Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Saturday! Mom and I went to a local Lavender Farm earlier this week. We each picked a bundle of lavender to take home, had lunch from a food truck (mac & cheese with pulled pork), and really enjoyed the trip. Last year we went, but we missed the blooming season, this year was even more fun with everything in full bloom. They also have an English Garden, a Butterfly Garden, a Fountain Garden, and a gift shop that includes vanilla-lavender gelato, which was, unfortunately, sold out, as was the Lavender Lemonade.

Carole--glad to hear the husbands are home from the hospital. I hope they continue to improve/recover.

Wren--I can just picture Tiki herding the sheep through the fence! I guess Shepherd Border Collies aren't water dogs like some other breeds are.

Carole--Congratulations on the 56th Wedding Anniversary! The cosmo sounds like the perfect celebration cocktail. I hope dinner is as good as the cosmo!

    Good Morning, Teka, Miriandra, Wally!

    The Anniversary cocktail looks delicious.

I greatly enjoyed my Cosmopolitan at Boulders restaurant. It was beautiful in a stemmed chilled glass and tasted wonderful. I always order it there and seldom order it anywhere else. I also had a glass of chardonnay.

    Happy Sunday!

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Twofer Tuesday! Mom is being taken out to lunch by some friends that are here on vacation today, she's already called me twice to make sure I remember she won't be home today! I'm thinking today will be a good day to clean out the Jeep and then take out the kayak for a paddle this afternoon.

Seems pretty quiet here in the lounge recently. Everyone must be busy with summer fun.

Carole--happy anniversary and glad you enjoyed the drinks!

Made a giant granny square lap blanket for my mom recently. Gave it to her last week when i got to see her for the first time in 4 years. She cried over it and my stepdad said it looked really nice for my first try and the only one who is going to use it is my mom

Your stepdad sounds like a real peach. Unless he followed his "Your mom is the only one who is going to use it" comment with "because I'll make sure every visitor knows that this is a special blanket reserved for her use alone", he needs to learn to keep his gob shut. I'm sure it was fantastic, and your mom is elated to have something so filled with love and care.

oh my stepdad enforces what he says. He was pretty tough on me when I was growing up. The only one he backed down to when it came to me was his mom.

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy TGIF Day! I played chauffer to Mom and one of her long time friends going out to lunch yesterday. We went to the Jordan Pond House in Acadia National Park , known for its Popovers, great service, and view of Jodan Pond. Of course, there was so much fog that the pond wasn't visible at all, but that's becoming the norm whenever Mom goes to Mt. Desert Island at all. It was great fun listening to the two of them gossiping and reminiscing. It was funny listening to Mom complaining about how all the trees have been allowed to grow up and closer to the sides of the roads and how it made it hard for her to figure out where she was while she was directing me on the route she wanted to take home. I had to stop in front of every sign, close enough for her to be able to read it, so she could figure out where she was and which direction she wanted me to turn! It was a fun, if very hot and muggy, outing.

mOmmy--good to see you, hope you've been distracted by fun summer things!

    Morning, Minus!

    Jazzy--balloon time again!

Miriandra--as much as I dislike having spiders in my house, I do appreciate having them around to take care of bugs like that!

mOmmy--how sweet is your stepdad to say that and insist only your mom gets to use the blanket! What color(s) is the blanket?

been trying to get our temporary space more lived in.

the colors i used were solids and variegated ones. I alternated the scheme to make it a nice contrast. Was trying to use up some excess yarn. Only did away with a couple of small balls.

Random alcohol related story… My large toe nails detached during chemo in 2013. I've had at least 3 different podiatrists try a any number of things for the last 10 years. They were finally growing back in April, but apparently I picked up an infection and a fungus growth - for which I got scripts in April. Now the right one is detaching again. The podiatrist said I have to use the fungal cream every night for a year. Or there is an oral med that I can take for 8-9 months - BUT no alcohol at all during the oral treatment. Nope - not going to go there & give up my afternoon gin & tonic or wine with dinner. Nor am I going to give it my bedtime "wee dram" of Tuaca several times a week. After all the other insults of cancer, I'm holding firm to this enjoyment.

Minus, my onco told my DH to use iodine (you can get it on amazon in an ointment). It took a few months, but DH put it on nightly and it worked. You can also try Vicks vapor rub nightly (my friend's husband had tried so many rx and when I suggested the Vicks, she was shocked how much better that worked than anything he was rx). Good luck.

    Good morning ladies:

Here we are in the dog days of summer! And of course my AC is done in the heat of it all but knew it was coming. Working to get some quotes to get it replaced but nothing happens fast with contractors anymore. Anyways, I manage to keep the house cooler during the day with shades down and ceiling fans going. My house is 21 years old and the AC unit came with the build and knew it was coming. I just pray I don't need to do the whole HVAC system (including furnance) but think that is still good.

We are now 10 weeks away from opening the new hospital. We are starting to load it with equipment, and I was in yesterday and things are looking really good. I haven't been able to take any time off this summer with the deadlines, but am taking a week off in early November after the vacation freeze is off and going out to visit my sister in southern CA. We have our eye on a great hot spring/spa which you know I am a fan of for a day. I am tracking with my retirement plans to leave this job in the first quarter of next year with being to Medicare age, vesting done, and getting a bit more debt paid off by year end (the new car).

Anyone watching the Season 3 of the Gilded Age on HBO? One of my favorite shows and great cast and the scenery and costuming is fabulous. Its sort of like Downton Abbey as a period piece series and if you like those and have HBO/HBO Max, check it out!

MinusTwo- I am sorry to hear about the toenails. Dang cancer treatment is the gift that keeps on giving. I never knew this was a thing that came with chemo. I agree about just not being willing to give up quality of life things that we enjoy. I know they don't like us to drink at all with BC and I do so rarely, but also not giving it up. Sounds like the ladies here have some other ideas for you…

Mommy- what a thoughtful gift you made for your mom and how much she loved it. Dang your stepdad is mean, but I have had relatives like that too (I didn't have a stepdad). He is just jealous you did something nice for her and it's not for him. Trying to let go of his toxic meanness and know your mom appreciates you.

NM- the balloons fly year-round here; it's a thing to take tourists up for rides and they come yearly. But sometimes they come over the patio or house or just to the east of the house for a fly by. But as we get closer to the fall and balloon fiesta, you will see more of them and more often too. Them flying over never gets old. I saw your lavendar farm pics on FB and did I hear someone say popovers?

    Happy Anniversary Carole!

I was down to a place I love for outdoor yoga today and went to see what was blooming in the gardens. Photo coming, the gardens were full of blooms.

    Wishing everyone a good weekend!

Apparently I missed hitting the "Post Comment" button yesterday!

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Saturday! The puppers and I had a totally couch potato (chaise potato?) day yesterday. I was tired and achy when I woke up, two cups of coffee didn't even touch the tired, so I decided to do nothing all day but read, cuddle with the puppers, watch TV, and nap. Then I went to bed early last night, and this morning I feel good. I'm beginning to think I've got arthritis in more than just my knees given the way my hips, back, and fingers have been feeling when the weather changes, much like how my knees feel. Oh well, given that joint and back arthritis is an occupational hazard for nurses, I'm probably lucky it's taken this long to really start rearing its ugly head. At least I know heat and tylenol will help, and the puppers love to cuddle up right against by hips and back and warm them up for me!

mOmmy--some of the best color combinations are created by using up yarn that's on hand! I bet it's beautiful. One thing about temporary spaces, they get more lived in the longer someone lives in them!

Minus--it seems like a lot of the people I know who have had chemo have toenail issues forever afterwards. Fungal infections, recurrent bacterial infections, yeast infections, nail detachments, slow healing of injuries, you name it. I hope your podiatrist is more successful helping you than my friends have had. I certainly don't blame you for not opting for the oral treatment, that sounds like 8 to 9 months of sheer torture! I love the way you describe this issue as a form of cancer torture!

Wally--iodine, Vicks, and Bag Balm are getting to be more helpful than prescription medications for lots of nail and skin issues, I've noticed.

Teka--sounds like you had a hard time with the chemo toe thing. Glad it's gotten better.

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Sunday Funday! Let's see if I can manage to get today's post actually posted today. I'm going to Mom's for the day, it's grocery order, run the dishwasher, clean the floors day. She's got a couple more things she wants done, too, if she can remember what they are!

Jazzy--Yikes, I hope the AC unit is all that needs replacing/fixing. It sounds like the project is winding down and the new hospital getting closer to opening. It's too bad you couldn't take any time off this summer because of it, though. Now that you mention it, I think I remember you saying the balloons fly year-round. Yes, I drove Mom and a friend of hers to the Jordan Pond House, a restaurant known for popovers and tea, for popovers and lunch. The lavender farm was a lot of fun. I've still got the bunch of lavender that I picked that is still blooming and smelling wonderful. The blooms are lovely!

my stepdad is not mean at all. Just very traditional when it comes to girls. Treats me as if i was his daughter by blood, not marriage.

My mom called the other day and I could hear my younger brother's girlfriend asking my brother to ask my mom if she could use the blanket i had made my mom and my dad barked "No" at her. He firmly told her i had made it for my mom's use only and that wasn't negotiable. The girlfriend then started bugging my brother to ask me to make one for her and he said "I don't think my sister would do it, she only does things like that for people she knows and she's never met you". I lost it!

NM, if you're not already familiar with it, my PT recommended Voltaren for my knees. She said that topical NSAIDs don't impact the kidneys or liver like oral meds do. If you get to the point where you're taking pain meds daily, it might be worth looking into.

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Monday Monkey day! I had a pretty good visit with Mom yesterday. I took advantage of her sitting down for a second cup of coffee after I got there to clean out her fridge while I was looking through it for the weekly grocery list. I discovered that she can really only find the items at the very front of the shelves, anything that get pushed back she doesn't seem to see. I threw out quite a bit of outdated and clearly gone-by stuff and put several multiples of things right behind the open one in the very front. That's what she used to do when I was growing up so I'm hoping that it will help her find the next item when one runs out. I'm pretty sure it will help until she gets looking for something and moves everything all around again! I think I need to start going through her fridge every week so fewer things will go bad because she doesn't remember they are in there and she doesn't see them right off when she opens the door.

mOmmy--I think your stepdad is being wonderful, and your son is, too! You are truly valued by these men!

Miriandra--I am familiar with Voltaren, and have been using it for some time. I know it works best when used regularly and I am not so good about using really regularly, but make a point of using it regularly after I've taken Tylenol, and try to use it regularly if I notice the knee acting up more than usual. It's funny, when I was working in the nursing home I was putting it on people all the time, and really didn't think it made much difference, but now that I think about it and have used it myself, it really does noticeably decrease the amount of Tylenol needed orally!

    Bee's Knees Cocktail

    Ingredients
    • 2 ounces gin
    • 3/4 ounce honey syrup
    • 1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice

    Steps to Make It
    1. Gather the ingredients.
    2. In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, pour the gin, honey syrup, and lemon juice.
    3. Shake well.
    4. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Serve and enjoy.

    Recipe Variations
    • Some modern versions of the Bee's kKnees replace the lemon juice with sour mix, a citrus-flavored simple syrup commonly used in bars. When making the switch, try a mix of 2 ounces of gin, 1 1/2 ounces of sour mix, and 1 ounce of honey. It works really well with fruit-forward and floral gins.
    • The Bee's Knees cocktail is wonderful with vodka if you prefer that over gin.
    • Give the sweetener a floral tone. Lavender honey syrup is a fantastic choice, or you can replace a portion of the honey syrup with an elderflower liqueur.
