The highest and best thing that people can conceive is a human life nobly and beautifully lived—therefore their loyalties and energies should be devoted to the arrangement of conditions which make this possible. The sole issue is how to make this world a place conducive to the living of a noble human life, and then to help people in every possible way to live such lives.

Sorrry I am late here. A lot of odd glitches the past couple of days. Had some nerd help and BC. Org techs worked on things as well. Hoping we are all on and no more issues.

In no way can we soeffectively hasten the dawning of the inner consciousness of another, as by showing forth the divinity within ourselves simply by the way we live. By example and not by precept. By living not by preaching. By doing not professing. -RalphWaldo Trine

Self-respect cannot be hunted. It cannot be purchased. It is never for sale. It cannot be fabricated out of public relations.

It comes to us when we are alone, in quiet moments, in quiet places, when we suddenly realize that, knowing the good, we have done it; knowing the beautiful, we have served it; knowing the truth, we have spoken it.

Courage begins when we can admit that there is no life without some pain, some frustration; that there is no tragic accident to which we are immune; and that beyond the normal exercise of prudence we can do nothing about it. But courage goes on to see that the triumph of life is not in pains avoided, but in joys lived completely in the moment of their happening. Courage lies in never taking so much as a good meal or a day of health and fair weather for granted. It lies in learning to be aware of our moments of happiness as sharply as our moments of pain. We need not be afraid to weep when we have cause to weep, so long as we can really rejoice at every cause for rejoicing.

Life is a refining process. Our response to it determines whether we'll be ground down or polished up. On a piano, one person sits down and plays sonatas, while another merely bangs away at "Chopsticks." The piano is not responsible. It's how you touch the keys that makes the difference. It's how you play what life gives you that determines your joy and shine. -Barbara Johnson

You cannot fail at being yourself. A cat doesn't try to be a tiger, and you shouldn't try to be something you aren't. You are a process, not a product. Your job is to discover what you are and create that creature. You still won't be perfect, but success isn't about perfection--it is about authenticity. You are a success if you are being your real, authentic self. -Bernie Siegel

Life begins for anyone when that individual refuses to be a victim of any delimiting experience: disease, accident, poverty, family pressure, marriage dilemma, neglect. Whatever the curse, if you will not take it, or accept the role fate seems to offer, you can never become a mental cripple and nothing can hold you back.

When I see someone smile, I know immediately that he or she is dwelling in awareness. This half-smile, how many artists have labored to bring it to the lips of countless statues and paintings? I am sure the same smile must have been on the faces of the sculptors and painters as they worked. Can you imagine an angry painter giving birth to such a smile? Mona Lisa's smile is light, just a hint of a smile. Yet even a smile like that is enough to relax all the muscles in our face, to banish all worries and fatigue. A tiny bud of a smile on our lips nourishes awareness and calms us miraculously. It returns us to the peace we thought we had lost. -Thich Nhat Hanh

There is no true and constant gentleness without humility; while we are so fond of ourselves, we are easily offended with others. Let us be persuaded that nothing is due to us, and then nothing will disturb us. Let us often think of our own infirmities, and we shall become indulgent towards those of others.

Balance is the key to my serenity. I attain balance by listening to my inner wisdom and to the wisdom of others. There is no situation in which I cannot find a point of balance. There is no circumstance in which I cannot find inner harmony. As I ask to be led into equilibrium and clarity, I will find that my answers come to me. I am wiser than I know, more capable of right action and attitudes than I yet believe. In every event, I seek the balance point of God's action through me. -Julia Cameron

There is nothing to compare with the courage of ordinary people whose names are unknown and whose sacrifices pass unnoticed. The courage that dares without recognition, without the protection of media attention, is a courage that humbles and inspires and reaffirms our faith in humanity. Aung San Suu Kyi

Our beliefs are so powerful that they color our entire world. We literally see what we believe, but we can--and most of us do--fail to take responsibility for what we see, especially what we see within. -Hugh Prather

The biggest addiction, and one we least often talk about, is being addicted to beliefs. We really get hooked into thinking what we believe is true and right. -Martha Boesing

The American city should be a collection of communities where every member has a right to belong. It should be a place where every person feels safe on his or her streets and in the house of his or her friends. It should be a place where each individual's dignity and self-respect is strengthened by the respect and affection of his or her neighbors. It should be a place where each of us can find the satisfaction and warmth which comes from being a member of the community of human beings. This is what people sought at the dawn of civilization. It is what we seek today.

The moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help that would never otherwise have occurred. A stream of events issues from the decision, raising unforeseen incidents and meeting and material assistance, which no person could have dreamt would have come his or her way.

Silence must be comprehended as not solely the absence of sound. It is the natural environment for serenity and contemplation. Life without silence is life without privacy. The difference between sanity and madness is the quality of our thoughts. Silence is on the side of sanity.

No person can reveal to you aught but that which already lies half asleep in the dawning of your knowledge. The teachers who walk in the shadow of the temple, among their followers, give not of their wisdom but rather of their faith and their lovingness. If they are indeed wise they do not bid you enter the house of their wisdom, but rather lead you to the threshold of your own mind. -Khalil Gibran

We can develop gratitude for all conditions, good or bad. Each has its necessary place in our development as healthy, happy people. We need the sorrows along with the joys if we are to gain new insights. Our failures keep us humble; they remind us of our need for the care and guidance of others. And for every hope dashed, we can remember, one will be realized. -unattributed

There is a Native American saying: "Don't judge another person until you have walked a mile in their moccasins." It is a freeing experience to suspend your judgments, let go of demands, and imagine yourself in the shoes of another. It expands our understanding, leads to compassion, and helps us to become closer to one another. -Charlotte Davis Kasl

Coolest day of August yet--at our high of 75F, bone-dry, gentle breeze. May sit out on the deck later with a cappuccino. My cherry tomato plants seem to be making a resurgence (of sorts). Got 3 beefsteaks ripening--one on the stalk, 2 on the sill; and my Green Zebras are edible now. (Would that fried green tomatoes were on my low-carb Mediterranean diet).

Sad to hear that Navy Pier will be closing for the season after Labor Day, reopening (hopefully, if the pandemic eases or there's a vaccine) around Easter. Tourism has taken a major hit all over the country, and Chicago is no exception--even the "dinner boats" are serving only outdoors, and have further suffered ever since the city cancelled the Wed. & Sat. night fireworks. Wish I could take one more ride on the Centennial ferris wheel, but when the Pier reopened in June, it stayed closed (though the neon is still lit at night).

I really think that the increase in violent crime (not including the recent looting) along the Mag Mile, River North, and Gold Coast/Streeterville is due to the absence of tourists--gangs feel emboldened to rent vacated hotel rooms for crowded parties, and expanding their deadly internecine feuds to members shopping at the upscale stores. Maybe one good thing that'll come of it will be that rappers will stop violently taunting each other with their lyrics (a major driver of retaliatory shootings) and revert to rapping about social justice issues--which, with NYC's Grandmaster Flash and the Sugar Hill Gang, was how rap began in the late '70s-early '80s. Even the shallow, hedonistic and sexist braggadocio "old-school" lyrics that came a bit later (e.g., about bling, cars, booze, boasting about their star status) seem quaint these days. "Gangsta" needs to be dead and buried. (I can't stand the "trap" and "drill" styles--which sound like woodpeckers on steroids, and ratchet noisemakers--but if they stop rapping about killing each other I can put up with it. At least I don't have to listen to it leaking out of CTA passengers' headsets, since I'm not setting foot on a bus or train anytime in the foreseeable future).

Contemplating how we came to be here is like trying to find the ends of space. We find no answers, only wonder and awe and gratitude for being invited. Counting our blessings leads to a desire to give something back. Thus begins the path of service, the fruit of our journey, the gateway to joy. -Dan Millman

The three hardest tasks in the world are neither physical feats nor intellectual achievements, but moral acts: to return love for hate, to include the excluded, and to say, "I was wrong."

    Hello Illinois Ladies,

Hopefully someone on this thread has had DIEP surgery in the Chicago area. I do currently have implants after bilateral mastectomy. However after several, several complications, infections & capsular contractures, my PS has recommended I have the implants removed and get the DIEP. I have tried finding an excellent micro surgeon and without knowing someone who has been there and done it, it’s hard to decide where to go.

    Thanks in advance Ladies
