    Life rushes us along and few people are strong enough to stop on their own. Most often, something unforeseen stops us and it is only then we have the time to take a seat at life's kitchen table. To know our own story and tell it. To listen to other people's stories. To remember that the real world is made up of just such stories. Until we stop ourselves or, more often, have been stopped, we hope to put certain of life's events "behind us" and get on with our living. After we stop we see that certain of life's issues will be with us for as long as we live. We will pass through them again and again, each time with a new story, each time with a greater understanding, until they become indistinguishable from our blessings and our wisdom. It's the way life teaches us how to live. -Rachel Naomi Remen

    If we pretend to be more enlightened than we really are, we will miss an opportunity to heal ourselves. Admitting our limitations can make us feel vulnerable, yet it is very freeing. We just have to be ourselves as we are now, accepting the mixture of enlightened awareness and human limitation that is in each of us. Through this self-acceptance, we find a deep peace and self-love.

    There are nine requisites for contented living:
    HEALTH enough to make work a pleasure;
    WEALTH enough to support your needs;
    STRENGTH enough to battle with difficulties and forsake them;
    GRACE enough to confess your sins and overcome them;
    PATIENCE enough to toil until some good is accomplished;
    CHARITY enough to see some good in your neighbor;
    LOVE enough to move you to be useful and helpful to others;
    FAITH enough to make real the things of God;
    HOPE enough to remove all anxious fears concerning the future.
    - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

    "What sunshine is to flowers, smiles are to humanity. These are but trifles, to be sure; but scattered along life's pathway, the good they do is inconceivable."

    And when we come to think of it, goodness is uneventful. It does not flash, it glows. It is deep, quiet, and very simple. It passes not with oratory, it is commonly foreign to riches, nor does it often sit in the places of the mighty: but may be felt in the touch of a friendly hand or the look of a kindly eye. -David Grayson

    Hi gigs, and welcome.

    This is a much quieter thread than it once was, but hopefully ( I'm four hours south of the area ) many of the ladies in the area who come to read the quotes I leave here may come on and help you in your search. This 'thread' has always been pretty much strictly Illinois ladies. So even if you go back to the beginning of the thread that is who you would find.

    I will say that for the most part, the majority of the women were/are from the general Chicago or closely surrounding areas. A few like me were well out of the area. Hopefully Sandy or someone will get on here and give you a hand.

    We are so often caught up in our destination that we forget to appreciate the journey, especially the goodness of the people we meet on the way. Appreciation is a wonderful feeling; don't overlook it. -unattributed

    Thanks Sandy. I'm okay. Lost a BIL yesterday morn in the wee hours. Not a total surprise with his history. Very serious accident ( compound neck fracture ) left him yrs. ago in need of heavy-duty pain killers for life. Sadly that as well as smoking and liquids ( coffee and soda daily all day ) exacted a price.

    My sinus condition -- awful with all the pollens, molds and so much rain but the meds are helping and at least don't drain my energy.

    Condolences about losing your BIL, Jackie. May his memory be for a blessing.

    NavyMom, I have a dear friend one town over (actually, about only half a mile) in Minooka. She too is a BC survivor (DCIS) but prefers to leave that chapter in her rear view mirror, so you won’t see her post here or go to support groups

    Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
    Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
    It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
    We ask ourselves,
    Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
    Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.
    Your playing small does not serve the world.
    There is nothing enlightened about shrinking
    so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
    We are all meant to shine, as children do.
    We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
    It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone.
    And as we let our own light shine,
    we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
    As we are liberated from our own fear,
    our presence automatically liberates others.
    - Marianne Williamson

    Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.

    Sometimes life frightens me and I'm tempted to retreat instead of risking failure. But when I challenge this fear and choose to take a risk, this stretches my soul. By forging ahead and trying something new—even when I am scared—I perform an act of courage. And this act of courage strengthens my soul and strengthens my character. -John Gray

    So many brilliant and gifted people squander their gifts because they lack the humility of self-understanding. When we think we know it all, we miss the point. When we think we know everything about ourselves, we show our ignorance and our arrogance. The wonder of human beings is that we are constructed in such a way that we can spend our entire lives exploring our inner universe and its connection to the universe as a whole and still barely scratch the surface.
    We are a wonder for us to behold. -Anne Wilson Schaef

    Every decision that you make either moves you toward your personality, or toward your soul. Each decision you make is an answer to the question, "How do you choose to learn love?", "How do you choose to learn authentic empowerment-- through doubt and fear, or through wisdom?"

    “Unhealthy” air quality today—166, thanks to ozone. Ugh. Of course, it’s nice, sunny & dry, and will be hot & stormy tomorrow, when my satellite dish repairman is coming and Monday, when the grill guy is coming to clean & refurbish my gas grill.

    If someone is able to show me that what I think or do is not right, I will happily change, for I seek the truth, by which no one was ever truly harmed. It is the person who continues in his self-deception and ignorance who is harmed.-Marcus Aurelius

    The surface of the ocean changes constantly. Now it is smooth and quiet. Again it becomes violent and tempestuous. But in its depths, down under the storms that whip the surface into a fury, there is a zone of eternal calm which no storm ever reaches, no hurricane ever ruffles. The surface of life is also in a state of constant flux, with good days and bad, victory and defeat. To maintain, as the ocean does, a deep inner calm, while the storms of misfortune, reverses, fears and worries lash at the surface of life, is to discover the secret of serenity. -Wilferd A. Peterson

    The healing of our present woundedness may lie in recognizing and reclaiming the capacity we have to heal each other, the enormous power in the simplest of human relationships: the strength of a touch, the blessing of forgiveness, the grace of someone else taking you just as you are and finding in you an unsuspected goodness. Everyone alive has suffered. It is the wisdom gained from our wounds and from our own experiences of suffering that make us able to heal. Becoming expert has turned out to be less important than remembering and trusting the wholeness in myself and everyone else. Expertise cures, but wounded people can best be healed by other wounded people. Only other wounded people can understand what is needed, for the healing of suffering is compassion, not expertise. -Rachel Naomi Remen

    There's only one form of security we can attain during our lives. It's inner security--the kind that comes from courage, experience, and the ability and the willingness to learn, to grow, to attempt the unknown. Security isn't what the wise person looks for; it's opportunity. And once we begin looking for that, we find it on every side. You can measure opportunity with the same yardstick that measures the risk involved. They go together. -Earl Nightingale

    The source of love is deep in us, and we can help others realize a lot of happiness. One word, one action, or one thought can reduce another person's suffering and bring him or her joy. One word can give comfort and confidence, destroy doubt, help someone avoid a mistake, reconcile a conflict, or open the door to liberation. One action can save a person's life or help them take advantage of a rare opportunity. One thought can do the same, because thoughts always lead to words and actions.If love is in our heart, every thought, word, and deed can bring about a miracle. Because understanding is the very foundation of love, words and actions that emerge from our love are always helpful. -Thich Nhat Hanh

    A miracle worker is an artist of the soul. There's no higher art than living a good life. An artist informs the world of what's available behind the masks we all wear. That's what we're all here to do. The reason so many of us are obsessed with becoming stars is because we're not yet starring in our own lives. The cosmic spotlight isn't pointed at you; it radiates from within you.
