B. Remember the H1N1 strain from a couple years ago? It's full name is Influenza A H1N1. The letters/numbers after the A or B are like fingerprints, identifying a particular strain. Influenza is an infection of the mucus membranes of the lower respiratory system (below the vocal cords), in the lungs and tubes in the lungs.
So, how does a Loungette know if she has a cold (URI, upper respiratory infection) which is annoying, or the flu (lower respiratory infection) and need to pay real attention? Here's NativeMainer's Trio of Triage Questions to tell the difference:
- How did this come on?
- I felt like I was coming down with something for a while and now I know I have something.
- I was fine and then a load of bricks dropped on top of me and I feel like chit.
- What is your temperature?
- My temp is 99.something or lower OR 37.7 for the non-US loungettes.
- My temp has 3 number before the dot OR over 38 for the non-US Loungettes.
- On a scale of zero to 10 how much do all your muscles ache?
- Huh? I've got a headache, my muscles are no real problem.
- About a million.
If you got 3 "a" answers, you've got a cold. Drink fluids, take tylenol, aspirin or whatever you like, and play for all the attention you can get. If you got all "b" answers, call your Primary provider and get seen ASAP. Antiviral medication can help but has to be started within 48 hours of symptoms starting. If you got a mix of "a" and "b" answers, call your primary provider and discuss how you feel.
So, now, class, here's a pop quiz--Did anyone notice any mention of nausea and vomiting? Nope, 'cause that's not a usual part of either the cold or the flu. The "stomach flu" is usually food poisoning. There is no such thing in the medical world as stomach flu. OK, pet peeve addressed.
In summary, class, the cold comes on gradually, usually involves a sore throat, cough, runny nose, feeling tired, headache, and can occur any time of year but most often in the fall around the time school starts and often has a second peak around the 4th of July when people are having family reunions, get-togethers, and summer vacations. Influenza comes on fast. Many people can actually tell you what time it started, as in yesterday about 10:30 am. All at once the suffer feels achey all over, has chills, starts coughing, is so tired they can barely move and has a temp of over 101 (38.3). This usually happens during the winter with larger numbers of people affected so it makes the news, but it is actually happening to one degree or another all year round.
For otherwise healthy people neither the flu nor the cold is a particularly serious illness. Unfortunately, there are people who have less than robust immune systems that can get overwhelmed by one or the other and then run into other problems. Like me, who has asthma, who can get thrown into an asthma attack by a cold. People with chronic lung disease (COPD) can get very sick very quickly from either virus.
OK, now I've written a whole book and only intended to write a paragraph. What is with me today???? Oh, yeah, steroids. Sigh.

Wahine-I'm not sure what is in Strepsils, but zicam has a hefty dose of tylenol in it, so read directions carefully and make sure you don't take more than 4,000mg (4 grams) of tylenol in a 24 hour period. Xanax will help someone rest. It's in the same class as ativan and valium, and my best friend. I always keep some tucked away in my glove compartment for emergencies (and when I'm on steriods). A chest cold is actually bronchitis in medical terms, a lower respiratory infection, that is often bacterial rather than viral and antibiotic may be helpful. Speaking of catching things cyberly, one of the places that we touch the most and clean the least is the computer keyboard. A good wipe down with a disinfectant from time to time would be helpful. And yes, you can get the flu if you've had the flu shot.
Chrissy--I am so sorry for your loss. I am glad your Mom was peaceful. I am crying for you and your family.

NM, Hate that you got hit double barrels again, but glad you got on steroids, and all the meds. My dr gave me a steroid shot yest too, and the nurse said it would make me feel better (which it did) AND keep me awake (which it did, unfortunately!). So that and the cough capsules and the antib's are helping me a lot. My DH left the tamiflu script at the pharmacy in case we need it in the future, and so he just got on antib's and cough syrup, but had a really bad night. I think he is doing much better today. Is your "pece pipe" da willy, or for the nebulizer thingie? Sure hope you improve QUICKLIEST!!!! I love your definition of what symptoms you have and what it would be, but it was numbered, and you mentioned "a"'s or "b"'s, so I am still funcused! LOL....I really think you did that to see how many of us were paying attenshun!

My parents were so sweet to be so concerned for us. My mom kept calling and leaving messages and would worry when we couldn't answer (either asleep or at clinic), but they wanted to pick up the meds for us. I couldn't let them as I would have felt awful it they had a wreck or something. I mean how can you ask your 96 & 92 yo parents to run errands for you???
Dorothy, How are your parents? I am thinking so much of them, and hoping for some good solutions that will benefit them both. Let us know how your dr appt goes, too, ok?

Good advice from everyone Julie, for your friend. And Bernie, I didn't know it HURT when your hair came out.....ouch. Really had no idea. When I was helping my friends mom, yrs ago (my friend lived in another state), one thing she asked me for was a "baby brush" so when I brushed her hair, it didn't all come out at once. But then again, this was over 20 yrs ago, and at that time you didn't want to lose your hair all at once. I think it is more accepted now. It broke my heart to have all her hair come out in my hand every day. I told my friend she needed to come back asap, and they did MOVE back here, but by then, her mom just had a wk to live. Always so sad, no matter the age.
Hope everyone is doing okay. I feel much better, still not sure if we will go to Tunica or not, tomorrow. I had thought it was today, so at least have another day to think about it.
